Chapter 2 A strange yawning in Red's gut.
13
The sound hidden by the wheels of the road.
14
She couldn't be hungry, could she?
15
They only stopped for dinner at a rest stop a few hours ago, but the feeling doubled down, twisting again, so she reached out for a bag of chips in front of Maddie.
16
She removed a handful, placing them carefully in her mouth, one by one, cheese dust coating her fingertips.
17
Oh yeah, Simon said, standing up and settling out of the booth, heading toward his bunk beyond the mini -kitchen,
18
and youse all owe me seven bucks for the snacks I got at the gas station.
19
Red stared down at the chips left in her hand.
20
Hey, Maddie leaned over the table.
21
I'll cover you for the snacks.
22
Don't worry about it.
23
Red Swallow looked down even farther to hide her eyes from Maddie.
24
Not worrying wasn't a choice.
25
Not one Red had anyway.
26
In her darkest moments, those winter nights when she had to wear her coat to bed, over two pairs of pajamas and five pairs of socks,
27
and still shivered anyway, Red sometimes wished she were Maddie LaVoy.
28
To live in the warm house is thought as though it
29
belonged to her to have every single thing they had
30
and everything she didn't anymore stopped
31
that she felt the flesh in her cheeks shame was a
32
red feeling a hot one just like like just like guilt
33
and anger why couldn't the kinnies heat their home on guilt
34
and shame alone but things would get better soon right real soon
35
that was the plan what it was all for
36
and then everything would be different how freeing it would be to just do
37
or think and not have to double think or triple think
38
or say no thank you maybe next time to not beg for extra shifts at work
39
and lose sleep either way to take another handful of chips just
40
because she wanted to red realized she hadn't said anything yet thanks she mumbled keeping her eyes to herself
41
but she didn't take any more chips it didn't feel right she just have to live with
42
that feeling in her gut
43
and maybe it wasn't hunger after all no worries maddie said
44
there see she didn't have any maddie had no need for
45
worries she was one of those people who was good for everything first try well apart from this time
46
that time she insisted on taking up the harp unless red was one of maddie's worries it did seem
47
that way sometimes are we in south carolina yet red said
48
changing the subject one thing she was good at not yet
49
oliver called behind though he wasn't the the lavoie she'd asked
50
soon i think we should be at the campsite in around
51
40 minutes woohoo spring break simon yelled again in a high pitched voice
52
and somehow he had another bottle of beer in his hand the refrigerator door swinging open behind him.
53
I got it, Arthur said, passing an unsteady Simon in a narrow space between the sofa bed and the dining table.
54
Clapping him on the back, Arthur darted forward to catch the refrigerator door and pushed it shut.
55
The dim overhead lights flashing against his gold -framed glasses as he turned.
56
Red likes his glasses standing out against his tan skin and curly dark brown hair.
57
She wondered whether she needed glasses.
58
Far away things seemed to have gotten farther and fuzzier lately, another thing to add to the worry list, because she couldn't do anything about it.
59
Yet, Arthur caught her looking, smiling, and he ran a finger through the light stubble on his chin.
60
Given up on 20 questions, have you?
61
He asked them both.
62
Red forgot her person -plated thing, Maddie said, and that made Red think.
63
Wasn't there something else she'd forgotten, something she wanted to ask Maddie?
64
Chip.
65
Maddie offered the bag to Arthur.
66
I'm good, thanks.
67
He backed away from the bag, almost tripping over the corner of the sofa bed.
68
A look clouded his eyes, and now that she was looking, was there a slight sheen of sweat on his forehead.
69
Red didn't normally catch these things, but this one she did.
70
Did that mean she looked at him too often?
71
What's up?
72
She said, deathly allergic to cheese puffs.
73
No, thankfully, Arthur said, feeling his way as he sat down on the sofa bed.
74
Oh, yes.
75
Red needed to ask Maddie about which side she slept on.
76
Arthur just had said something.
77
She hadn't listened.
78
Best to go with a well -placed, with a well -placed, huh?
79
I said, at least I don't feel as dizzy as Simon probably does.
80
Car sick, Red said.
81
Well, RV sick.
82
No, it's not that.
83
Arthur shook his head.
84
Probably far too late to be telling you all this, but I'm not that great with tight spaces.
85
He looked around at the crammed -in furniture in the compact kitchen.
86
I thought it would be wider.
87
That's what she said, Simon interrupted.
88
For God's sake, Simon, enough with the office references, Maddie said.
89
He's been doing that since middle school, before he even knew what it meant.
90
I'm standing right here, Mads don't - third -person me.
91
Can you all shut up for a second?
92
Oliver spoke over Maddie's rapport.
93
Retort.
94
We're trying to navigate over here.
95
Red turned back to Arthur.
96
Well, good thing you're not spending a whole week in the cramped RV.
97
Oh, wait.
98
Red smiled at him.
99
I know, right?
100
Arthur was Simon's friend, really, but he was all of theirs by now.
101
He didn't go to their high school.
