1
i used to spend hours trying to plan a video
2
and still have no idea what i was actually trying to say i would make an outline rewrite scrap it
3
and start all over again or i'd skip it all
4
and just start filming hoping i would figure it all out in the edit
5
but then i'd be staring at a messy timeline with no
6
clue what the story was actually supposed to be i was
7
overthinking totally getting lost in the details until i started doing something
8
so stupidly simple i couldn't believe it actually worked five lines that's it
9
and suddenly every story clicked you know most comments i get are about my storytelling
10
so today i'll show you a little secret because
11
when you've written down these five lines you've got a blueprint to create a story
12
and a script
13
that actually makes people feel something to create something with a
14
heart you know before youtube i ran my own video agency together with a friend
15
and we created all kinds of stuff we did a lot of commercials we made series small documentaries
16
and you know i always loved to do crazy stuff come up with crazy concepts weird transitions in the scripts
17
and i think really made the the advertisements
18
and the videos we made a lot more awesome
19
but what i kept bumping into over and over again it doesn't matter
20
if you're alone or working with a big crew
21
or doing youtube filmmaking is a lot of decision making
22
and what happens time after time
23
that in this chaos of decision making you're losing the core of the story
24
and this is a big issue
25
because the core of your story is one of the most important things
26
because if you don't know what the story is really about no editing trick
27
or no camera trick is going to save you from that
28
so then how do you get clear what your story is
29
actually about well that's where the five line story method comes in
30
so this is the method
31
that i've been using to create almost all my story driven
32
videos the only thing you have to do is write five lines
33
so watch this
34
so your first line will be about the situation that's the starting point where are we
35
and what's happening
36
and how does the world look like where we're in the second line will be about the desire
37
so what does the character want what does he want to obtain
38
or what does he want to reach the third line is
39
about the conflict what gets in the way where's the tension
40
or what is an obstacle that makes it hard to reach the desire?
41
Then the fourth line is going to be about change.
42
So what happens that shifts something?
43
This could be a turning point in the story,
44
something big or something small,
45
or just a different way of seeing something.
46
And then the fifth and last line is going to be the result.
47
So how does it end?
48
What's the new reality?
49
And how is the situation different now from when we started?
50
Now this might all sound very simple and easy,
51
But believe me when I say that simple is good with filmmaking.
52
Because these five lines will help you to see the whole story before you get distracted by everything else.
53
By gear transitions, voiceovers, endless color grading, you name it.
54
There are so many details and so many choices to be made.
55
So if you nail these five lines first,
56
you've got the emotional core of your story.
57
It's like the life thread.
58
Now I'm going to explain you why this works so well.
59
But first I want to show you a little example of how even big Hollywood films use this structure for their movies.
60
So let me show you with a story that you definitely know, The Lying King.
61
Let's start with the situation.
62
Simba is a young prince excited to one day rule the Pride Lands.
63
The desire, he wants to prove he's brave and worthy of being a king.
64
The conflict, after his father's death Simba runs away ashamed and afraid to face his past.
65
Then the change.
66
Simba grows up and with help from his friends and a vision from his father,
67
Simba returns to confront Scar and take his place as a king.
68
And the result, he restores balance to the pride lands and steps fully into who he was meant to be.
69
So obviously there's missing quite some details to make the story a little bit richer,
70
but it is the whole story.
71
And the funny thing is,
72
once I started using this method,
73
I started seeing this in every movie that i saw
74
and probably you will too now next time when you watch a movie you will probably see
75
the point where the conflict is introduced or where the desire is introduced
76
so i'm sorry if no movie will be the same anymore for you
77
but you know it's not just a beginner's trick it's just how almost every story works
78
so now let's break down each line to see why it
79
actually matters the situation where we are is very important
80
because it gives the viewer a clear starting point of where we are,
81
what's happening and who's in the story.
82
They will know the world that we're in and what we're actually talking about.
83
The desire that really shows the goal or the need that's driving the story.
84
And this usually really sparks the curiosity of the audience.
85
And this is the part where people will lean more into the story
86
and they start to care about whether you're getting the thing or not.
