A routine three -hour flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into hours of terror
2
and for 174 passengers the journey home ended only late last night at Ben -Gurion airport.
3
Among them were 27 children and the Israelis who helped fight their way into the cockpit
4
and stop what could have become a mass casualty disaster.
5
ILTV's Steve Liebowitz reports.
6
It could have been another 9 -11, instead a miraculous escape from death, all thanks to an Indian pilot and four brave Israeli men.
7
As fears of a possible hijacking gripped a Tel Aviv -bound Fly Dubai flight,
8
they sprang into action and saved the 174 passengers and crew on board.
9
Yaniv Hayoun, Tzfika Manis and Asaf Rajwan heard the screams and rushed to the cockpit.
10
Captain Smit Macha, an Indian pilot, was brutally stabbed by his Omani co -pilot, yet he managed to open the door.
11
The three Israelis stormed in, strangled the aggressor with a headphones cord and took control of the plunging plane.
12
Yaniv, a plumber with no knowledge of how to pilot a plane, managed to pull back the rudder until the reserve pilots on board took over.
13
I started to go to the cockpit, and then there was a lot of fun with the air at the bottom.
14
Something that I gave to me, where the soldiers are located, in front of the cockpit.
15
I took the cockpit, and I was going to move on to the cockpit, and I was going to move on to the cockpit, and then I was going to move on to the cockpit,
16
and then I was going to move on to the cockpit.
17
I started to move on and then...
18
Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes I'm going to see you next time.
19
I'm going to see you next time.
20
And then he started to get a little bit.
21
And then he told me that he was going to take a shot from here.
22
That's amazing.
23
It was still 9 -11.
24
It was.
25
It was.
26
It was one of my goals.
27
It was one of my goals.
28
It was one of my goals.
29
The fourth Israeli, Shota Musayev, rushed to Captain Smith, who was severely wounded and bleeding.
30
A dentist from Petah Tikva, Shota managed to stop the bleeding, saving the pilot's life.
31
President Herzog said he will recommend that these brave Israelis and the Indian pilot receive the presidential award for civilian heroism.
32
And earlier I spoke with Almog Italy, a passenger who was on that Fly Dubai flight.
33
Take a listen.
34
I am so glad to see you safe and sound here at home in Israel.
35
And I would like to ask you a little bit about what happened over there.
36
Can you take us back to the beginning?
37
When did you first realize that something was terribly wrong?
38
Well, we were on a connection coming from Tokyo to Tel Aviv where we had a connection in Dubai,
39
and the first two hours of the flight went very smooth, no unusual elements or anything to suspect.
40
And then suddenly when we arrived over the Jordanian border,
41
suddenly the airplane started to fall down, to dive, literally dive, like for 30 seconds.
42
And we thought we hit the turbulence, that it was way too fast.
43
And it's like a roller coaster, up and down.
44
And we didn't have any alert, so we had to back it up.
45
And I was worried because I had two of my children next to me and my wife.
46
And then it bounced, and then it started again falling down.
47
So it was like a very, very crazy time and after the second fall, it balanced again and we saw people,
48
passengers running towards the cockpit and we understood
49
that there is something going on in the cockpit
50
and it took another three or four minutes to get someone to inform us that it was attacked in the cockpit.
51
One pilot stopped the other one
52
but the passenger along with the crew members managed to take over the cockpit
53
and now there is a pilot who is handling the flight and that we are looking for the nearest airport to land.
54
That sounds like a horror story and I'm sorry you had to go through that.
55
What did you actually see and hear from where you were sitting?
56
Do you remember, do you recall where you were sitting on the plane?
57
Yeah, I was sitting in row 20.
58
It's like just above the wing.
59
So we saw the wing strangling to balance.
60
It's like a bird because the aircraft, as far as I know, has automatically a mechanism to balance when it falls down like that.
61
And we saw that the wing, the wing just fighting the head, the stiff falling.
62
And it was crazy.
63
Yeah.
64
wow and was there any warning from the crew or did everything just happen very suddenly
65
were they informing you no it it it happened very suddenly
66
and basically after after it started the crew didn't function they didn't know what to do they were shocked
67
so we had to take over the the flight
68
so some brave passengers on board can you tell me um
69
when when you saw when you understood that this is more than just technical issues or the regular,
70
perhaps, weather disturbances.
