Shadowing Practice: I'm a K-Pop Idol. Here's What REALLY Happens During Fan Calls - Learn English Speaking with Video

Les maken...
1
For many K -pop fans, a video call with their idols can be one of the most memorable moments of their life.
2
They spend thousands of dollars, prepare weeks ahead of time, just to spend a few minutes with their favorite idols.
3
But on the other side of the screen, it's a completely different world.
4
Our staff watching our every move.
5
Do idols actually know who's calling them? there's an entire operation happening on the other side that almost nobody gets to see.
6
So, what actually happens during a K -pop fan call?
7
Today I'm going to a fan call, and apparently, no one has ever properly shown the behind -the -scenes of a fan call.
8
So I might as well take you guys with me and explain how this whole thing works.
9
So, what actually is a K -pop fan call?
10
Well, you probably already know that fan signs have been a culture in K -pop since forever now.
11
When an artist releases new music, fans who buy their albums get a chance to meet their idols face -to -face through a lottery system.
12
They go to the event, talk to the artists for a few minutes, and get their album signed.
13
It's a system company uses to get fans to buy more than one copy of their albums.
14
The more popular the group, the less chances you'll win, leading fans to buy hundreds of copies of the same album while companies profit more.
15
Yep, classic capitalism.
16
When COVID hit, restrictions made in -person fan signs impossible.
17
Companies needed a different way to make profit, leading to the popularization of video fan calls.
18
They basically work the same way as fan signs.
19
They get a few minutes with the artists, their album gets signed and sent to them, all done remotely.
20
Fan calls were supposed to be a pandemic workaround, but even after COVID passed, they ended up becoming a permanent aspect to K -pop culture,
21
as they made events accessible to international fans while still working extremely well with the existing album sales model.
22
Now, not all fan signs and video calls revolve around a group's comeback or promotion.
23
For groups who aren't promoting a new release, they can replace signing albums with photo cards, posters, and magazines.
24
Every video call is a little bit different, but their systems are basically the same.
25
Fans buy albums.
26
Their purchase counts as raffle entries.
27
Winners are selected, or in a case where they're not promoting a release, fans purchase a fan call ticket.
28
They receive instructions at time, verify their identity, and then show up for their call.
29
As I said, I'm going to a fan sign event today, and I realized that no one has properly shown the behind the scenes of a fan call.
30
Probably for a good reason, but I guess I'll bring you guys with me.
31
If you're someone who bed robots all day playing mobile games like me, you might as well get rewarded for it.
32
Freecash is a platform where companies reward you for trying out their apps, whether that's playing games, completing surveys, or trying out new apps.
33
Now let's set some expectations.
34
This is not a get rich quick side hustle.
35
You're not going to make thousands of dollars and it's definitely not going to replace your salary.
36
Think of it more as a way to make a little extra pocket money while doing things you already enjoy.
37
I know we're still skeptical so let me explain how it works.
38
You probably noticed that advertisements are everywhere on social media and most of the time we just scroll right past them.
39
So instead of spending millions on ads that people don't really care about, brands are choosing to reward people directly for trying out their products through FreeCash.
40
Lately, I've been playing Monopoly.
41
The more you progress in the game, the more rewards you can unlock.
42
Once you reach the minimum withdrawal limit, you can cash out through PayPal, Visa, gift cards, and other available payout options.
43
Just make sure you have app tracking enabled so the app can accurately track your progress.
44
Now, I happen to live in Korea, so I have access to quite a few rewards and offers, but keep in mind that the offers available can vary depending on where you live.
45
FreeCash currently has a 4 .6 rating on Trustpilot and a 4 -star rating on the App Store.
46
So if you're someone who already spends hours playing mobile games, you might be missing out on rewards for games you're already playing.

