Although Tết has changed throughout the years, this activity is still an essential part of Vietnamese Lunar New Year.

It is said that giving Li Xi, a tiny red envelope filled with money in Lunar New Year is a custom originated from China.

The convention of this traditional custom had its roots about an orge called Tui.

He always appeared on New Year's Eve, rubbing small children's heads to make them burst into loud wheels and get high fever.

Third, the whole family had to stay awake all night to protect their children.

There was a middle-aged couple in that village who had been waiting for many years until the first child was born.

That year, eight gods went by their house predicting that some bad things might happen to the child.

So the gods disguised themselves as eight coins and stayed with the child to protect him.

After the child had slept, the wife used the red papers to wrap the coins and put them under the child's pillow.

At night, the Orge supposedly approached to touch the child's head.

But suddenly, the eight coins began to shine so bright that frightened the Orge.

After that, the Orge ran away in terror.

After hearing this story, the villagers spread the words everywhere.

They also began placing red envelopes filled with coins under the pillow at night.

Gradually, this act turned to be a New Year's custom and when it spread to Vietnam, it is called Lì Sì.

From that time on, this tradition still being preserved as an indispensable part in Vietnam's Tết festival.

Nowadays, during Tết holiday, people visit relatives

or friends' house to give their greetings for new year at this moment the adults will give lisi to elders

and children as a way to send their wishes of health
