Part 1.
2
You will hear a customer asking a travel agent for information about some trips.
3
Good afternoon.
4
Good afternoon, Atlanta Travel Agency.
5
May I help you?
6
I saw your advert in the newspaper this morning
7
and decided to come over for more detailed information about some trips that you currently offer.
8
What kind of trips do you have in mind?
9
Well, I enjoy surfing very much and want to get tanned,
10
but all my friends suggest either mountain climbing or biking.
11
We currently offer all the three types.
12
Even though biking is the most popular type of holiday,
13
it doesn't work for everyone.
14
I think you should follow your heart.
15
Right.
16
What are my options for accommodation then?
17
For this type of holiday,
18
you can choose to stay in a hotel or a self-catering apartment.
19
Can you introduce the hotel package first?
20
Sure.
21
Price for our hotel package is quite reasonable compared with that of your own reservation.
22
What does the price include?
23
It covers the beachside hotel and free breakfast.
24
Good.
25
Does the hotel have any recreational facilities?
26
Oh, rest assured, the hotel is fully equipped with a pool,
27
a nightclub and a gym.
28
Guests can enjoy a vibrant nightlife during their stay at the hotel.
29
Five-star ratings are common for the hotel's satisfying service.
30
So how much does it cost?
31
Well, it was originally €360 for an adult,
32
but we are now offering a Labor Day promotion.
33
You can get a discount of 12.5%.
34
So that's €315 for now.
35
A really good deal.
36
Right.
37
What about the self-catering apartment?
38
Oh, that'll be even cheaper.
39
But you have to stay in a shared room with other guests.
40
Each room has six bunk beds with lockers.
41
OK.
42
I think the hotel is much better.
43
Getting a good night's sleep is critical for a relaxing holiday.
44
I can't stand sharing a room with someone who snores all night long.
45
Can't agree more.
46
What about the surfing equipment rental?
47
I don't want to bring my own surfboard.
48
You can hire a surfboard by the hour, day or week.
49
Just book it in advance and it will be delivered to the hotel or even directly to the beach.
50
How much does it cost?
51
It costs 15 euros for a day,
52
but for a week's rental it's just 75 euros.
53
The surf station also provides surf lessons if you're interested.
54
That's good to know.
55
Oh, there's one more thing you should know.
56
Just in case of an accident during your trip,
57
we recommend each customer to have the correct travel cover in place before leaving home.
58
Please, tell me about it.
59
Well, we mainly offer two types of insurance.
60
The first one is basic coverage.
61
It costs 30 euros.
62
What does it include?
63
It covers medical treatment during your trip and things like missing your flight,
64
flight delays and cancellations.
65
But, you know, extreme sports can be quite dangerous and therefore injuries during these activities are excluded.
66
Then how about the other one?
67
The second one is called Premier Cover.
68
It is more expensive at €42.50,
69
but we highly recommend this one for regular surfers.
70
If you receive an injury or hurt anyone else while participating in extreme sports like surfing,
71
you are fully covered.
72
I see.
73
I think I'll go with the Premier Cover.
74
When your flight gets in,
75
there will be a minivan to pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel,
76
but you'll have to get to London Airport yourself.
77
It's alright, I'll just take the airport shuttle.
78
Actually, I personally suggest you take a taxi.
79
It's much cheaper than other types of transport, including the airport shuttle.
80
Thanks for the tip.
81
I think I'll book a trip for next weekend.
82
Okay, how would you like to pay?
83
Do you accept credit cards?
84
Yes, we do, but there will be a slight charge on that.
85
If you pay by cheque, there's no extra fee.
86
Great, I'll write you a cheque then.
87
Part 2.
88
You will hear a member of staff called Mary Linden giving some information about their community centre.
89
On behalf of our community centre,
90
I'd like to welcome you all here today.
91
My name is Mary Linden.
92
As you can see here,
93
this multi-purpose hall is a great venue for various events,
94
including banquets, seminars or dances.
95
The centre provides services for all ages.
