1
This guy has over 3000 hours on Sage.
2
This is Grimm, a Radiant Sage one trick who's been styling on people with funny walls
3
and insane Sage plays since the very start of Valorant's inception.
4
If you have any plans on learning how to play Sage, this guy has to be one of the best references to study.
5
In this video, we'll be breaking down exactly what makes this mastermind the best battle sage in Valorant.
6
Grimm's Sage journey into Valorant started with a discovery he had made, while messing around in some custom lobbies looking for creative Sage walls.
7
So I started experimenting.
8
I went on Ascent and a custom one day, and I was jumping off of Generator on A -Site.
9
And I remember one time I shift walked off and I jumped, and the wall was longer.
10
And I was like, "Oh my god, this is huge!
11
I'm on top !" And the wall was long.
12
And I was like, "Wait, what else can I do?"
13
I think after that I spent a whole month just in customs looking at all the walls I could do.
14
This technique that Grim mentioned during an interview with The Score is the quintessential technique
15
that a majority of his patented TikTok walls incorporate.
16
For this video, we'll be labeling it as the extended wall technique.
17
If you've ever tried to wall on top of a surface, normally you'll notice the wall will only have two or three segments, rather than four that usually make up the ice wall.
18
are the same height as the ledge, it'll extend the wall to have an extra segment that's placed below your feet.
19
A similar technique can be done by jumping next to a ledge you want a wall on top of.
20
Crouch at the apex of your jump right before you place the wall.
21
We suggest you be a bit further away from the ledge so you can maximize the extension of the wall.
22
If you want some further explanation on how to do this technique or for some example walls, check out our full Grim Wall Guide here.
23
Make sure the placement of your feet is lined up to where the segments of the wall meet
24
that might explain it a little better than I can.
25
This technique is the keystone to how Grimm creates a majority of his game -breaking walls.
26
So ensure that you spend some time practicing it, since it is a bit difficult to learn at first.
27
Continuing on the topic of techniques that Sage mains should know, let's discuss the Crouch Bug Jump.
28
Now don't be too afraid of the naming convention.
29
We've chosen this since it's been in the game since the closed beta
30
and is seen by most as a movement tool rather than a bug itself.
31
The general gist of the technique is you're able to jump on top of walls that are Jump next to the surface, hold the crouch button as you rise during the jump,
32
and then let go of the crouch button as you reach the apex of your jump.
33
This sequence of actions causes your player model to feel like it gets sucked up on the lip of the wall, placing you on top of it.
34
This is how you can perform crazy jump tricks like this on maps like Ascent.
35
This technique is also not speed dependent, so you can do it with any weapon.
36
In this round on Split, Grim's team opts to hit A -side.
37
Grim uses a wall to boost himself onto this off angle at Hell where you can hold
38
if any defenders decide to push out of the Heaven Smoke.
39
Unfortunately, the Phoenix Flashes out of the smoke, forcing Grim to fall off the wall and find some cover while he's blind.
40
But once the chaos dies down, Grim wants to get back up onto the wall so he can continue holding this strong
41
while also having the option to push onto rafters.
42
So, he uses the Crouch Bug Jump to get himself back onto the wall where he was originally.
43
A regular jump just doesn't give enough height for a person to get back on the wall once it's already placed.
44
As you can see, this technique allows Sages to always have a backup plan to maneuver back onto their walls
45
if they just need a bit more height to their jump.
46
So, for all you Sage mains out there, put a little time into practicing this movement.
47
The most common option Grimm implements into his games is the infamous boost walls that
48
Although many of these walls accomplish the goal of getting Grimm to a higher elevation, there are tiny nuances between each one that give them all their own unique traits.
49
Let's start with the boost walls for smokes.
50
A very common situation that literally every Valorant player runs into is
51
when they're holding an angle but they get smoked and they lose vision on the angle they were just holding.
52
Due to our short stature, we aren't able to get a clear view above these smokes, but with a wall boost, we make ourselves high enough to see over the smoke even if it's just the tiniest little gap.
53
played in this round on Ascent.
54
Grim's team chose to execute onto A -Site with Killjoy Ultimate.
55
As the Killjoy ult gets placed, the enemy Omen reacts by placing a smoke onto A main in order to delay the push from the attackers.
56
This is when Grim implements a boost wall that's placed on the backside of A main, giving him a killer off angle
57
that peeks way above the A main smoke to watch if any defenders are peeking from heaven.
