Shadowing Practice: Building a REAL pawn that transforms into a queen (automatically) - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
This pawn can transform itself into a queen, potentially changing the way chess can be played. In chess,
2
moving your pawn to the opposing side of the board will give you the option to promote it to another piece.
3
But manually swapping out your pieces can be a little underwhelming.
4
So for the past six months, I've been designing, prototyping, and testing a transforming pawn that is successful may surprise a few players,
5
and even be something that you can add to your own game of chess.
6
- Yes.
7
This all started earlier this year
8
when another creator by the name of Polly Fjord uploaded a video where he designed
9
and animated a pawn that transforms or self -promotes into a queen.
10
If you haven't seen this yet, I highly recommend checking his video out.
11
It was such a cool concept that I knew I had to make it for real.
12
My plan is to do just that.
13
Design a real pawn that can rearrange its parts to form the silhouette of a queen.
14
promoted to a queen, whatever we come up with should give us a good base to eventually build the other pieces as well.
15
This project is inspired by Palifjord's video, so like him I will be using a Staunton #6 pawn and queen as reference.
16
Luckily, they both have similar features to each other, which should make it easier when we start to break this down.
17
First, there's the obvious height difference.
18
The pawn has to grow vertically to match that of the queen.
19
There's also a diameter difference, where almost every feature of the queen has a larger diameter.
20
And finally, there's the question of how to activate this transformation.
21
And how we're going to hold everything together.
22
So because chess is such an old game, and you can basically play with rocks, I don't want to design anything electronic into this.
23
The thought of having to charge or replace the batteries on a chess piece just doesn't really sit right with me.
24
And something that is purely mechanical, I think would really suit the feel of this game.
25
Thank you.
26
you So this is what I've been working on over the past two weeks.
27
With just a slight push on the top of the pawn.
28
Thank you.
29
It has promoted itself into a queen.
30
Now when I said it took me two weeks, what I meant was animating all of that.
31
I haven't actually made anything yet.
32
But what you might have noticed is that this whole thing got a lot chunkier.
33
Which is also bad news.
34
But in order to fit all the springs and mechanisms in there, I had to keep increasing the size of the pond.
35
Now I'd like to decrease the size of this, but first let's go see if any of this actually works.
36
The next day, we are going to be in the next day.
37
Thank you.
38
So I finally got some functioning parts But 3D printing this from resin isn't my intended material.
39
See I've designed most of this to be CNC machined So I've got dovetail joints and cylindrical features all over this
40
But since I don't have any CNC machines I've reached out to the team at Proto Labs
41
and they've agreed to help me with some of the design process and material selection.
42
with some of their engineers, we've decided to move the gold back towards 3D printing.
43
That's because the cost of some of my parts to be CNC machined was just going to be way too expensive.
44
especially if I want to make more than one revision on this.
45
And Protolabs has actually been generous enough to sponsor a part of this video
46
and supply 3D printed parts as well as some manufacturing expertise along this early design stage.
47
I also found their online quoting platform to be extremely helpful in narrowing down some of my options.
48
So if you'd like to learn more about them, go to protolabs .com.
49
But for now, it's back to the drawing board because I've got to redesign this entire thing for 3D printing.
50
Once placed on the last square, a magnet in the base releases the tension of a wound spring, triggering the mechanism.
51
This spring turns a cam in the base to expand the diameter.
52
The cam is connected to a lead screw that drives the center upward, telescoping out the neck and expanding the crown.
53
If you didn't notice, I've redesigned the silhouette after I got some more feedback on the previous version being too chunky.
54
And I think this one is a far better resemblance of the original inspiration.
55
I know, it's larger than the wooden pond, but the wooden set is actually fairly small.
56
And I've made sure this set is within the International Chess Federation's rules and regulations.
57
This new model is designed to be 3D printed and 3D printed without any supports.
58
Thank you you I'm going to put it in the bag.
59
I'm going to put it in the middle of the bag.
60
Okay.
61
So after that mess, I went to take a break
62
and that's when I came across this video that crushed any motivation I had left.
63
So I wasn't able to get permission to show it here, but I'm sure most of you have seen this by now.
64
and probably been yelling at the screen this whole time about how this whole thing has already been done before.
65
Basically, in the video, the creator, who goes by Pig Millionaire, made a 3D printed pond that with a couple of twists, and an extension is converted into a queen.
66
And I'll admit it is pretty cool.
67
but I can't help but feel defeated at this point.
68
So I switched gears for the past few months and I made an unpickable lock instead.
69
If you enjoy locking mechanisms, fun animations, and a redemption arc, definitely go check that video out.
70
Anyways, this break helped my brain reset, and I'm coming back with a fresh perspective.
71
And I think I'm really close.
72
I just think the spring was a little bit too powerful for some of these 3D printed parts.
73
But I would like to keep this design as accessible as possible with as many 3D printed parts as possible.
74
So I've gone back into the CAD file, removed the clock spring, remodeled a few of the internal pieces, and switched back to a compression spring.
75
So I've had a few questions on the software that I use in my designs, and I do all my modeling in Onshape.
76
I'm fortunate enough to have them as an ongoing sponsor, but I'd probably be using them even if they weren't.
77
I need CAD software to do all my modeling
78
and Onshape has the professional level features I just don't think I could do without.
79
So if you're interested you can try Onshape for free using the link in the description.
80
After those changes I finally think we have something worth trying again.

112
I'm going to go to the next video.
113
You might be wondering how this one activates.
114
Like the previous version, there are magnets in the base.
115
And once placed on a magnetic surface, the magnets pull down a part with little ramps on it.
116
These little ramps force open a flexible trigger on the bottom, releasing the spring and triggering the transformation.
117
That's fun!
118
- Now that we know this works and because just any old chessboard won't do,
119
We'll need to make a chessboard and 15 more pieces.
120
I'm going to go to the next one.
121
- - Bye.
122
Bye.
123
For the big test, I've invited a few friends and family.
124
We're gonna play a few games and see how it goes.
125
I'm a cookie, though.
126
Here we go.
127
Yeah.
128
You're right, buddy.
129
You're right.
130
Oh, that's a snap.
131
Oh, I got 40 seconds.
132
That's checkmate.
133
Oh, that is.
134
You can't move any of these.
135
Good game.
136
Well, that's just about it.
137
The ponds definitely performed and exceeded my expectations.
138
And it definitely bumps up the heart rate from your average chess game.
139
There's just a little more to this video, so stick around if you would like to make your very own.
140
- Thank you all for watching and I really hope you enjoyed.
141
As promised, if you'd like to print your very own queen pawn, a step -by -step book, a video guide, and the CAD files are available on my Patreon page.
142
So as always, this is a work in progress.
143
There's still a ton of things I would change and like to improve on this.
144
But I would love to hear what you think, what you think could be improved, or even how this might change the way chess is played.
145
If you like this video and are interested in more projects like this one, don't forget to subscribe because as always, there are more projects in the works.
146
Wait, go back and do it again.
147
Go back and do it again.
