1
Welcome to Birmingham, my home city.
2
Today we're going to be taking you around Birmingham,
3
showing you what it's like and also teaching you some English along the way.
4
So if we say a word that I think maybe might be new to you,
5
the definition will come on screen
6
so you get to see a little part of the UK and learn some English at the same time.
7
Let's go!
8
Right, we're in Birmingham New Street.
9
This used to be not a very cool station,
10
but then when I was younger,
11
they redid it all and now they've got like...
12
Done it up.
13
Yeah, they have done it up, definitely.
14
And up here on the top,
15
they've got all these restaurants and shops so
16
if you're catching a train here and your trains delayed or you've got an hour wait there's plenty of restaurants.
17
It's actually quite a nice place just to hang out to be honest.
18
We've had just like food,
19
they just come here for food sometimes.
20
Yeah, really nice.
21
And they've got this amazing bowl here which was for...
22
This bowl was for the
23
Commonwealth Games which is a little bit like the Olympic Games but for the countries in the Commonwealth.
24
It was in Birmingham in 2020 21,
25
22, something like that I think.
26
And so then, yeah, look at this bull.
27
This is the first thing that you'll see when you come to Birmingham, this big bull.
28
So make sure you see him,
29
take some pictures, he's very cool.
30
Look at this bull moving, I love it.
31
That was directly at me, that felt personal.
32
So if you're coming to Birmingham,
33
your ticket might take you to Birmingham New Street,
34
New Street or you might see Birmingham Moore Street
35
which is a station right next to Birmingham New Street they are five minutes apart
36
so don't worry if you go to Birmingham New Street or Birmingham Moore Street you are in the centre of Birmingham.
37
So we're here at Joe and the Juice.
38
We've come here a couple of times to be It's very nice,
39
Birmingham New Street, just to sit up here,
40
people watch a little bit,
41
see Ozzy the Bull, set you up for a nice day of shopping or eating out or going to the theatre.
42
There's lots of things to do in Birmingham.
43
I'm really excited for today.
44
I've had a Prince of Green,
45
whoa, which is just pineapple, cucumber and lemon.
46
It's very cucumber-y.
47
That is like heavy on the cucumber.
48
That is a huge bird.
49
Is that a real bird?
50
What is that?
51
Is that real?
52
It's not real.
53
It's the worn off pigeon.
54
I was gonna say that's huge!
55
So we're about to go into the Bullring Market which is a shopping centre but it's called the Bullring because I think,
56
oh, hundreds of years ago,
57
maybe like 400 years ago,
58
maybe, they used to have bull baiting in there.
59
So they had loads of bulls and they used to,
60
like, get dogs to attack the bulls or something like that.
61
I spent a lot of time here as a child.
62
I came here with my friends,
63
it was kind of like the meet-up spot that you would come to.
64
And it's a great place to go shopping.
65
If you need to get some stuff, there's everything.
66
And my favourite shop in the whole world is called Selfridges.
67
We're going to go there.
68
Hello, bull.
69
I might have to get some macarons.
70
I love macarons so much.
71
So Selfridges is like this big department store.
72
They have everything and the Birmingham one is an incredible Selfridges.
73
So they've got makeup, clothes,
74
gifts, alcohol, food, cards, toys, everything.
75
Me and Laura actually like coming here around Christmas time.
76
It's a very good place to come at Christmas time just for...
77
Yeah, just for a browse sometimes, just for a mooch.
78
This bottle looks pretty cool.
79
Whapass!
80
Absolutely iconic to Birmingham is Cadbury chocolate.
81
I think it's gone international.
82
I think you can get Cadbury chocolate in other places,
83
but you've got to get Cadbury chocolate.
84
It is the best chocolate.
85
It was made in Birmingham.
86
And if you come to Birmingham,
87
you can actually go to Cadbury World,
88
which is like a theme park for Cadbury chocolate,
89
which is a great day out.
90
So yeah, they named one of their bars Bourneville because that's where Cadbury is made,
91
in a place called Bourneville.
92
Oh, there's a shop down there called Passing Fancies.
93
A passing fancy is something that you really want for a second,
94
but then it's gone.
95
You don't want it for a life,
96
but I just have a passing fancy for it.
97
It does look a little bit like me.
98
It's quite a nice place to come here sometimes just to...
99
I don't know if anybody else feels like this,
100
but me and Laura sometimes just really fancy going out shopping.
101
Sometimes it's just nice to go shopping, just window shopping.
102
I don't necessarily have to buy anything,
103
but Selfridges is quite a nice place just to come and...
104
It's kind of like an experience,
105
do you know what I mean?
106
Ooh, sushi!
107
I really like in Birmingham you have the contrast of the very new,
108
so all your shops and everything,
109
but then right next to it you've got your very old.