58
Grim also ensures the placement of the wall is as far
59
away from the smoke in order to give himself the most angle advantage as well as give his teammates
60
space to push onto A site without having to run into his ice wall.
61
This cheeky wall gives Grimm the perfect peek to frag the omen standing in heaven.
62
A nice bonus is
63
that Grimm also has a clear line of sight to heaven
64
for throwing a slow orb to dissuade any other defenders from peeking.
65
Even when defending, these smoke walls are ever -present.
66
Take a look at this split game after finding a frag onto the brimstone heaven.
67
Grimm rotates towards the site to use one of his signature B site walls.
68
This wall is fantastic for giving yourself an off angle for anyone who's peeking from either B main rafters.
69
Make sure that the wall is angled just slightly to the left
70
when placing it or it won't create the necessary segment that gives you the B main peak.
71
Anyways, as Grim moves over to hold B main from the boost, you may notice a tiny gap at the bottom left of the B main exit.
72
Since many of the smokes in Valorant are shaped like spheres, whereas choke points for most maps are cubes or rectangular hallways,
73
These small gaps in the top corners will be present due to the shape mismatch.
74
Understanding this, Grim holds the small window and kills the enemy Raze who's not even remotely ready for this fight.
75
Many of the defender -sided boost walls
76
that overlook similar choke points to this one will also have these small lines of sight.
77
Always be aware if there are any gaps to exploit whenever a smoke is placed.
78
A concept that's arguably more important is understanding when to use a boost wall.
79
In the fifth round of this same match, Grimm's team had just lost the previous round and was now forced to eco.
80
Recognizing that they're at a huge economic disadvantage going into this round, Grimm creates a plan where he boosts himself up on top of this podium
81
so he can give himself an unexpected angle towards rafters.
82
On top of this, Grimm knows that the fight he wants to take is going to be a far range duel, so he decides to buy a Marshall, a cheap weapon that is deadly at far ranges.
83
with the one -shot headshot potential.
84
Doesn't matter if the enemy has full buy, if you can position yourself to fight them on your own terms.
85
In our This One Rule Will Save You Rounds video,
86
we go over this principle of valuing aggressive and unexpected plays whenever you're at an economic disadvantage and extensive detail.
87
Unfortunately, none of the defenders give Grim the peek he's looking for.
88
Still, it's the thought process of how he can decide to
89
use this wall to create a surprising situation for the enemies that also played to the strengths of highlight.
90
When we call Grimm a battle sage, we really mean it.
91
He's not afraid of taking fights when he has to, and that's the main reason he's constantly able to compete in Radiant lobbies against some of the best players in the game.
92
Think of these walls as the frosting, and your fundamentals are the cake.
93
You've got to work on your fundamentals first before you're ever going to compete in ranks like this.
94
And fundamentals go far beyond things like crosshair placement and counterstrafing too.
95
It also includes things you probably don't even realize you're doing wrong, or even just where you choose to stand.
96
The players who are consistently able to drop 30 in their matches are masters of all these things, and now you could be as well, with our Aim God Masterclass.
97
It is expertly designed to teach you all the fundamentals you need to know in just one course.
98

102
We know it sounds insane, but our number one priority is to be a standing name in the community for years to come.
103
And the only way to do that is to create the best product we can.
104
Check it out using the link below.
105
Even with all these fancy wall boosts, Grimm still uses his wall in very standard ways that anyone can do, right?
106
But he maximizes his value out of these walls by making sure that they serve multiple purposes.
107
The most standard wall that's used is the mid wall on split, particularly on the pistol round.
108
This wall is powerful at stopping the enemies from quickly rushing
109
down mid due to pistols lacking the damage to break down the ice wall quickly.
110
It gives defenders a sense of security when rotating because they have solid covers they pass through vents and mail.
111
But this isn't the only purpose of this wall.
112
In the next round, he places the exact same mid wall, but instead of just using it to quickly rotate between big enough to hide in.
113
This gap gives Grimm an unpredictable position to play.
114
It forces the attackers to have to fully check this pocket in order to clear his position, and it also creates a deadly crossfire with his raise that's in mail.
115
Creating these cheeky little pockets when creating any of your standard walls, it adds an extra layer of depth to how you can play around your walls.
116
Another typical example of how walls are used is to give cover to teammates as you res them.
117
A lot of day one sages are able to come up with this idea of protecting the body of your teammates.