71
When you understood that, what was your initial instinct?
72
I know that in a situation like that, when it's uncertain and you have to remain seated, you have to be calm,
73
to relax, and to tell you the truth, there wasn't any panic.
74
So this is what helped us and saved our life.
75
So people stayed in the seats, didn't shout, waiting for information, didn't run into the cockpit.
76
And yeah, this is exactly what saved their lives.
77
Everyone for discipline.
78
And how did you, you mentioned you have children.
79
How do you explain this to children?
80
They must be traumatized by this.
81
My children, I would say, are regular for extreme.
82
We just came back from Osaka, U .S for rollercoaster.
83
So I said to them, this is an extension of the rollercoaster.
84
Of course, they were afraid, but when they see their parents, they are calm and relaxed, it immediately affects them.
85
So they stayed in their place and just waited for them.
86
And now they certainly have a story to tell all of their friends.
87
Thankfully, it all ended.
88
Yeah, my daughter told me that it has been 24 hours that we were in four countries,
89
like Japan, Dubai, the U .A and Saudi Arabia and Israel.
90
People all over the world are now saying how courageous the Israelis are
91
and how they immediately got up to resolve the issue, to take over, to basically save the day.
92
Do you feel proud to be part of this, of these people?
93
I think that we have a very, very big hero from India, Captain Smith, who managed to open the lock door.
94
And by doing that, three or four passengers ran into the cockpit and took over.
95
Of course, they are very, very brave.
96
And they saved our lives.
97
They literally saved our lives.
98
Today, the wounded captain is being hailed as a hero.
99
While the Omani co -pilot remains in custody in Saudi Arabia as authorities investigate his motivation.
100
Questions have been raised regarding how an Omani pilot was allowed on a flight to Israel to begin with.
101
UAE authorities are probing his motives and whether the attack was pre -planned.
102
Israel is hailing Captain Smeet Matcha as a hero.
103
He is currently in stable condition, receiving medical attention in Tabuk,
104
Saudi Arabia, where the fateful Fly Dubai flight was diverted after his Omani co -pilot attacked him.
105
Masha was covered in blood on the floor
106
when he managed to draw the last moments of his energy to open the cockpit door.
107
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Captain Smith for his extraordinary bravery.
108
I think what happened is a tremendous act of heroism that prevented another 9 -11 -style crash of an entire airplane.
109
Before joining Fly Dubai in 2022, Maja worked with Indian Airlines Space Jet for over a decade.
110
He's being praised not only by Prime Minister Netanyahu, but also by President Trump and, of course, Indian Prime Minister Modi.
111
The pilot was in very bad shape, and I guess he still is in very bad shape, but he had the sense to,
112
amazing, to, in a way he was a hero, to open the door.
113
You know, those doors are solid steel, you can't get them open from outside.
114
He was able to fall back and get the door open and scream.
115
far less is known of the other pilot in the cockpit
116
in omani national u .s president donald trump calls the attacker quote a terrorist
117
or perhaps a whack job
118
while investigation is still underway to determine a motive the omani
119
attacker had reportedly worked with fly dubai for less than a
120
year now arrested he is under investigation by saudi authorities a
121
fellow pilot has described the suspect as a religious extremist claiming he prayed excessively and refused to shake hands with women.
122
But those claims have not been established as the motive for the attack.
123
Defense Minister Katz calls the assault, quote, an attempted jihadist terrorist attack.
124
Prime Minister Netanyahu said it was too early to know.
125
Well, it's too early to say the attacking pilot is being now,
126
is now being investigated in, in Saudi Arabia.
127
I think he'll be taken to the emirates where he comes from
128
or at least where he left where he flew off from
129
and we'll be following and possibly also participating in this investigation
130
so we'll find out the uae has opened an investigation into whether the attack had a terror motive
131
or was pre -planned one thing is clear
132
if it wasn't for the bravery of captain masha that day could have ended in a tragedy.
133
And joining us now is ILTV's Devo Klein.
134
Devo, the UAE opened an investigation into the possible motives of the Omani pilot.
