So here's what most BAs get wronged about senior roles.

Myth one, you need five years of experience.

Some BAs move up in two to three years by demonstrating leadership so no you don't need five years of experience.

Myth two is that your company will promote you automatically.

Nah, you have to position yourself for a senior role.

Myth three is certifications alone will get you promoted.

Nah, experience and strategic thinking matter more than certifications, right?

One of my mentees went from junior to senior BA in just three years, not by waiting but by actively building their senior level skills.

So the steps to this is to start thinking like a senior business analyst, step one, right?

To be seen as a senior business analyst, you need to think like one before you even have the title, right?

Junior BAs focus on gathering and documenting requirements, asking stakeholders what they want,

and following instructions from managers.

On the other hand, senior BAs focus on strategic problem solving and business impact,

challenging stakeholders and influencing decisions, leading workshops and mentoring junior team members, right?

So this is one way you can then start to prepare yourself to becoming a senior business analyst.

One BA that I coached started running stakeholder workshops.

Her manager noticed and she got promoted within six months she started to show

that confidence right step two is to take ownership of high

impact projects one of the fastest ways to get promoted own high impact project

if you only do basic tasks you won't stand out right

well how do you then begin to find these high impact

projects try to volunteer for projects linked to business growth or cost savings okay

work on automation or digital transformation initiatives or even AI.

Try to identify process inefficiencies and propose solutions for those in your area of work.

Another example is a BA that I mentored.

They found inefficiency in a process that saved the company a lot of money and guess what?

They were promoted almost immediately so try to find those areas that you can actually make an impact.

Step three to becoming a senior BA is to master business strategy and decision making.

The best senior BAs think beyond requirements.

They understand how the business makes money and how projects align with the strategy.

How do you actually even begin with your strategic thinking?

The first thing is to learn business models, revenue streams, and cost structures.

You also want to understand how executives make decisions such as looking at KPIs, ROIs, risk management.

Start asking why instead of just asking what do you need, what do I need to do next, start asking why.

It will help you to uncover those lower level details as well as the root cause of the problem.

Step four is to develop your leadership and influence skills.

This is really important in order to be promoted, right?

Senior BAs aren't just great analysts.

They are leaders who influence decisions, they mentor others and they drive change.

So here's how to show leadership before you're a senior BA.

One way is to run stakeholder workshops and facilitate discussions.

Don't just leave the work to other BAs or other senior members of your team to run those workshops.

Take charge, take leadership in running workshops.

Another thing you can do in showing leadership

that you have the senior BA qualities is to mentor junior BA's or new team members that are joining your organization.

Make yourself open, let your manager know that you are open to mentoring new BA's, you are open to mentoring junior BA's, to show them your skills,

to talk to them about processes, strategy and various information that you've already gathered within the organization as a PA.

Another thing you can do is to start presenting solutions in leadership meetings.

You know generally organizations will have these leadership meetings and making yourself known is through doing those presentations,

talking, sharing your progress in projects

and letting them know the impact is having on strategy on processes

and general value add so letting them know speak use your voice will get you out there

step five to moving from junior to senior is to position yourself for the promotion now

that you've built the right skills the soft skills the hard

skills the communication the confidence it's time to position yourself for

the actual senior role you want to update your resume your linkedin you want to showcase your senior level projects

and leadership activities you also want to have the promotion conversation tell your manager i've been leading x

and mentoring the team what would it take for me to move into a senior role right

if your company won't promote you look elsewhere look elsewhere don't wait

don't wait okay for example a ba that i mentored switched companies