96
As the majority of you have already signed up for our dance workshops,
97
I'll introduce relevant information first before we start the tour and get ourselves oriented.
98
Okay, now when participants check in for their first dancing session,
99
they will be given a class list printed with available seasonal classes,
100
ranging from Zumba to Ballet,
101
as well as detailed descriptions and schedules.
102
The dance studio will also give you a complimentary shoe bag to store your dance shoes.
103
Every week will be a surprise in cardio movement.
104
Our fitness professional will guide you through an upbeat, heart-pumping, lively dance class.
105
Therefore, it is highly advised to bring a face towel and a water bottle with you.
106
As things get mixed up easily,
107
you might also want to attach a name tag to your belongings.
108
It will be sent to you by mail in advance.
109
Now, let us get a closer look at our dance workshops and its curriculum.
110
There is a list of activities to participate during and after each session.
111
You'll have the chance to make your own costume,
112
but it won't be held until tomorrow.
113
You can also practice dance with music whenever the studio is available.
114
In the first afternoon
115
and evening of your dance class there will be an introduction
116
to the development of dance for the past few decades then
117
we'll warm up with an informal dance i know you don't have much experience in dancing
118
but we'll get there soon rest assured there won't be a dance test until the end of the course
119
okay now a word about the layout of the center our beautiful facility has 25 rooms all together
120
which are both very functional and aesthetically pleasing
121
We're standing here right at the entrance To your left you
122
can see two rooms in a row After each dance session you're probably soaking in sweat
123
and in desperate need of a shower Just go straight ahead,
124
turn left and the shower room is on your left hand side
125
If you just want to take a nap there is a
126
six bed bunk room It's immediately to the left of where you are standing right before the shower room.
127
We also have a games room with dartboards,
128
table tennis, pool and card games.
129
It is a good place to have fun with friends.
130
Just take the first right.
131
It is the second area to your right.
132
You can explore it well later during our tour.
133
Further ahead in the corner there are the bike racks.
134
You can either park your bike here or hire one if you want a ride.
135
The first hour is free.
136
Part of our dance sessions will take place in the music room.
137
It has a large mirror with various musical instruments and state-of-the-art stereos.
138
If you want to get there,
139
just go straight, take the second right,
140
and it's the second area to your left.
141
Our friendly reception team is an invaluable resource for any visitor to the centre.
142
If your mobile phone needs charging,
143
we have several adapters and can easily get your phone back up and running again.
144
We also offer a range of chargeable services,
145
including photocopy, scanning and faxing.
146
The reception is located in the centre to the south of the music room.
147
There is a medical centre providing a full spectrum of care and treatment,
148
especially for sports injuries like a sprained knee.
149
It's right opposite the reception to the left of the music room.
150
Now, I have to tell you about our gym,
151
where some of our dance sessions take place.
152
It is also equipped with the latest equipment,
153
including exercise bikes, treadmills, rowing machines,
154
etc. If you walk straight ahead before you come to the end and turn right,
155
it's the second room to your left.
156
And speaking of food, if you ever feel hungry,
157
you can either cook in the kitchen or grab a snack at the store.
158
To reach it, keep straight on until you get to the third passageway,
159
turn right, and it's the one after the gym
160
and the kitchen sits right next to the gym on the same side of the passageway.
161
It has all the utensils you'll need,
162
spatulas, frying pans, ladles and plates.
163
You name it, just feel free to use it.
164
By the way, if you have coats,
165
umbrellas or any large bags with you, the cloakroom is available.
166
It's the room in the top right corner on the far side.
167
Right, well, if you're ready,
168
we'll start the tour of our lovely community centre.
169
Part 3.
170
You will hear a student called Karen discussing her assignment with her course tutor.
171
Oh, Karen, hi.
172
Come in, take a seat.
173
I wanted to talk to you about this assignment you've handed in.
174
I'll give it back to you with detailed feedback,
175
but first there are a few things I'd like to run over,
176
you know, pointers for next time.
177
When you hand in your next assignment,
178
can you ensure that you've gone through these aspects?
179
Um, sure, will do.