87
And the audience will start to feel invested in the story.
88
And maybe the thing that the main character wants is something they want as well.
89
So the third one, the conflict introduces tension or an obstacle.
90
And this is really something that stories need.
91
Because if there's no tension,
92
there's no obstacle if there's no challenge there's not really a reason to keep watching for the audience
93
so the fourth one is change
94
and this really marks a turning point in the story
95
so it could be an insight or an action or anything
96
that shifts everything you know it really shows growth
97
and it gives the audience the feeling of movement forward the fifth result
98
so this should really give your audience a satisfying takeaway a feeling of closure
99
and ending and it should be something
100
that ties everything of the whole story together
101
and it shows how the world or the situation
102
or the character is different from the starting point together these
103
five lines are just how we naturally process every story
104
so i'm going to show you an example of how these
105
five lines actually play out in one of my own youtube videos
106
but first i want you to know
107
that these five lines aren't your whole video they are some
108
sort of launch pad you can use them to kick off your story and start building
109
from your five lines or you can use them to come back at any time
110
when your project is overwhelming you to take a look again at your five lines
111
and to see the things that you are building in your story
112
if you can connect them back to one of your five lines okay
113
so now i'm going to show you how one of my
114
own youtube videos that's over eight minutes long can be downgraded
115
to just five lines watch this i'm a filmmaker from the netherlands
116
and i've loved making videos since i was a kid
117
My dream was to be a YouTuber and sharing stories from the heart,
118
not just for clients.
119
But every time I tried to start,
120
self-doubt and overthinking pulled me back.
121
When I let go of the YouTube dream,
122
I finally realized I was focusing on the wrong reasons and I just wanted to create stories.
123
So I finally sat down and started,
124
and this video is the result.
125
And that first step pushed me to go all in on this YouTube journey.
126
So that was basically the whole story of my first YouTube video in 5 lights.
127
And now the cool thing is,
128
when you can do it with 5 lines,
129
you can do it with 10 as well.
130
Watch this.
131
I'm a filmmaker from the Netherlands and I've loved making videos since I was a kid.
132
My dream was to be a YouTuber and sharing stories from the heart,
133
not just for clients.
134
But every time I tried to start,
135
self-doubt and overthinking pulled me back.
136
My mind kept yelling, you can't go from making ads for big companies to making YouTube videos.
137
Those fears became excuses.
138
I'm too late, I'm too old,
139
I don't have enough skills, gear, security.
140
So I let go of the big YouTube dream and at first it felt good and I felt free.
141
But then the same question kept coming back.
142
Why did I actually want to do YouTube all the time?
143
When I stripped away views,
144
subscribers and money, I realized it's about the joy of creating and sharing stories.
145
That realization made me push through self-doubts,
146
focus on the process and the video you're watching right now is the result of that.
147
It wasn't easy, but I already learned so much
148
and it even made me go all in on YouTube and share every lesson along the way.
149
So going from 5 lines to 10 lines doesn't change the core of the story,
150
it just adds more richness and more details.
151
And I could show you the 20 line version now as well,
152
but I think you get the point.
153
I could continue showing you more lines until I show you the whole video.
154
So if you can do five lines,
155
you can expand and expand more and create a whole story.
156
So you've seen now how these five lines can help you to guide an entire video.
157
But if you find it still really hard to create your own story driven videos or to finish them,
158
or you just want to become a better storyteller by actually creating something instead of watching endless tutorials like this one,
159
then you could get my Story Starter Kit.
160
It will help you to turn your five lines into an actual shot list.
161
It helps you to edit your story with my editing templates.
162
And it guides you step by step with a video walkthrough.
163
With a lot of extra tips and inspiration.
164
I just launched the kit last month.
165
So it's still available for a launch price.
166
I think it's very affordable.
167
And if it might be something for you,
168
just check out the link in the description.
169
And if not, really not a problem.
170
You can still use this method for your next project.
171
So thanks for watching and if you now want to know the 9 only simple shots
172
that I use to create any story with,
173
you can watch this video next.
174
Cheers!
