레슨 만드는 중...
1
Dude, how much time do we have here?
2
Come on, man.
3
Look, here's the bottom line.
4
Did you catch it?
5
Here's the bottom line.
6
I love that.
7
That's a speaking technique.
8
It's called a summary prompt.
9
And it's just one of the speaking techniques that Barack Obama uses in his interview with Hassan Minhaj.
10
And it's what we're going to analyze here today.
11
Why is Barack so interesting to listen to?
12
We're going to cover four techniques that you can use in your work and personal life.
13
My name is Michael.
14
I'm a public speaking coach and I'm one of the creators of the Ultra Speaking Method.
15
And by the end of this video, you're going to have things
16
that you could use on the fly whenever you're speaking off the cuff to be more clear
17
and more interesting to listen to.
18
So let's break it down.
19
Number one, Barack Obama, you just saw it.
20
He uses this thing called summary prompts.
21
And these are little prompts for your brain and for the listener's brain to send one specific signal.
22
And it's this.
23
I'm about to give you the message.
24
So let's see it in action.
25
I guess this is the point I'm trying to make.
26
The point you're making though is a legitimate.
27
The point I was going to make it.
28
Here's the bottom line.
29
All he does the entire interview is say things like bottom line, the point I'm making.
30
I guess what I'm trying to say is he has a habit of summarizing often.
31
And this is one thing we've noticed that all the great speakers do.
32
They summarize their message often.
33
All right, number two.
34
Number two, and this is related.
35
Barack doesn't just give you the message.
36
He shows it to you.
37
He brings it to life and he uses a couple of techniques, but mostly analogies and examples.
38
Let me give you a specific example.
39
Here's an example.
40
Take an example.
41
Like here's another way of saying it.
42
Here's another way of saying it.
43
That's what he does throughout the entire interview.
44
And it's so effective.
45
He, like all great communicators, know, that there's no one way of explaining something.
46
So he's constantly trying to show you different ways of seeing an idea.
47
He uses examples, he uses analogies, in hopes that you can picture what he's saying.
48
And let's take a look at one of my favorite analogies that he uses in the interview.
49
He's asked about the human condition and he decides to talk about it using chimps and bananas.
50
We're a bunch of chimps with guns and big machines.
51
Yeah, talk that talk.
52
But we're basically still operating at chimp-like levels.
53
And it doesn't matter if you have enough, you know, you got a banana.
54
Somehow you still want everybody else's banana.
55
When you use examples and analogies, you're doing your listener a favor.
56
You're saying, let me paint the picture for you.
57
And it becomes much more interesting to listen to.
58
The bottom line is that great communicators don't just tell you something.
59
They find different ways to show you.
60
And what's great about this 30-minute interview is that throughout the 30 minutes, Barack is constantly in the habit of thinking, how else can I explain this idea?
61
And that's really what great communicators are constantly doing.
62
Okay, number three, let's jump to it.
63
So far, we've talked about what makes him so clear and so vivid.
64
But what is it that makes him personable?
65
From my vantage point, the one thing that Barack does really well, and all great speakers do, is he's very open.
66
He's very vulnerable.
67
And I want to play for you one of my favorite
68
clips from the entire interview where he shares one of the dreams he had while being in the White House.
69
And it's just not something that I would have expected from a president to share with the world, but take a listen.
70
I did have dreams where I wasn't present, and they were some of my happiest dreams, where I'd be walking down the street, and it was a nice day,
71
and I'd stop and get like, in a little bodega, I'd stop and get like a...
72
Egg and cheese.
73
...ice coffee or something, and I'd sit on a bench, and suddenly I realized nobody recognizes me.
74
And that's the only thing that happened in the dream.
75
I'd just be sitting there chill.
76
And I felt like I'd won the lottery.
77
I had no idea that one of his best dreams, his happiest dreams, was when he wasn't president and he wasn't recognized.
78
And that's just a level of getting to know somebody that I think makes us like them, makes us relate to them.
79
And there were moments throughout the interview, and I'll just show you a couple, where I felt like he did a really good job of just being real with us.
80
Look, I'm owning that completely.
81
I've always said that that is probably the worst mistake of my presidency.
82
Of course there are times where I feel depressed.
83
The bottom line is that he's unafraid to be vulnerable and in the age of authenticity that's really really important.
84
We see that in Bernay Brown, we see that in Simon Sinek, we see that in all great communicators and Barak shows us that even at the highest level,
85
the highest title you could have in the country, there's still an opportunity to share more of himself with the world.
86
But that brings us to the final point, point number four, which is so related and that's sense of humor.
87
If you watch the interview, there's so many times where Barack is really funny and it contrasts
88
so nicely from these more serious vulnerable moments to just moments of lightheartedness
89
and so I created a little compilation of my favorite bits that really showcase what type of person Barack Obama is.
90
Let's take a look.
91
I'm actually gonna lean on you to be my therapist a little bit.
92
Help me understand this.
93
Come on, I'm gonna help you.
94
So meet me here.
95
I'm here speaking on behalf of so many voters.
96
First of all, let me set my watch.
97
So that's part of the therapy process.
98
Right, right, right.
99
So, you know, tell your skeptical Indian uncles, Dude, come on, man.
100
The, uh, that's it.
101
I'd probably help Hasan get a job, you know?
102
If it hadn't been for another guy with a funny name, you know, Netflix isn't gonna carry him.
103
Do you have any questions for me in my body of work?
104
Not really.
105
I mean...
106
Copy that.
107
You know, um, maybe shoot a little higher.
108
We've seen this from Barack Obama before.
109
He's been on Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis.
110
That's an amazing video to watch.
111
But the point is that he's just a funny person.
112
That's part of his personality, and he's unafraid to show it.
113
And that's really the theme of this video, is that at the end of the day, I think what makes him so likable or perhaps just
114
so interesting to listen to is it feels like he is being himself.
115
There's so many moments where that happens in the video, and I think it comes down to authenticity.
116
The bottom line is that communication is a skill
117
and all of us can learn it and you already have what it takes.
118
If you're interested in improving your communication, there's a free ebook in the description about how to speak better under pressure and thrive in the moment.
119
And at the end of the day, bottom line, my summary prompt is this, you already have what it takes to be a great speaker.
120
So I hope you continue on that journey and I'm gonna see you in the next video.
121
So, thanks for watching.
