What is multi -threading?

Multi -threading means performing multiple tasks in parallel.

This is done using threads.

Thread is basically a small unit that performs some tasks inside your application.

Suppose you want to perform three tasks in parallel, you can create three threads and each thread can perform one task.

How do you create a thread in Java?

There are mainly two ways.

Either extend a class named Thread or implement an interface named Runnable.

Explain the first approach.

We extend the thread class and override its run method.

Whatever task we want the thread to perform, we write inside run.

Then we create an object of our task class.

Using this object we call the start method.

What is the difference between start and run?

Start creates a new thread and then internally executes run.

Calling run directly does not create a new thread.

Explain the second approach.

We implement the runnable interface and override its run method.

Runnable only has run, it does not have start.

So we can't call start directly using the task object.

Hence we create a thread object and pass the task object to its constructor.

This thread object then calls start.

What was the need for this approach?

Its needed because Java does not support multiple inheritance.

Suppose our task class already extends another class then it won't be able to extend thread

but it can still implement runnable that is allowed.
