1
I have a very interesting subject.
2
I call it five simple steps to go from average to fortune.
3
I've been asked to give it in many places for corporations and companies and
4
now I have the opportunity to share it with you.
5
It's a pretty big subject for someone like me.
6
For my life started out rather modestly.
7
Up in farm country in Idaho where I was raised, I found a very beautiful young lady and persuaded her to marry me
8
and and kept making all of those grand promises as we're inclined to do, that everything was going to work well and that she had made a wise decision.
9
Well, two or three years after I'd gotten married, it didn't look like my new bride had made such a wise decision because I'm now starting to struggle.
10
I've got far too much month at the end of the money, if you've ever known what that's like.
11
And I'm wondering what to do.
12
I'm behind on my bills.
13
I'm willing to work hard.
14
That's not my problem, but it isn't as going as well as I had thought it would up until that point.
15
I'm struggling and I'm wondering what to do.
16
Should I go back to school and get some more education?
17
I didn't have any capital to start a business.
18
I met a very remarkable man.
19
His name was Mr. Shoeff, Mr. Earl Shoeff.
20
And he's the gentleman who gave me those last final answers that I had been looking for up until that time.
21
Mr. Shoeff was a very unique gentleman.
22
He was a businessman, an entrepreneur.
23
He had several businesses and he took a liking to me and he hired me and I went to work for him.
24
I spent the next five years working for him.
25
And then unfortunately, at the end of that five years, he died.
26
But I did get to spend five years with this remarkable man.
27
And he's the gentleman who gave me the answers.
28
He gave me the points and the ideas that helped to really turn my life around.
29
And about 17 years ago, I was living in Beverly Hills.
30
and I was going through all the notes that I'd gathered up during that five-year period and The idea came to me.
31
Why not share these ideas with other people?
32
I've used them to change my life Things have worked out well for me.
33
I wonder if others might find them interesting
34
So I put all of the material together
35
and five years ago gave my first lecture my first seminar
36
and Ever since then I've spent more and more of my time lecturing
37
and sharing ideas on how to do better how to make your life personally, socially, and economically work out better.
38
Let me give you this simple little talk, how to go from average to fortune.
39
There's five simple steps.
40
You might like to make a note of them.
41
Here's the first one.
42
Get serious.
43
That's number one.
44
I don't know any substitute for that.
45
You've really got to get serious.
46
You don't have to be grim, but you must be serious.
47
I know a guy that's got a half a dozen jokes keeping him from becoming wealthy.
48
He's not known as rich.
49
He's known as a joker, which I guess is okay if that's the kind of life you want to live.
50
But it really isn't the best way to live.
51
To go from average to fortune, you must get serious.
52
And you must get serious about two very important things.
53
Number one is setting your goals and where you want to go.
54
Designing the next five, the next 10 years is so vitally important.
55
What do you want to do economically?
56
Where do you want to go?
57
What do you want to be?
58
What would you like to have?
59
What would you like to share?
60
How much would you like to earn?
61
How far would you like to go?
62
Those are some major questions to ask and for
63
that all to work out like you wanted to for the next five or ten years In my personal opinion, you've got to get serious
64
Then you have to get serious about another important subject and that important subject is called personal development
65
Personal development is striving hard to become the kind of person that you want to be.
66
And to become the kind of person you want to be, you've got to work at it.
67
Ten years from now, you will surely become someone.
68
The big question is, who?
69
What are you becoming?
70
And if you go to work on it now, sure enough, in a very short period of time, you can take on a new direction to become the kind of person you want to be.
71
There's a very important question to ask and the question is 10 years from now you will surely arrive.
72
And the question is where?
73
So to answer the question of where you want to arrive and the kind of person you want to be, you've got to get serious.
74
So that's point number one.
75
To make your life worthwhile and unique to go from average to fortune, you've got to get serious.
76
Now, the second point is get smart.
77
To make your life work out worthwhile, you've got to have some ideas.
78
You've got to have the information.
79
So you've got to be smart.
80
In fact, in this decade, you must be much smarter than you were in the last decade.
81
You've got to read the books.
82
You've got to come up with the information.
83
When I have a chance to talk to the high school kids, that's the theme of my talk.
84
Get smart.
85
There's nothing worse than being stupid.
86
And if you will read the books, learn from your experiences, do all the things that you possibly can to get the information, sure enough, you'll be wiser this year than you were last year.
87
And I've got a few techniques that I teach in my seminar on how to get smarter.