110
So this is St Martin's Church,
111
it's from 1855 is when it was completed.
112
And it's just such a nice sort of reminder of the history of Britain
113
alongside all the new stuff
114
because of course we want all the new stuff we want the sharps we want all of
115
that fun stuff but then also like look at this amazing architecture we can have nice thing that's
116
so cool Chinese restaurants are opening we're filming this around well
117
right at the moment it's about 11 o'clock in the morning um
118
so everything's kind of gearing up for the day i suppose
119
the good thing about the really nice thing about Birmingham is that there's a lot of diversity
120
I think the multiculturalism of Birmingham is part of its identity.
121
Yeah.
122
It's part of the fact that you can get food from any corner of the world in Birmingham
123
and it's always amazing because we've got all cultures here.
124
It's great, it's great fun.
125
When I was growing up,
126
this was the meeting point.
127
When me and my friends came to Birmingham,
128
we'd say, right, I'll meet you at the Bull.
129
This is where I met all my friends growing up.
130
An absolutely iconic landmark of Birmingham.
131
You've got to come see it if you come to Birmingham.
132
The Bull.
133
I think they call him Bully.
134
I think his name is officially Bully.
135
I think it's Bully the Bull.
136
I'm pretty sure.
137
Also in Birmingham there is the tram service,
138
which is very, very useful for just travelling around the city.
139
You can just hop on and hop off.
140
You can see the tram lines here and right on cue, here's the tram.
141
It's amazing and it's actually one of those kind of buildings that I think people in the UK take for granted.
142
Brits like to travel abroad and go to see like different cities like European cities and things like that of course.
143
And I often think if that was in another country,
144
people would go and people would flock there and take pictures of it and that kind of thing.
145
But it's just there in Birmingham and people just walking past.
146
Not really that bothered to be honest.
147
And it's amazing, I think.
148
So this water fountain up here is called the floozy and the jacuzzi.
149
So the floozy, a floozy is quite a derogatory term actually
150
for a woman who likes to take her clothes off maybe or a woman who is a bit promiscuous, a floozy.
151
We don't really use it in modern day English
152
but yeah she looks like she's in a jacuzzi so it's called informally the floozy in the jacuzzi. so so
153
So we're now heading to the library which again is relatively new in Birmingham.
154
It's quite a new addition and I remember it being built.
155
Again, it's free to go in,
156
it's got some really cool viewpoints.
157
You can go right to the top and you can see all of Birmingham,
158
well not all of it but a good chunk of it.
159
So yeah, let's go have a look in the library.
160
And we've just stumbled upon,
161
it must be graduation day, which feels weird.
162
I thought graduation was supposed to be in the summer.
163
Well, it's September at the moment.
164
But yeah, it's a university city.
165
Here is the library.
166
A lot of people didn't like the design when it was first revealed.
167
It's still very controversial, quite divisive.
168
A lot of people in Birmingham don't like it.
169
I like it!
170
It's fine, it's cool.
171
It's like a wedding cake.
172
It does look a bit like a wedding cake.
173
I think it's fun.
174
So we're going to go inside,
175
have a little look around.
176
I think it's great to have in the middle of a city,
177
a huge, big library all about books and reading.
178
I think it's nice and let's have a look
179
I wonder how many books are in this library I reckon
180
there's at least five it's actually really nice up here
181
and you got like the hustle and bustle of the city but actually up here it's very calm and quiet
182
this is the shakespeare collection guess what they have in here shakespeare stuff
183
We're now in my favourite part of Birmingham, this is Brinley Place.
184
It's a big area with canal running through it, they've got restaurants.
185
It's just a really nice place to come if you want a meal or if you want to have a walk,
186
this is probably the best bit.
187
Anyone from Birmingham will tell you that there are more canals in Birmingham than in Venice.
188
So that is the big fact that everyone likes to tell you.
189
There are more canals running through Birmingham than Venice,
190
and look at them, they're beautiful.
191
Yeah, I like this area a lot.
192
This is probably my favorite bit.
193
Behind me is Broad Street,
194
and that is where the best nightlife is in Birmingham.
195
So if you're here for a night out or a good time,
196
maybe pop to Broad Street.
197
35 miles of canal Birmingham has.
198
During the industrial revolution this is one of the reasons why Birmingham kind of grew so much,
199
the industry grew so much because they could transport goods in and out of the city.
200
We're heading to the custard factory which doesn't make custard
201
but it used to make custard and now they've turned it into this cool like district with shops,
202
restaurants, and pubs.
203
It's just kind of really cool,
204
artistic, fun little place to come. so Hello,
205
it's me.
206
I'm editing this and I just realised we didn't say goodbye in this video.