135
What more can you tell us?
136
That's right, Sivan.
137
The announcement came this morning with the United Arab Emirates state news agency saying
138
that they've opened an investigation into the circumstances to figure out if a motive, as you rightfully reported.
139
Now, the agency further stressed that despite the fact
140
that the attack did not happen on uae grounds it was
141
actually up in the air the uae fly dubai agency the
142
uh aircraft belonging to the airline is actually registered in the gulf country
143
and it actually flies under its national flag
144
so the uae uh judicial authorities are going to be very very busy investigating
145
and we'll wait for the updates
146
but they're not the only ones we've heard the prime minister there say
147
that the saudis are also investigating uh the co -pilot as he is still in saudi arabia
148
and we know that there is minor involvement with the united states
149
and we are yet to see just how involved israel is with this investigation
150
but right now israel's shin bet
151
and security officials are working on a slightly different operation you may recall
152
and our guests may recall that after this horrible incident from yesterday
153
that could have ended in a tragedy
154
but ended up being rather a miracle the fly dubai flights
155
have all been canceled the airline will not be flying anymore to Israel, to Tel Aviv, which means
156
that thousands of Israeli passengers who were holding tickets for Fly Dubai planes are now essentially stranded in the United Arab Emirates.
157
So there is a massive operation now to retrieve those passengers, to bring them home safely in cooperation with El Al.
158
Multiple flights have been dispatched and there's an ongoing operation just to bring everybody home back to Israel where they belong.
159
Thank you very much, Davo.
160
The prophet spoke of a land rebuilt.
161
Today, that miracle is a global economic powerhouse.

170
Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iran's foreign minister and his delegation to leave New York earlier than planned, according to two American officials.
171
Abbas Arashi has remained in the city after the UN General Assembly, hoping to advance in direct talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz,
172
ending the war and reviving nuclear negotiations.
173
But after weekend meetings with Qatari mediators produced little progress, Rubio reportedly decided the Iranians had overstayed their welcome.
174
Arashi's team departed early Tuesday.
175
Iran denies it was ordered to leave, insisting the delegation departed according to a schedule provided to Washington in advance.
176
And joining me now to discuss these latest events is Professor Chuck Freilich, former Deputy National Security Advisor.
177
Hi, Chuck.
178
Hi.
179
Thanks for having me.
180
So, Chuck, let's start with the most basic question.
181
How could something like this happen, this whole fiasco with the Fly Dubai flight?
182
I'm not sure that there was a major security breach here.
183
Clearly, there was some loophole in the procedures that will have to be addressed.
184
But when you have an individual, either a lunatic or a committed Islamist terrorist,
185
who wants to bring an aircraft down and he's the pilot or the co -pilot, it's very hard to prevent it.
186
There is some procedure.
187
I don't know how this guy got by.
188
We'll see what's done in the future to prevent it.
189
I guess the question of the day is whether Iran was involved, something that's on everybody's mind.
190
Prime Minister Netanyahu says it's too early to determine whether they were.
191
What are your thoughts on this?
192
Yeah, well, I agree with him on this one.
193
First of all, it's too early to tell.
194
And we do have to try and find out if the Iranians were involved.
195
We know that this is a period in which they are trying to hit Israelis and Israeli targets around the world.
196
So there does have to be a state of heightened alert.
197
And the really big question, of course, is what we do about the Iranian problem in general.
198
And that goes way beyond this specific case.
199
And Chuck, on a different note, or maybe it's somewhat intertwined, where is this war with Iran going?
200
We know that Rubio, there are some reports that he asked the Iranian delegation to leave the United States.
201
Where is this going?
202
Right.
203
Those reports are that the rounds of negotiations have failed, and so he asked them to leave immediately.
204
Unfortunately, I don't think that the negotiations are going anywhere or certainly nowhere soon.
205
And so the big question is, where will we be going with Iran?
206
I expect, I could be wrong about this, I expect that the U .S will not escalate militarily until at least after the midterms.
207
And then the question is whether the president decides to do that or not.
208
But as things stand today, I must say to my very, very deep regret that the war,
209
Israel dreamed for 30 years of a situation in
210
which the U .S might intervene to topple the regime or at least destroy the nuclear program.
