1
Change is so difficult because you're going into the unknown.
2
You're going into a place where there's discomfort.
3
And what paints the difficulty for most all of us are those really difficult emotions.
4
The fear, the frustration, the anxiety.
5
So the types of change that can happen in the workforce, change that I've experienced on a personal level, change that I now get to work with clients all over the world around,
6
is often that change that feels like it happens to you that you didn't ask for it.
7
Like being given a new manager, like your business being acquired by another company, like your leadership getting changed,
8
getting a new CEO, getting a new executive team.
9
All of these changes seemingly are outside of our control, and it feels like it's happening to us.
10
That's the type of change that can really inspire what what I call the acute signal emotions, strong fear, the strong anxiety.
11
Anxiety is the number one emotion that's felt when going through that type of change in the workplace.
12
Because it's where the unknown lies, right?
13
Change has been announced, something's gonna be different in your work, and you're not exactly sure what or how.
14
So there's more questions than answers.
15
That's where anxiety runs rampant.
16
Too often we are taught or we have learned to suppress those emotions, to ignore them, to just lean into the change,
17
grit your teeth and bear it and get through it, especially in the business world, in the professional setting, because the change has to happen.
18
You got to get through it.
19
So let go of those emotions and just grit your teeth and bear it.
20
But I think that that's a miss and really a missed opportunity to find the richness of experience of change.
21
over time we've seen our human resources as just capital resources to get the work done
22
and really wanting to let go of the emotional aspect of those resources
23
but you can't it's it's intrinsic for all of us emotion is always with us because we are naturally human emotional beings.
24
You need that emotional energy.
25
Emotion is what builds brands.
26
Emotion is what makes brands rich and helps us get tied in and bought into a brand.
27
Same thing goes with moving business forward.
28
And so it's so important that we celebrate that and the full spectrum, not just the excitement, not just the anticipation,
29
but all the full spectrum that we as human beings bring to the forefront.
30
I always think back to my experiences when I was working in corporate and in a more traditional role
31
and I went through my very first multi-billion dollar acquisition.
32
I actually transferred into the business that had been acquired
33
and I was charged with not only continuing delivering breakthrough innovation as a chemical engineer and as a manager,
34
but also to help integrate the parent company tools and processes.
35
And I am telling you, when I walked through the door of that business, it was like I had quit working at the company
36
that I thought I worked for and I was now working for a completely different company.
37
It was a very us versus them type of culture.
38
There was a lot of clash.
39
And I felt like no matter how much I tried to add value to the business, sharing my ideas, my perspective, it was always met against a brick wall.
40
And I kept thinking, this is not a place where I can grow.
41
My colleagues are not going to have my back.
42
And I ultimately need to quit.
43
And it was in that moment, actually, that change enthusiasm, the mindset was born.
44
I went in and decided to speak with a mentor of mine.
45
And this was a last ditch effort for me before I just quit and walked out the door.
46
And I told her all my woes.
47
And honestly, I told her everything short of like firing my manager
48
and then promoting me so that I could fire the other eight people that I was having a difficult time with.
49
And fortunately, she gave me very sage advice and she told me, Cassandra, you can either get bitter or you can get better.
50
And that's your choice.
51
And at first I'm thinking it can't be my choice.
52
I'm not the one in a position of influence.
53
It's you.
54
But the more that I let those words of wisdom marinate bitter or better, I started to realize that I did have a choice on how I experienced change.
55
And I decided to allow that emotion that I felt to signal me into a moment of opportunity.
56
And I decided to use that energy to transform it into fuel, to move me forward in that business and in my career.
57
And just switching and nurturing that mindset, it was a step change in my entire career and my trajectory.