102
He went to one in South Philly, but he and Simon were on the same basketball team,
103
both joined last year sometime red guest arthur didn't didn't much like his friends at his own school
104
because he'd been coming to all of their parties
105
and hangouts since senior year began and that was okay
106
because she liked having him around he always asked how she was
107
and how was her day even though red usually answered with lies
108
or exaggerated stories with only faint traces of the truth he showed interest
109
when red wasn't interesting at all and there was
110
that time he dropped her home after the new year's eve party
111
and let her sit in his car warming up in the
112
dry air of the heater before she had to go inside the cold house
113
and find whatever mess her dad had left for her arthur
114
didn't know what was happening he thought they were just talking
115
talking the night away at two in the morning outside her
116
house a small kindness he never knew he'd given her she
117
could have she should have given get she should give him
118
one back we'll be at the campsite soon i think she said you can get out
119
and stretch your legs in the great big outdoors I'll come
120
with you yeah Arthur smiled it'll be fine his gaze dropped
121
from her face to the table where she was resting one hand I was meaning to ask you earlier
122
but I didn't want to distract you from driving what does your hand say oh red blushed raising the hand
123
and rubbing at it self -consciously realizing as she did that
124
that there was something written on the back of her hand on the back of
125
that one too to do lists everywhere even on her own body to do lists
126
and never get done lists i've got two for one special
127
for you she said on your left hand we have call
128
it at &t ah i see fascinating what about he asked
129
you know red said just to check in with them
130
and see how they're doing whether they're they've had a good day arthur nodded
131
or a smile that matches hers
132
and did you do it red pursed her lips looking at
133
the empty box she drawn near her knuckle no she said i ran out of time
134
and hand number two on hand number two red said drawing with surprise we have to the very elaborate
135
and detailed instruction pack you must have done
136
that one arthur said just about she replied like it was a joke
137
but she was telling the truth this time packed literally right
138
before she left the house this morning no time to even
139
double check her bag against her list she'd been too busy
140
making sure there were enough there was enough food in the house for her dad
141
while she was away well if you
142
if you did it why haven't you checked it off arthur
143
said pointing at the small empty box on the see -through
144
flesh of her hand here he stood up grabbing one of maddie's pens from the table
145
that she used in an earlier game of hangman he uncapped it
146
and leaned toward red pressing the felt tip against her skin
147
gently he drew two lines a check mark in the little
148
box there you go he said standing back to admire his handiwork red looked at her hand
149
and it felt stupid to admit to herself
150
but the side of the little check mark did change something
151
in her small minuscule a tiny firework bursting in her head
152
but it felt good it always felt good checking off those
153
boxes she held out her hand proudly for maddie to examine
154
and got the nod of approval she was looking for arthur
155
was still watching her a look in his eyes a different one
156
that red couldn't decipher brazil nuts red said arthur's face screwed
157
up what i used to be allergic to them as a kid but i'm not anymore
158
it's that weird isn't it that weird that a person can just change like
159
that she said fidgeting with the front pocket of her light
160
blue jeans she'd been sitting here in the same in this
161
spot a long time now too long my my parents had to write it on my hand
162
so I wouldn't forget also does that pattern
163
and the curtains remind anyone of something she touched the white
164
and blue curtain hanging down next to her running her hand
165
between the pleats it's been bugging me all day can't work out what it is a cartoon
166
or something it's just a random pattern Maddie answered no it's
167
something it's something red traced her finger over it like the
168
silhouette of a character she couldn't quite place from a book she read at night
169
or a tv show either way best not to think back to the to
170
that time to when she was little
171
because who else might be there tomatoes arthur said saving her
172
from the memory give me a rash around my mouth only
173
when raw though he straightened up as did the wrinkles
174
and his white baseball jersey navy on the arms anyway i think i better help with the direction.
175
I'm sensing that Simon is being a hindrance.
176
I'm doing a stellar job.
177
Thank you very much, Simon said.
178
Looking over Oliver's shoulder at an iPhone with a marble orange case must be Raina's.
179
There was a map on the screen, a blue dot moving along a highlighted road.
180
The blue dot was them, the six of them, all 31 feet of the RV.
181
thank god it wasn't a red dot blue was safer arthur
182
settled to the front blocking red's view of the screen her
183
eyes falling instead to maddie who gave her a not so subtle wink huh
184
maddie's sister silently nodding at her over
185
so slightly arthur's direction checks all the boxes she whispered stop
186
it red warned her you stop it they both stopped
187
because just then maddie's phone rang an angry wasp buzz against
188
the table the screen lit up with the view from the front camera The off -white ceiling
189
and a silver of the underside of Maddie's chin across the
190
top was the word mom in FaceTime video with a slide -to -answer button waiting patiently at the bottom.
191
Maddie's reaction was instant, too quick.
192
She tensed, bone sharpening beneath her skin.
193
Her hand darted out to grab the phone, holding it up to hide it from Red.
194
Red knew what she was doing.
195
She always knew, though.
196
Maddie didn't know she knew.
197
I'll call her
198
when we get to the campsite Maddie said almost too quiet
199
to hear over the wheels pressing the side button to project the call looking anywhere
200
but at red mom like Maddie thought red would split open
201
and bleed just to see the word it had been the
202
same for years in freshman year Maddie used to take the kids to the side
203
and tell them off for saying yo mama jokes in front
204
of red she didn't think red would ever find out it
205
was a forbidden word a dirty word she even got we
206
are talking about the murmurs parade in front of red how
207
ridiculous except the thing was maddie wasn't wrong red did bleed
208
just to see the word to hear it to think it
209
to remember the guilt leaving a crater in her chest blood red is her name
210
and red is her shame so she didn't think of it
211
or remember and she wouldn't look to the left to see her mom's face
212
and a reflection in the window no she wouldn't these eyes were just hers
213
that is the end of chapter two i will see you guys in the next video bye

“Used to” used to + werkwoord — een vroegere gewoonte of toestand die niet meer kloptused to be · used to take
Lijdende vorm be + voltooid deelwoord — het gaat om wat er gebeurt, niet om wie het doethave been warned · is thought
Past continuous was/were + -ing — iets dat op een moment in het verleden bezig waswas looking · was happening · was resting
Advies met “should” should + werkwoord — zeggen wat een goed idee isshould be · should have