88
Keeping a journal, going to the lectures, going to the seminars, listening to the sermons, picking up ideas from other people.
89
You just must keep up this steady process of learning.
90
Never cease your quest for knowledge.
91
And that's one of the key points to go from average to fortune.
92
Get smart.
93
Now here's number three.
94
You've got to get going.
95
All of the things that you've learned will not do you
96
that much good if you don't put it into an action plan.
97
You've got to get going.
98
In my management and leadership seminar, we teach game plans, how to put all the good things that you've learned into action.
99
Economic action, social action, personal action, how to make the changes and how to actually do the work, how to actually function.
100
Get going.
101
That's the key.
102
Some people are ever learning, but they don't put it into action.
103
They don't really take the action.
104
It's like the man who keeps bringing materials to the building site and never builds anything.
105
He keeps bringing in the sand and the gravel and the windows and the doors and the roofing material.
106
And he just stacks up all these supplies, but he never builds anything.
107
See, if you do that long enough fairly soon, they'll come and take you away.
108
You've got to do something with what you've learned.
109
You've got to take action.
110
You've got to get going.
111
So that's one of the most important things to learn how to design your days, how to design your weeks,
112
how to design the months so that you take the proper action to get the proper return that you're looking for, whether it's economic or personal.
113
Get going.
114
It's a major key.
115
Now, here's number four.
116
You must get excited.
117
And not just the false enthusiasm of just pure positive thinking.
118
You've got to get excited over some very basic things.
119
One is get excited over your ability to make yourself do the necessary things
120
because discipline is major step one toward personal progress and
121
Anytime a person wishes to they can make major changes in their life Personally and socially and financially.
122
It doesn't ever have to be the same after today
123
No telling what you could do today if you really wish to
124
The act of murder is a clear indication
125
that a person in one drastic act Can forever change the course of their life.
126
It just happens to be in the negative direction
127
What I would ask you to do starting today is get
128
excited about committing an act an Act that's positive an act that's constructive
129
To make the changes in your life that you want made and to go the direction that you want to go.
130
So that's number four Get excited.
131
Get excited about your potential.
132
Human capacity is usually never the problem.
133
Little children can learn several languages.
134
We can learn to do the most incredible things.
135
All we need to do is take the time to do it.
136
So it's not a matter of capacity.
137
It's a matter of judgment.
138
It's a matter of excitement.
139
It's a matter of will and it's a matter of wanting too bad enough.
140
So it's pretty exciting to know that any day you wish you can change your life.
141
Any day you pick out, you can make major changes.
142
It doesn't ever have to be the same again.
143
And that's exciting, knowing that intellectually and personally, you can actually do the things that will make major changes in your life.
144
That's number four.
145
Here's number five.
146
Number five is get away.
147
I have found, especially in the last 15, 20 years, that there's an important thing called life balance.
148
You've got to learn to get away.
149
You must learn to get away and be alone.
150
Learn to get away and reflect.
151
Learn to get away and learn how to live as well as how to earn.
152
How sad it would be to learn how to earn well, but not learn how to live well.
153
You must balance your life.
154
We teach something, especially in my staff, I teach us something called lifestyle.
155
Lifestyle is how you learn to live your life.
156
Some people have money, but they don't even know how to spend it.
157
They have time, but they don't know how to spend it.
158
Some people are successful, but they don't know how to spend their success.
159
They don't know what to do with it.
160
They don't get joy from it.
161
Rather, they get animosity.
162
A father takes $5, crushes it and throws it at his son and says, if you need it that bad, take it.
163
Now it's the same $5, but instead of dispensing it with joy, he dispenses it with animosity.
164
That's the difference in not knowing how to live to live.
165
It's called lifestyle.
166
Then you've got to take time to cultivate good friends.
167
You've got to take time to be with your family.
168
You've got to take time to be with the people who are important to you, designing your life in those respects.
169
Get away.
170
Take the time.
171
Reflect on your life, recharge your batteries, do some growing away from your enterprise.
172
Then when you come back to your enterprise, after you have taken this time to balance your life, you will find that on the job, working on your enterprise, things will really go much better.
173
So those are the five simple steps to go from average to fortune.
174
Get serious, get smart, get going, get excited, and get away.
175
I hope those points will be valuable for you as you consider them.
176
Do not walk in front of me, I may not follow.
177
Do not walk behind me, I may not lead, but walk beside me and be my friend.
178
Thank you for listening.
179
Thank you.
