Shadowing Practice: DataLayer explained in 90 seconds - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
When Google Tag Manager is installed on a website, an invisible layer called data layer is added as well.
2
You can think of it as a bucket.
3
The website puts information into that bucket, let's say a product price or the fact that someone made a purchase, and then Google Tag Manager reads from that bucket.
4
That's the whole idea.
5
Information can be put into the data layer with a line of code called data layer push.
6
Your developer can use it, a website plugin can use it, even you can use it.
7
That push is basically a message that tells Google Tag Manager, hey, here's an event that just happened, and here's more information about it.
8
On the other side, Google Tag Manager is watching.
9
That message comes in, a trigger fires, a tag grabs values and sends them to Google Analytics, Google Ads, whatever you need.
10
For example, Google Analytics event tag has a checkbox that picks the e-commerce data from the data layer.
11
But not all tags can pick the data automatically.
12
In many cases, you will need to pick the data yourself.
13
That can be done with a data layer variable.
14
Just decide what data you want to use, create a variable, enter a parameter name, and you're done.
15
Now you can insert this variable in tags and that data will be sent to other platforms.
16
So that's the data layer, an invisible layer between your website and Google Tech Manager.

Practice Tips

The video’s speed is perfect for shadowing—slow enough to follow, but natural enough to build real-world fluency. Here’s how to use the shadowing technique effectively: First, watch the video once to understand the content. Then, play short clips (5-10 seconds) and repeat them immediately, copying the speaker’s intonation and rhythm. Focus on words like "invisible," "parameter," and "automatically"—they’re great for practicing clear pronunciation. If you stumble, rewind and try again—consistency is key! For extra practice, use a shadowing site to record yourself and compare it to the original. This helps you notice areas to improve, whether for IELTS speaking practice or everyday conversation. Keep going—you’re doing amazing, and every repetition brings you closer to sounding more confident in English!