180
Now, the first thing is your literature review.
181
It was not sufficient enough,
182
so I would like to see your book reports to get your complete view.
183
So can you submit those with your next assignment?
184
Then I can find out which parts you've chosen to leave out.
185
Oh yes, sorry, I didn't realise you needed them.
186
It did cross my mind that what I've handed in is a bit thin,
187
but then I started to work on another project and forgot to revise it.
188
That's alright, and I've found some errors,
189
just small ones where you had quoted people but not recorded the information properly at the end.
190
Don't forget to go through and make sure that your references are accurate.
191
They were very relevant though.
192
Just check and revise them using the format sample that I've emailed you beforehand, okay?
193
Yes, I'll remember to check them.
194
Now, you've made some good points,
195
but it might be helpful if you could include a few other examples,
196
just to drive your point home.
197
Don't start writing more paragraphs,
198
just slot them in at the end of what you've already written.
199
Now, the thing you have to do,
200
if you really want to get a better mark,
201
is expand the ideas you're presenting.
202
Then your argument becomes more valid.
203
Okay.
204
Hmm.
205
Can I talk to you about the presentation I've got to do?
206
Sure, of course.
207
When shall I stage what we've studied?
208
Am I doing it next term?
209
I can't remember what we said.
210
Well, the thing is, Marco couldn't do it,
211
so you agreed to do it at the next seminar.
212
So how can I help?
213
Actually, I'm wondering what you suggest to be the key part of the presentation.
214
I mean, which part should I spend most of my time on?
215
That's a question to the point.
216
Well, you have very little time really,
217
so it's absolutely essential for you to explain the experiment.
218
Of course, you'll have a summary in the handouts you give out,
219
but you can still start the presentation with that.
220
It's optional though.
221
And do I have to give you the abstract first,
222
or shall I just email it to all the students?
223
Err, no, I do need to see it first and see if it needs to be polished up,
224
and then we'll get some printouts done.
225
Now, they'll need to be done by the 3rd of December,
226
so I'll need to see it by the 26th of November, if that's okay.
227
Yes, fine.
228
Oh, and I need to talk to you about where the presentation is going to be made.
229
Given the actual number of participants and audience,
230
we've had problems with the rooms because we'll need something bigger than usual.
231
In our faculty, the only room available is the computer room,
232
which is far from suitable considering the layout of the room
233
so we'll have to go across the road and do it in the chemistry lab.
234
It's big enough to accommodate everyone and is equipped with the proper overhead projector in there as well.
235
Okay, right.
236
And I get a grade for this, don't I?
237
Yes, your first one was graded by your tutor,
238
but this one will be scored by the professor.
239
But relax, the criteria will be consistent and you'll get an unbiased result.
240
Oh, and I've sorted out my modules for next year.
241
You asked me to tell you about my choices.
242
Yes.
243
What have you decided?
244
Oh, it was really hard to determine.
245
Um, I've already done the data collection once,
246
so that wasn't really a choice.
247
I couldn't make up my mind between language and society and communication skills.
248
I read the syllabuses, but they sound more or less the same to me.
249
Anyway, I went for communication skills in the end,
250
because I know the lecturer.
251
Actually, social interaction seems to cover much the same ground,
252
so I didn't bother with that either.
253
Erm, I thought discourse analysis looked really interesting.
254
It studies and analyses the text beyond the literal meaning of the sentences.
255
It looks into the connotation beyond the sentences.
256
And in fact, it also covers a little bit of research methodology in it.
257
So, I thought I'd do that rather than the full methodology course.
258
Kill two birds with one stone, as it were.
259
And then, I fancied something drastically different.
260
So, I thought psycholinguistics would be interesting,
261
unless you think it'll be more worthwhile for me to do the phonology course.
262
No, I think you've made sensible choices.
263
I'm glad you're organised.
264
OK, let's meet again in a couple of weeks to see how you're getting on.
265
OK, thank you.
266
See you then.
267
Good afternoon.
268
This is the third session of the series of lectures on wildlife.
