1
Hello everyone, this is your IELTS Tutor Jack and in today's episode of the IELTS Plus podcast,
2
we're going to be talking about adventure.
3
So I think this is a really interesting one because this is a good opportunity to talk about your experiences,
4
in this case about adventures.
5
It could be from your childhood,
6
in my case I'm going to talk about some of my travel experiences,
7
but it should be interesting.
8
You'll learn more about me today.
9
Now, a couple of notes before we start.
10
Firstly, there is a textbook that goes along with all of these episodes.
11
So you'll get all of the wonderful vocabulary,
12
which I'm showing the camera now.
13
There's some really nice vocabulary today.
14
Some adjectives such as thrilling, adventurous.
15
There's some nouns in here that I would like to add to my answers today,
16
such as adrenaline, expedition, mountaineering.
17
All of this will be available at www.britplus.net.
18
That is my home for my business and you'll be able to get all of my textbooks there.
19
So in today's lesson, one more note actually before we start and perhaps you saw this last episode.
20
I do now on the YouTube channel,
21
I provide all of the subtitles.
22
And in the subtitles, I highlight the words that are from the textbook.
23
So these are key words for that topic.
24
You'll be able to see that on my YouTube channel.
25
I think that's useful.
26
And today, yeah, we're talking about adventure.
27
So the concept I want to start with today is thinking about what type of person you are.
28
Are you a risk taker?
29
or are you risk averse?
30
These are opposites, of course.
31
One of them means you like taking risks.
32
One of them means you avoid taking risks.
33
For me personally, I would say nowadays I'm a little more risk averse.
34
I'm avoiding risk a little bit more in my private life and also in business.
35
so that is your key question for today i would like you to answer in the comments
36
or wherever you can give me your answer are you a risk taker
37
or are you risk averse and just give me a little detail about
38
that why do you say you're a risk taker
39
or risk averse i will check all of your answers in YouTube or wherever you leave them.
40
And I think we can get straight into this.
41
There is a student question,
42
a question from one of my listeners.
43
I'm going to answer it a little later because it's connected to part two.
44
So let's just warm up.
45
So I'm getting my questions here now.
46
The first question is, do you enjoy adventure activities?
47
Yes, I do enjoy adventure activities,
48
but it depends on what type of activities.
49
Nowadays, I'm a little uncomfortable with heights.
50
So some of the activities I used to enjoy have become difficult for me, such as mountaineering.
51
It is something I want to get over.
52
So that's one of my targets or New Year's resolutions is to overcome my fear of heights.
53
next one what is the most adventurous thing you have ever
54
done wow um i mean i guess the most adventurous thing
55
i've ever done would be it could be related to mountaineering
56
but i'm going to say my trip to australia
57
because it was very unplanned and it was dangerous but in the end it turned out to be a wonderful holiday.
58
Okay, that's everything for part one.
59
Now let's move on to part two,
60
where we are giving a two minute answer.
61
As you know, I do not prepare this.
62
So I haven't, I don't have my one minute preparation time,
63
but I'm going to use my structure,
64
which you can get in the textbook and freestyle an answer.
65
Today's question is going to be,
66
describe an adventure you had okay really simple one today
67
and it gives us an opportunity to pick an experience
68
and focus on it okay
69
so I'm going to put two minutes on my clock here you go two minutes is ready
70
and let's begin I'd like to tell you about my trip to Australia I went to Australia in 2009
71
and it was the end of a period of work
72
that I wasn't enjoying so it was quite spontaneous that I decided to go to Australia quickly,
73
no plans and I was going to stay there for a whole year.
74
At the time I had done a lot of research on Australia
75
and I thought that it was a good place to work and be able to earn my money and continue traveling.
76
It was going to be expensive.
77
And I thought that perhaps I would have the courage to do that.
78
It would be difficult, but I thought perhaps I have the courage to do that.
79
So let me tell you a little more about my trip to Australia.
80
Australia is probably famous for the outback.
81
So I was quite interested in perhaps learning bushcraft and finding your way,
82
navigating the countryside, in this case,
83
the dangerous bush, which people often talk about when talking about Australia.
84
So I started in Sydney,
85
but very quickly I moved into the Blue Mountains
86
and I saw snakes and spiders and all these awful dangerous things
87
but it really helped me it helped me overcome my fear of spiders for example
88
so for me personally this experience was really important i would say pivotal in my life
89
because it allowed me to overcome a number of fears it
90
made me realize what i'm capable of it really tested me this whole one year in Australia.
