1
Oh little kitty, please look at yourself.
2
Too much social media seems to be affecting you lately.
3
Oh, whatever.
4
I think it's time to share with you all the consequences
5
of spending too much time online by answering a need of the hour question.
6
What if you spend too much time on social media?
7
Zoom in.
8
Let's be honest.
9
Social media helps us to stay connected with friends and family.
10
access educational information, learn about what's happening around the world and much more.
11
In general, there is no harm in using it.
12
But as we know, too much of anything is bad.
13
And the same can be aptly said for social media too.
14
And believe it or not, we are spending quite some time scrolling through our screens.
15
Greens.
16
Yes, according to some studies conducted in 2022,
17
on average, an Internet user spends a whopping 6 hours and 53 minutes online per day.
18
So, it won't be wrong to say
19
that people are getting addicted to it the same way people would get addicted to alcohol, cigarettes or drugs.
20
But, how is that possible?
21
Well, it's because just like any other addiction, most social media sites are deliberately designed to have the same
22
addictive effects on our brains by triggering the brain's reward system to release dopamine,
23
the feel-good chemical you get for doing things you like.
24
Though there is nothing wrong with an optimum level of dopamine as our bodies need it for better functioning and staying motivated,
25
but when we start to perform the same thing repetitively,
26
the action becomes less exciting and the brain reduces the level of dopamine.
27
So, to get out of this dopamine deficit state and feel good again,
28
we end up consuming more of these platforms to give us the same pleasure we experienced with a lesser amount before.
29
And, as our phones are easily accessible,
30
in no time we become addicted to these speedy rewards disguised as likes comments
31
and other notifications but the major problem with all this is
32
that these dopamine deficit states can feel similar to depression and anxiety that could harm our professional,
33
social and academic life.
34
We get used to this quick reward system
35
and many compulsive social media users end up giving up their hobbies that involve a lot of effort to achieve success.
36
Because of all this, cyber bullying,
37
privacy issues, feeling inferior and coming across inappropriate content can also have a harsh effect on us.
38
Which makes us wonder, what should we do to avoid getting addicted to protect ourselves?
39
Well, the first and foremost thing is to try to actively create time in your schedule
40
when you are not on any screen.
41
as some quiet time can be great brain break.
42
Secondly, while doing an important task like homework,
43
try to get into the habit of keeping your phone far away with your notifications off.
44
Thirdly, spend quality time with friends, family and with your hobbies.
45
And most importantly, do not share any personal information like your address, phone number or school name with strangers.
46
Also, pledge not to use technology to hurt anyone else through bullying or gossip.
47
Soon you'll discover countless benefits of living in the real world.
48
Trivia Time!
49
Did you know people touch their smartphones over 2600 times a day? a day.
50
Also, young adults who used more than 300 minutes of social
51
media per day were 2.8 times more likely to become depressed within 6 months.
52
Hope you learned something important today.
53
Until next time, it's me Dr. Binox, Zooming out.
54
No Kitty, that phone is very expensive.
55
Ow!
56
Never mind.

"What If You Spent Too Much Time On Phone? | Social Media | The Dr Binocs Show | Peekaboo Kidz"