211
And we joined in the fighting
212
and Israel turned out to be maybe the closest ally
213
or the most militarily integrated ally that the U .S has had since World War II.
214
We fought a fully joint war, and the outcome at the moment is a strategic failure.
215
Yes, Iran was hurt militarily, but overall, today, they're in a better situation than they were before the war.
216
And we did not achieve our objectives.
217
That leaves us in a very, very bad position.
218
and what's going to happen?
219
Are the Iranians going to do that?
220
Do they conclude from the events that they must break out to the nuclear option?
221
Do they actually conclude the opposite?
222
But if they conclude the first, then what are we going to do about it?
223
It's really unlikely that the U .S will go to war again against Iran, a full -scale war.
224
Limited attacks, yes, and if they do try to break out to the nuclear capability,
225
I could imagine a limited American response against a specific target.
226
But another joint war, it looks like we had our one opportunity, and unfortunately, we blew it.
227
That's a lot to think about.
228
Thank you very much, Professor Chuck Freylich.
229
Thank you.

The IDF says two Hamas operatives involved in terror activity have been eliminated in separate airstrikes in Gaza.
243
The IDF says Mohammed al -Najjar, a member of Hamas's military wing who participated in the October 7th attack, was killed in Han Yunus.
244
Palestinian media identified him as a journalist, but the IDF says he has been advancing attacks against Israeli troops
245
and civilians and working to restore Hamas's military capabilities in violation of the ceasefire.
246
Separately, the IDF says it eliminated Hamas platoon commander Amar Mahmoud Hamed Al -Refi in the Gaza City area.
247
The military says Al -Refi was advancing terror plots against IDF forces
248
and Israeli civilians while also working to rebuild Hamas' military capabilities.
249
The IDF says precision weapons and aerial surveillance were used to reduce the risk to civilians.
250
Israel says its forces will continue acting against immediate threats in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.
251
And last night, United Hatzalah marked 20 years of saving lives with a sold -out Sukkot concert at Jerusalem's Sultan Pool.
252
Some 6 ,400 people came together from Israel and around the world for a night of music and emotion, including the Cooperstein family and a family affected by the Bondi Beach terror attack.
253
The evening also featured an emotional appeal to raise funds for 738 defibrillators, one for every day Bar Cooperstein was held hostage in Gaza.
254
More in this story.
255
These were the scenes at the United Hatzalah 20th anniversary concert,
256
bringing together 6 ,400 people for a sold -out night of celebration and unity.
257
I'm so excited, 20 years for United Hatzalah, and we're here in the Sultan's Pool in Jerusalem.
258
What a great miracle we had today, and we're going to celebrate unity for United Hatzalah, here with the greatest singers,
259
Shweki, Avram Fried, Ishaibov, Zusha, Eliezer, Bar Kuperstein is going to come here.
260
Last year we were praying for him, and he's coming here this year.
261
The evening featured performances by Ishai Rebo, Avram Freed, Yaakov Shweki, Zusha,
262
and Yair El Yatsur, all huge names in the Jewish music industry.
263
Even Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon opened the event by thanking United Hatzalah's volunteers and their supporters.
264
But the evening took an emotional turn when the Kuperstein family went on stage his family.
265
United Hatzalah pledged to bring 738 defibrillators to volunteers,
266
one for each and every day that Bar Cooperstein was held hostage by Hamas.
267
The concert beautifully combined United Hatzalah's life -saving mission,
268
the thousands of volunteers who drop everything to rush to the scene of emergencies across Israel, and the 20 years and millions of people who helped.
269
We're celebrating tonight 20 years of saving lives.
270
United Hatzalah!
271
Music, celebration, commemoration, and meaning.
272
The United Hatzalah 20th anniversary Sukkot performance will go down as a core memory for all who attended,
273
but will also continue to fuel the work of United Hatzalah in saving lives in Israel.
274
now let's take a look at the weather forecast clear skies
275
are expected around most of the country tonight with temperatures reaching lows of 17 degrees celsius
276
or 60 degrees 63 degrees fahrenheit then tomorrow we'll see clear