91
And it also, of course,
92
gave me a number of exciting experiences where,
93
wow, I wasn't quite ready then.
94
I still had plenty more to say,
95
but that's my two minutes up.
96
By the way, you will see me glancing to my right as I'm answering these questions
97
because I have my list of vocabulary and I would like to try to get some of them in.
98
So yeah, a few of these turned out to be very useful, such as bushcraft.
99
Bushcraft, of course, is a very important skill if you're in Australia in the bush trying to survive.
100
So I will do that.
101
Now, I told you I'm gonna answer a student question today.
102
I will try to do this.
103
So please do leave your questions and I will always try to answer them in episodes,
104
in upcoming episodes.
105
And in this case, let me just read.
106
Now, I don't know how to pronounce your name,
107
but let's just say Nahian.
108
I do apologize for that.
109
He said, in part two cue card,
110
we have to answer according to the tense of the topic.
111
If the question is in the past form,
112
then we should also describe it in the past form.
113
This structure contradicts the structure you use,
114
referring to my structure in my textbook.
115
You're absolutely right.
116
So basically, you are going to notice in part two,
117
there are questions that are past focused,
118
present focused, sometimes future focused when it talks about hopes.
119
Still, you can stick to my principle of start in the past,
120
move to the present and move to the future.
121
the only area and i say this in my textbook in the the present section
122
which is the middle section the description section you can be flexible with
123
that if you listen to what i just gave now part two about adventure past tense i really focused on
124
that past moment i decided to go to Australia then in
125
the present section normally we switch to present I was flexible
126
and I elaborated on my past story
127
so in answer to you it's flexible primarily the middle section is description
128
but most of the time I'd like you to try to move it to present tense if you can
129
because that shows diversity of tense.
130
You can always mention the future, right?
131
In this case, it's a past focused,
132
but you can always say in the future,
133
I hope to go back to Australia.
134
And you won't be marked down for that.
135
If they're asking a past tense question,
136
showing diversity of tense in your answer is absolutely fine.
137
It's not marked down.
138
So I hope that answers your question.
139
Let's move on to part three.
140
So the first question in part three,
141
why do some people like to do adventurous activities?
142
I think that some people just find it thrilling.
143
They like to do adventurous activities i think
144
that um some people just find it thrilling uh they like to get an adrenaline rush
145
and i really feel like it's something you're born with you you either really love getting
146
that adrenaline that thrill from an activity or not so you'll find some people like to go mountaineering,
147
surfing, any climbing, some activities that can make you nervous,
148
whereas others just tend to avoid it.
149
I also would add that we change over time and perhaps as we get older,
150
we become less thrill-seeking.
151
Next, part three.
152
What are the risks of adventure sports
153
and activities obviously the the the risk of adventure sports
154
and activities is injury or even death we do see this depending on the sport
155
that you play or the sport
156
that you the activity you do uh there are different dangers
157
but most of the time there's some form form of risk of injury such as,
158
in my case, I'm familiar with mountaineering.
159
So breaking an ankle, breaking a leg,
160
falling from a ledge, that kind of thing.
161
So I'd say the risks are physical and it really relates to injury.
162
And in the most extreme cases, death.
163
Okay, that was a pretty grim answer, right?
164
Okay, finally, how has the popularity of adventure tourism changed over the years?
165
I don't know the answer to this,
166
but I would say adventure tourism has become more popular.
167
The reason for this is social media,
168
I think, really favors adventurous activities.
169
If you do something adventurous,
170
it looks great on social media.
171
It makes a great video on Instagram or YouTube.
172
And I think people like to copy what they see.
173
so due to social media due to sharing
174
and this new culture we have i would say adventure activities have become more popular great
175
that was pretty concise um i hope i used some of today's language i'm looking through it now
176
and i definitely used at least five or six of them
177
and most of all i hope you enjoyed today's episode as i asked you please leave your answers below
178
and I will check them.
179
Are you a risk taker or are you risk averse?
180
So thanks again for listening today.
181
I hope you have a wonderful week and do study hard.
182
I'll be back next week for our next topic, which is advertising.
183
I've seen this a number of times.
184
It's a very popular topic.
185
So that's next week's topic, advertising.
186
See you then.
187
Bye-bye.
188
you
