1
Hello.
2
Let's practice intermediate listening.
3
Listen first, then shadow along.
4
Welcome back to my Slow English Podcast.
5
If you want more of a challenge, then speed this video up to 1.25 or 1.5.
6
Today, I want to talk about a book that I've been reading about nature,
7
gratitude, and the way that we see the world.
8
And I think the relationship that we have with languages is pretty similar.
9
Sometimes we see English as another course,
10
another subscription, another thing we need to buy to become fluent in English.
11
But language isn't a product.
12
It's a relationship.
13
And I think the moment we start treating English as a relationship,
14
a relationship with people, with stories like mine,
15
with culture, with yourself, The moment we start treating language like a relationship, everything changes.
16
So today, while you practice your listening with me or shadowing,
17
whichever one you prefer, I also want you to think about the relationship you have with the world around you.
18
So this book really changed my perspective.
19
It changed the way I see the world.
20
It changed how I treat the world.
21
And I want to share it with you.
22
So, when something is given to us,
23
we, to a certain degree, feel responsible for it.
24
We feel a relationship with it.
25
We take better care of it.
26
if it's given to us.
27
Different from when we buy something.
28
I don't think we cherish things as much when we buy them ourselves.
29
Once something becomes a commodity,
30
something we can buy, we stop feeling any responsibility,
31
gratitude, or relationship toward it.
32
Like when you buy a pair of socks, you will definitely wear them.
33
You will definitely appreciate them for what they are,
34
socks that keep your feet warm.
35
But now, let's say your grandma knits a pair of socks for you.
36
She gives them to you for your birthday.
37
You'll probably take much better care of those socks, right?
38
Maybe even wear them when you go to see your grandma to show your appreciation.
39
You show responsibility, gratitude, and you have a relationship with them.
40
If you lose the pair of socks that you bought for yourself,
41
I don't think I would lose any sleep over it.
42
But if I lost my grandma's handmade socks that she made thinking of me for my birthday,
43
of course I'm going to feel sad.
44
But like I said, I wouldn't lose any sleep over the ones that I bought.
45
I think this is a really interesting way to look at the world,
46
to look at the food we eat, for example, the beaches we lay on,
47
the forests we walk through.
48
They are all gifts.
49
Can you imagine feeling like you received a gift every day?
50
Every time you eat?
51
Every time you see the beautiful trees outside?
52
Every time you lay on the grass or on the sand at the beach,
53
can you imagine how happy you would be all the time in the book?
54
she mentions the gift economy where you can't just pay for something.
55
You can't pay your grape tree to grow grapes.
56
you can plant its seed water it
57
and take care of your grape tree
58
and how will it repay you by giving you sweet
59
juicy grapes in the spring you can't pay to enjoy laying on the beach You can enjoy the beauty of it.
60
You can pick up after yourself.
61
You can leave the beach looking cleaner than it did when you arrived.
62
And the same thing goes for our forests,
63
our parks, our lakes, our oceans, our trees, our animals.
64
We are all nature.
65
That's the point of this book.
66
to help you understand that by not taking care of nature,
67
it's like not taking care of yourself.
68
When we look at the world as a gift,
69
it changes the way we treat the world,
70
how we respect it and feel gratitude towards it every day.
71
And I believe that when you do,
72
you'll see more gifts pouring into your life day by day.
73
Try it out and see.
74
I also think that learning English is similar.
75
When you force yourself to study,
76
you lose the joy in it when you build a relationship with language through conversations,
77
music, podcasts, books, friends, stories like these,
78
and moments from real life.
79
Then you'll see real change, real progress.
80
Just think about how amazing it feels to receive a gift,
81
to be thought of, to be loved by someone.
82
I have a list of my favorite gifts that I remember to this day.
83
flowers from my grandma, letters from my sister,
84
drawings from my brother, a stuffed animal from my cousin,
85
and a video from my best friend.
86
What's the most thoughtful gift you've ever received.
87
Now, think of the feeling you had when you received it.
88
It's pretty special, right?
89
Now, imagine feeling that every day when you're walking outside
90
and looking at all the gifts that you've been given today just try
91
and think of one
92
that you have right now with you for me it's my orange juice it's in the effort
93
that it took me and the person making my juice it's in the bowl of oats
94
that I can't show you anymore because I already finished it.
95
But it's in the time and patience it took me to get just the right consistency that I like.
96
It's in the delicate slices of banana I cut.
97
It's in the honey that I had to patiently wait to drizzle all over my oats.
98
The patience that was actually eternal at that moment because I was so hungry,
99
But I took the time anyway, and it's in the way that I'm sharing this with you right now.
100
Nothing is a waste when it's appreciated.
101
I would also like to mention that it's not completely our fault that we don't see life as a gift.
102
How could we when all we see is the food stacked up on shelves in the grocery store?
103
That's probably costing us more than it should,
104
therefore stressing us out more than it is helping us or making us feel grateful.
105
we only see the private beaches
106
that charge us stupid amounts just to lay on the sand
107
and swim in the ocean something that was already there they didn't build that create that
108
it was already there.
109
Why should we have to pay for it?
110
Because when we have to pay for something,
111
I feel like we think our debt is paid.
112
We owe nothing else and we can just do as we please,
113
whatever we want, leaving our trash and therefore hurting the animals
114
that rely on us just as much as we rely on them,
115
contaminating our oceans and forgetting the relationship that we have with nature.
116
All respect is lost, but there is hope.
117
I believe in hope, and I believe that nature is very forgiving.
118
Nature doesn't hold a grudge.
119
If we start now, We could bring so much love into the world
120
if we give without the expectation of receiving anything in return
121
and create a relationship with the world.
122
The same with language.
123
Real progress happens when we start asking ourselves,
124
how can I create a relationship with this language?
125
because relationships grow through consistency,
126
care, attention, and presence, just like nature.
127
Guys, I could say so much more, but I think I'm going to leave it there for now.
128
I hope you learned something new today while you were studying English with me.
129
If you want to read this book with me, you're still on time.
130
It's called Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
131
I'm only on the first chapter, so if you start reading now,
132
you'll probably catch up with me because it takes me an eternity to finish a book.
133
If you liked this video, be sure to like it because if we get to 10,000 likes,
134
I'll do a part two.
135
Also subscribe for more English practice with me.
136
Never stop growing, guys.
137
It's truly never too late to start giving,
138
to start spreading your love to the people and world around you.
139
Let's take care of the world as we would take care of our grandma's handmade socks.
140
See you next week.
141
Bye.
142
you

(How are you doing?)
(Can I help you?)

  3. 세 번째 단계: Shadowing(쉐도잉)을 시작합니다.