269
For this lecture, we're going to look at two studies on the habitats of birds and protection measures taken in Australia,
270
including the basic methodology and related areas of research.
271
Now, let me give you some background information about the first research project on birds.
272
The study was carried out by R.B.
273
Cunningham and his team from the Australian National University in 1995.
274
The primary goal was to detect the breeding habits and resting sites of some birds,
275
especially those protected species in urban regions.
276
These species included birds like peregrine falcons and kestrels in Australia.
277
The bird dataset consisted of a total of 153 species,
278
recorded from 946 sites.
279
One might expect that in order to obtain valid data on their distribution patterns and population densities,
280
researchers had to count through binoculars.
281
Instead, they managed to estimate with various standard distance sampling methods like random sampling.
282
In addition, a mapping system was used to study their companionship behaviour.
283
It recorded proposed birds' nesting sites to monitor the mating behaviour of targeted species.
284
To obtain valid data of birds' whereabouts,
285
researchers attached identity tags to birds' legs, transmitting radio signals.
286
The tagging process was done when the birds were between five and seven days of age.
287
After the initial tagging, data was collected from subsets of radio-tagged birds,
288
making it possible to assess the trends of birds over 15 months.
289
So, what did they find?
290
Well, as it turned out,
291
many of the birds tagged had the tendency to nest in the same habitat where they grew up.
292
Their nesting sites were quite varied and included freshwater reed beds,
293
tidal reed beds, agricultural crops, and man-made sites.
294
Even though naturally occurring nests were common,
295
birds sometimes accidentally nested in man-made devices like power towers, chimneys and tunnels.
296
This research also studied the impact of humans on bird communities
297
and found out that pollution had contributed greatly to the declining birth rates of some species,
298
which were considered to be extinct or threatened to vanish from the study area.
299
These species are dependent on natural forests because of their breeding holes.
300
They will become extinct when local natural forests continue to be polluted heavily.
301
A number of measures were thus taken by members from local animal conservation organizations to boost their alarming survival rates.
302
Firstly, breeding boxes were placed in trees taking on the role of breeding holes that were contaminated.
303
Protection guidelines were also introduced strictly prohibiting killing, disturbance and habitat destruction.
304
A further measure was taken to ensure the safety of birds from wind farms.
305
In fact, birds are sometimes shedded by wind turbine blades.
306
A great deal of work was done on how to prevent them from colliding with turbines.
307
A case in point was protecting space for bird migration by ensuring that migratory routes were kept free.
308
Falcons generally cope well with wind turbines,
309
but not in weather conditions where visibility is bad.
310
So, with knowledge of how fast falcons fly,
311
bird stations in northern Australia can notify wind farms further south of the falcons approach
312
so that turbines can be shut down as they pass by.
313
Then, another piece of research was done a couple of years later by Conway in 2006.
314
His team detected the calling frequency of seabirds flying at night.
315
Automatic signals are important communication tools for birds.
316
These signals can indicate social cohesion,
317
prey location and breeding behaviour.
318
Courtship songs are common among various species during mating seasons.
319
Males produce calling songs that attract distant females,
320
and then courtship songs will induce nearby females to respond.
321
Surveyors also took recordings of the sounds of all the individual birds detected.
322
A tablet PC was used to process detailed information like sound pitch,
323
spectrum, length and timing of surveys.
324
To minimize the disturbance on the bird community,
325
all the sounds were recorded from a distance using microphones to detect noise.
326
They found that the probability of call events was much higher for solitary birds communicating early and late in the day.
327
Further analyses indicated that during foraging,
328
the frequency of calls was significantly greater for birds encountering schooling fish,
329
and birds called sooner after a catch in these foraging scenarios,
330
compared with when only single fish were encountered.
331
The results of this study showed
332
that increased calling activity in the presence of more profitable prey could be of crucial importance to seabirds
333
that benefit from group foraging.
334
Thank you.

  • “May I help you?”
  • “What kind of trips do you have in mind?” -
  • “Can you introduce the hotel package first?”
  • “What does the price include?” -
  • “How much does it cost?” -
