1
Do you want to break into UX design but can't afford going to schools?
2
I'll show you how you can do it in just six steps.
3
A little bit about myself.
4
I'm currently a senior product designer at Lyft.
5
And before here, I've been at a couple of other companies like Big Bank or Fintech Unicorn Startup or sometimes B2B companies.
6
And to be fair, I did go to schools related to UX design.
7
When I was in Korea,
8
I double majored in visual design.
9
When I moved to Canada, I studied multimedia design.
10
But honestly, looking back, I think my career would have looked the same even if I didn't go to these schools.
11
Because UX design is something you learn a lot from the experience when you're working,
12
rather than listening to lectures or sitting in classes.
13
So in this video today,
14
I'll be giving you a step-by-step guidance on how I would restart my career in UX design in 2025.
15
And I'll be sharing a lot of resources I handpicked based on my expertise in this industry.
16
So let's get it started.
17
So step one, let's start from building your foundational knowledge.
18
These are the books I would recommend.
19
O'Reilly makes a lot of great books related to UX,
20
and most of these books are surprisingly pretty short.
21
So go to the bookstore,
22
buy these books, and you're going to pick up core UX principles with clear examples really quickly.
23
And honestly, these books saved me from a lot of difficult interview questions,
24
so I highly recommend them.
25
So let's go to step two.
26
The second step is about learning from portfolios.
27
There are a lot of websites that create top portfolios from UX designers or product designers.
28
So my recommendation is go to those websites and check out at least a thousand portfolios.
29
I said that a thousand.
30
It sounds a lot, but you're going to learn so much from it.
31
At first, you're going to look at a portfolio and you will think like,
32
okay, everything looks cool.
33
But then as you look into more and more,
34
you're going to start building your taste.
35
You'll start noticing what you think stands out versus what are the areas that fall short on on certain portfolios.
36
That's how you build your skills in building and evaluating portfolios.
37
Collect the link and analyze what makes you think it's good versus bad.
38
Everything you write down here will feed into the portfolio you will be building.
39
Now step three, build your projects.
40
It's time to build your own case study.
41
The type of project you will have to focus on is passion project.
42
Let's say while you're using DoorDash app,
43
even though you don't work there,
44
you'll notice some UX problems.
45
So from that problem definition,
46
you can start your own UX design project.
47
You can do your own research such as talking to some DoorDash drivers,
48
business owners that work with DoorDash,
49
or other users that order food from DoorDash.
50
And by doing so, you could show how you think,
51
how you apply your UX principles,
52
how you run a design project,
53
and how you eventually solve a problem.
54
You really can choose any mobile apps or web products that you use in your day-to-day life.
55
So how many projects do you need to start up?
56
I always say quality over quantity.
57
So sweet spot is having three projects on your case study,
58
something is really really high quality.
59
So the reason this works from hiring managers perspective is
60
because they want to see if you can deliver high quality work repeatedly
61
so three projects in high quality is enough to prove this anything beyond
62
that is good to have
63
but hiring managers will not check it out anyway one bonus
64
thing before you go to step four working on your ui
65
so ui skill i think is something you can really quickly
66
pick up by looking into a lot of products with intention to learn what makes it look good
67
but you just have to practice how to make it
68
so what i recommend is doing something called UI challenge for 100 days.
69
I did it when I was a student and I found it really helpful.
70
So what this website does is it gives you a prompt
71
every day to work on different UI in a limited amount of time.
72
So when you do it,
73
you're forced to design something which makes you look into a lot of UI examples and apply what you learned there.
74
And when you practice it for a hundred days in a row,
75
you will gain UI skills to build strong portfolio cases.
76
So now let's go to step four,
77
which is about building your portfolio.
78
Framer, Webflow, Wix are the most commonly used tools these days,
79
and I personally use Framer to build my current portfolio website.
80
It's really easy to use.
81
You can build a lot of things without having to code.
82
If you're feeling overwhelmed to start from the blank space,
83
on their website, they'll give you a lot of templates you could start from.
84
Step five, get your portfolio reviewed.
85
So you have been building this portfolio based on your perspective and your research.
86
Now it's time to plug in someone else's perspective
87
and this is where mentorship comes in two websites i recommended
88
and i have used are adp list
89
and mentor crews i was a mentor at mentor crews actually
90
but i don't provide mentorship anymore but you're going to find a lot of mentors
91
that you could learn from adp list is free
92
but mentor crews is paid i find paid mentorship really worth it
93
so let's think about this from capitalism perspective you are their clients
94
which means that these mentors will put a lot of effort into reviewing your portfolio to make sure
95
that you will land the job through this portfolio.
96
And I'm saying this from my honest experience.
97
So if you want to improve your portfolio,
98
resume or interview skills in a short amount of time really efficiently,
99
I highly recommend paid mentorship.
100
It could get expensive, honestly,
101
but treat it as investment.
102
Once you land a role in UX design,
103
you're going to make way more money than that.
104
Finally, last step, it's about building your network and contributing to a community.
105
I made a short video about LinkedIn networking before and you can pick up all my tips on that.
106
And a spoiler, I'm going to make more long-form videos on how to build and grow your LinkedIn network.
107
And on top of this,
108
networking is not just about your LinkedIn.
109
There's so many Slack communities out there you could join.
110
These three are the ones I used to be part of and learn so much from it.
111
You could go there to connect with people or sometimes like ask for help.
112
For example drop your portfolio link
113
and ask for some advice on how you could improve it
114
so many people there will be willing to help you out the beauty of this community is
115
that you're going to learn from not only getting help
116
but also when you're giving help let's say somebody asks you to review their portfolio
117
when you're reviewing it you're going to think about all the
118
learnings you got from a lot of portfolios you have checked out
119
or other ux principles that you have learned about and
120
when you're sharing your advice you're practicing on how to do a really great design critique.
121
So being in these design communities have a lot of benefits
122
so make sure you're going to be part of them and contribute to it.
123
So that's it!
124
Hope that gave you some clear ideas on where to start and where you should go next.
125
I know UX design job market these days sucks
126
and I honestly don't think it's going to get any better but also that does not mean that it's impossible.
127
You just have to put the right effort and keep it going
128
and I'm here to help you understand what type of effort you will have to put into it.
129
And officially this is making my first long form YouTube video.
130
If you want me to cover specific topics,
131
drop the ideas in the comments.
132
I'll definitely check them out.
133
And likes, comments, and subscribes will help this video reach the right audience just like you.
134
Okay, I'll see you in my next video.
135
Bye, see you then.