50
Hi hi, we're here at the fansign place.
51
The other members are in the other room because they're too loud and I can't really talk.
52
So I'm here to talk to you guys for a bit before I join them.
53
A lot of you guys have been telling me to do something new with my hair, so I got a perm today.
54
Anyways, there's things we have to do before we actually get into the fansign, So I'm going to take you through what our pre -fansign routine looks like.
55
We usually arrive an hour before the event starts because there's quite a few things to do.
56
They also give out signed photocards and polaroids, so we would get those signed first.
57
All the organizers we work with always asked for drink menus and got us coffee.
58
I don't know if it's a thing with fansigns, but I just know that whenever I have a fansign, I'm getting a free bubble tea with it.
59
Here, we're taking a video of our fan call seating order, so the fans know who's going first and last.
60
Then when the time comes, we move into the other room where the call would actually take place.
61
This particular room is more cramped than usual, but the setup is basically the same.
62
We have a large table setup with a lot of ring lights, because without good lighting, we look kind of wacky.
63
I'm not gonna lie.
64
In front of us are some marker pens.
65
On the left, we have the list of participants we're going to be meeting today in order.
66
On the right, we have posters we're signing with the names of the participants attached, so we don't misspell them.
67
When signing for a fan call, our signature and a two blank blank are required.
68
Some require additional messages, some don't.
69
If not required, we're not allowed to write or draw anything other than our signs, because apparently the pricings are different and
70
if we do whatever we wanted it's gonna mess up their
71
system now the staff are on the other side of the table
72
and these people are all staff of the organizer our staff
73
isn't even in the room they're watching us from the outside my boss took this footage for me
74
and he said we look like a bunch of call center workers trying to scam people Huh.
75
The staff in the room are contacting and doing test calls with the participants, making sure they're prepared to go on cue.
76
Look at those phones on the floor.
77
A lot of these staff are also bi or trilingual, so they would help translate if the artist and the fan don't speak the same language.
78
For this one, they didn't have translators, so when a member asks us for help, I would chime in like the nice guy I am.
79
Then there's the phone.
80
A name tag is usually attached to the phone, and there's two headphone jacks, one for the artist and the other for the staff.
81
Now with this particular organizer, they're using their own app with these calls.
82
So once we press start, it starts the call with the timer and automatically ends it once the timer is up.
83
Usually with other organizers who uses Katok, Line, or Skype, staff would monitor the calls and time it.
84
Once the timer is up, they would inform the fans to wrap up.
85
So yes, most of the time, staff are monitoring the calls.
86
Keep in mind that these staff aren't our staff and we don't know them.
87
But I bet if there's a sensitive topic companies don't want their idols to be asked about, staff from the company would monitor instead.
88
For today's event, we have three rounds of fan calls.
89
A group fan call where the participants would go through each
90
and every member a 3 -minute solo fan call with only one member, and a 5 -minute solo fan call.
91
Each organizer would do something different, so sometimes it might be 1 minute, sometimes it might be 10.
92
Yeah, 10 minutes.
93
For group calls, a single phone is passed around to each member along with the signed poster.
94
So yes, we do simultaneously sign the posters while we call.
95
Then we get to our solo calls, which are usually done on one single phone.
96
And let me tell you, we look better on Android cameras.
97
With iPhones, the camera and lighting just makes us look so rough.
98
So with our solo calls, if we get an iPhone, we're gonna look rough for the rest of the day.
99
Common fan call etiquettes we're told to follow by the company and also because it's common sense.
100
Let the fans ask you the questions unless told otherwise.
101
They spent days preparing the conversations, so you don't want to let their hard work go to waste.
102
Everything's recorded, so stay on your guard.
103
No picking your nose, no accidentally saying anything weird.
104
We're not allowed to go past the time limit as it's gonna delay and with each person, it's gonna stack up longer and longer.
105
So when there's 10 seconds left on the clock, we're told to wrap up and say our goodbyes.
106
Don't go into other members' fan calls.
107
Sometimes fans don't like that.
108
If we're uncomfortable and need help, look for the staff.
109
Don't cause a scene.
110
Obviously, don't fight with a fan.
111
Try not to mispronounce names.
112
If you can't pronounce it, ask them politely.
113
Or just don't call them by their name.
114
Don't mix up nationalities and cultures.
115
That's gonna make you look like a fool.
116
Yeah, I think that's pretty much it.
117
I've often been asked, so what's it like to talk to strangers for a living?
118
i like to think of our calls as friends catching up a lot of the participants are returning fans
119
and i've actually gotten to know a lot of them throughout the years
120
so every time i do a call with a fan i
121
recognize i treat it like a catch -up session with a
122
old friend i am an expensive friend to catch up with
123
after three hours of talking to people we're done with our video call event
124
and i'm ready to leave now i am home from the
125
fan sign hi hi i've shown you how it works let
126
me answer some juicy questions you guys have asked me about fan signs.
127
Question one, do idols actually remember their fans?
128
Yes, I can tell you that idols definitely can remember a fan, especially if we've seen you more than three to four times.
129
I think that's when my brain starts recognizing you as an actual person in my life.
130
Can the staff hear everything you and the fans say?
131
Yes, the staff could.
132
If you're shy, you're like, oh, I don't want staff to eavesdrop.
133
They're not actually interested in our conversations.
134
I don't think they care.
135
And hey, they've seen weird stuff.
136
Like believe me, no one can be weirder than what they've already seen.
137
Unless you poop on camera.
138
That's a different story.
139
Can idols see the fan before the call connects?
140
Before a call, sometimes we could see you.
141
Especially if you're in katok or line, we can definitely see you.
142
I've seen people laid down scrolling TikTok, retouching their makeup, leaving to the bathroom.
143
Honestly, it's pretty funny.
144
It's the highlight of the calls.
145
Do idols get tired of talking?
146
In the moment when we're working.
147
There's this dopamine rush.
148
I feel like everything's so hectic.
149
So there's no time to be tired.
150
So I feel like in the moment, we're locking.
151
Next question.
152
Do idols have scripts?
153
Do you ever get awkward to run out of things to say?
154
No, there's no given script.
155
But I think in my head, I have this default list of conversation starters.
156
So the call wouldn't get awkward.
157
Hey, where are you at?
158
What time is it?
159
Are you tired?
160
Your hair looks nice.
161
I like your shirt.
162
Basic socializing stuff.
163
Can idols end the call if they want to?
164
No. Idols are not allowed to end the call unless they're told to.
165
That's crazy.
166
That's like, give me your money and don't talk to me.
167
That's crazy.
168
Can you ask an idol literally anything?
169
You can literally talk to them about anything.
170
If you have something to say to them, if they did something wrong, you can scold us on the spot.
171
No one's stopping you for doing that.
172
This happens surprisingly often and there's no regulations on it.
173
It's going to be an awkward phone call, but yeah, you can do it.
174
Have you ever had to pretend you understood something when you had absolutely no idea what was happening?
175
A lot of times the room is loud.
176
We're right next to each other and I can't hear properly.
177
And with video calls, the signal might be bad.
178
I would say 40 % of the time, I couldn't hear you and I would pretend to hear you.
179
You know, maybe like look at your face, try to puzzle the conversation together.
180
I haven't been caught doing that though.
181
Yeah, 40 % of the time, i couldn't hear what you're saying can you take breaks whenever you want technically yeah you can
182
but that's going to be very selfish of you you know
183
people are going to be waiting for you to go pee
184
so just pee before you go in to the call anyways
185
hope you guys learned something today tell me in the comments