118
Using these very basic Sage walls, Grim repurposes these walls to find extra advantages when he can.
119
In this Ascent match, Grim's team is in a 3v4 situation.
120
With his Killjoy's body at Kat, they make their way there to Resurrector.
121
Grim places the wall to give the Killjoy some cover from any enemies from Tree.
122
However, right before the wall, he ensures that the placement of the wall lets him jump on top of it as it rises.
123
After he finishes using Res, he swiftly peeks at Kat from on top of his wall, catching the Rays off guard and solidifying a numbers advantage for his team.
124
This play works extremely well, because it's second nature for an enemy to peek out whenever they hear a Sage res to see
125
if there's a chance to kill it before it finishes.
126
So remember, if you're planning to use a pretty basic wall, see if there's any way to repurpose the wall for some other tactic at the same time.
127
Let's take a teeny tiny break from talking about walls to highlight some optimizations to how Grimm implements his slow orbs.
128
Specifically, how he shoots his slow orbs.
129
Looking at this clip, do you see anything inherently wrong with how this Sage threw the slow orb?
130
Pretty inconspicuous clip, but from the enemy's perspective, you're peeking out into danger, without any way to shoot back since you're holding your slow orb.
131
Sages peeking out like this with their slow orb are pretty vulnerable.
132
So what many pro sage players do is they use a jump peek to throw their slow orbs.
133
Here's a clip from our Every Type of Peek and When to Use Them video, explaining how to do the jump peek.
134
unlikely to get punished too hard for this when done right.
135
The most that you'll normally expect is a body shot.
136
To perform a jump peek, approach the angle and jump forward and then immediately hold the S
137
and A key or S and D key depending on where you're peeking.
138
The main strength
139
that comes with using this jump peek for your slow orb is you're a much harder agent to hit
140
and you expose yourself to danger for a much shorter amount of time.
141
Another benefit is you can use this jump peek for info with your slow orb already in hand
142
and then when you make contact with the enemy, fall if needed without any delay.
143
Continuing with the topic of Sage's Slow Orb, another quick and easy tip that Grimm frequently uses is layering smokes with slows.
144
Many of you have probably had this happen to you, right?
145
You're pushing A -Site on Split.
146
Heaven and Screens are smoked as your team pushes onto the site.
147
But as everyone is clearing angles, a defender pushes out of the Heaven smoke and kills everybody while they have their backs turned and you lose the round.
148
As a doesn't totally stop an enemy from peeking out of the smoke, it'll heavily dissuade them from doing so,
149
because slowly pushing out of a smoke is usually a losing duel to take.
150
In this Ascent retake, Grim gains info that the Sova is in B main, so to counteract this, he repeatedly keeps the B main chokepoint slowed in tandem with his Omen's B main smokes.
151
This combo of slows and smokes makes it almost impossible for the Sova to help his teammates on B site,
152
and as the retake one standing, still stuck in B main.
153
Look to use this utility combo whenever you can, so you can prevent enemies from making plays around your smokes.
154
We're now going to be delving into the much more niche use of the ice wall.
155
A funny gimmick that you can use to find a couple of kills throughout a match is using gap walls.
156
This is where a standard wall is placed on a choke point, but at an angle where a gap is left open just wide enough to peek through.
157
There's usually no inherent angle advantage by doing this,
158
Grim uses a gap wall on B main and is able to clearly find two frags thanks to this unorthodox wall.
159
It shouldn't be your go -to option when it comes to how to use your wall, but it can be a great mix -up option if you're looking to find some cheeky kills.
160
Another variation of the gap wall is to actually just make
161
a gap just big enough to be able to walk past it.
162
In this ascent clip, Grim hears a couple of attackers on B main, so he uses his wall at an angle where it looks like it covers the entrance,
163
but on the backside of the wall there's actually a gap that he can walk through.
164
sell that this isn't a wall with a gap, Grim even peeks from on top of the wall to pretend
165
that the sole purpose of it was to peek from on top.
166
After dropping, he immediately repositions to the backside, then peeks out onto unsuspecting enemies and finds a frag, turning the round into a 5v4 for his team.
167
Using some clever misdirection and a gap wall, he was able to outplay both the raise and the KO.
168
Feigning a purpose for your wall so that enemies fall into a different trap you've uses.
169
Look to pull out this type of battle sage thinking next time you pull out the sage.
