Hi, I'm Sam Tucker from Apple and many people often ask us,
2
why does every upgrade cost $200 instead of what it actually costs?
3
Whether it's RAM, storage or a chip, they're all very different things with very different components,
4
yet magically very similar prices.
5
That's just incredible.
6
Well today we're gonna use virtual reality to explore an incredible world where our prices actually reflect how much things cost.
7
Welcome to the whimsical world of AR.
8
Actual reality.
9
Yeah, we haven't been here for a while.
10
Alright, let's start with storage.
11
Now customers were surprised to find that the new Mac mini actually has a removable SSD inside.
12
Which had people thinking that maybe they could buy the cheap base model mini and then upgrade the storage themselves later.
13
But under closer inspection, you'll notice that this isn't a standard M.2 module,
14
no. It's actually an F.U module that isn't compatible with any of the other storage options on the market.
15
But now let's use AR to turn this proprietary connector into the same one that every other manufacturer in the world uses.
16
And then you'll notice that instead of storage costing something like an extra $1,200 it actually only costs $300.
17
Oh, but is that storage as fast as the internal one?
18
Well, their number does look bigger than our number, but I'll be honest.
19
I only have Apple intelligence, and so the only thing I really look for is this pro word on it.
20
Which means it must be good.
21
Wow, we've saved $900 already.
22
Let's move on to RAM.
23
Now since we changed over to Apple Silicon, we also also un-evated the RAM, so that instead of being able to swap it out yourself,
24
it's now been fully integrated inside the chip.
25
Except, it's not.
26
Look, it's right there.
27
Can't we just pop that off like Lego or something?
28
Well, alright, for whatever reason, the RAM has to be this close to the chip, instead of this close to the chip.
29
Which is a shame for you.
30
Because if it was separate,
31
then instead of 32 gigabytes of RAM costing $200 plus $200 It would only be something like a hundred
32
and ten and that's with RGB or B Y B
33
Pink which would have saved you another 290 heck Thunderbolts getting
34
so fast now you're probably wondering why you can't just plug some more RAM in the side like a USB stick If only.
35
Unfortunately, technology like that is far off in the past. With Vista!
36
How the heck does that pile of crap do it?
37
Finally, let's look at the chip.
38
Now, the main update between last year's Macs and the new ones is the M4 chip.
39
But since the chip is stuck to the board, if you want to upgrade to the new one, then you have to buy a whole new computer.
40
But what if the whole chip was removable?
41
Then you'd be able to upgrade your chip and your RAM whenever you want.
42
Oh, but can you socket a powerful chip?
43
Well, in actual reality, of course you can!
44
Like AMD's Epic 9655P that scores 158,000 points for Gryffindor and only costs $10,000.
45
Holy moly!
46
Guess AMD uses Apple math as well.
47
In fact, all of these chips are pretty expensive.
48
It's like they cost more than the computers they come in.
49
But anyway, even if you do have to buy a whole new computer, if the chips were able to just pop out and pop in,
50
then theoretically, you could get yourself an M4 Mac Mini and just plug its chip into your M3 MacBook Pro,
51
giving it a powerful upgrade.
52
Or you could upgrade your old M2 iMac, or even make something that Apple doesn't do, and that's an M4 MacBook Air,
53
bringing your current savings amount to a lot.
54
Wow, what a crazy place that would be, huh?
55
Unfortunately, we're stuck in this timeline,
56
where Apple says they save the environment by forcing you to buy a whole new computer just to upgrade.
57
But.. they do wrap it in paper.
58
You're welcome.
59
Subscribe to Dick!
60
Come on guys, no one's gonna buy this actual reality.
61
It's too unbelievable.