What You'll Learn from This K-Pop Fan Call Video

This clip is a goldmine for language learning—especially if you want to practice real-world conversation skills. You’ll pick up how to explain complex processes (like fan call logistics) clearly, use casual storytelling phrases (“Yep, classic capitalism”), and handle transitions between topics smoothly. Plus, it’s perfect for speaking practice since the speaker uses natural, conversational English that’s easy to mirror.

Listen For These Sounds: Connected Speech & Reductions

Pay attention to how the speaker links words and shortens phrases—key for sounding natural. For example, “what actually is” becomes “wha-tac-tu-al-ly is” with soft linking, and “they’re not promoting” reduces to “they’re nuh pro-mo-ting.” You’ll also hear “gonna” (instead of “going to”) and “wanna” (instead of “want to”), common reductions in everyday speech. These small sounds make a big difference in fluency!

Say It Like a Native: Rhythm & Stress

To master the speaker’s tone, focus on stress and rhythm. Notice how words like “memorable,” “operation,” and “permanent” have stress on the second syllable. The speaker also uses pauses to emphasize key points—like after “But on the other side of the screen, it's a completely different world.” Try the shadowing technique: play a short clip, pause, and repeat it immediately, matching the speed and stress. This helps train your mouth and brain to use natural English rhythm. With practice, you’ll start sounding more confident and conversational—just like the speaker!

Whether you’re into K-pop or not, this video is a fun way to boost your English skills. Grab your phone, hit play, and start shadowing—you’ll be amazed at how quickly you progress!
