Hello.
2
Welcome back to my Slow English Podcast.
3
This podcast is for intermediate English listeners.
4
Today, I will talk to you about my first solo trip.
5
My first time traveling alone.
6
The first time I ever traveled alone was when I was 18 years old.
7
I booked my ticket to Tulum, Mexico.
8
And I remember being so nervous and scared.
9
My family was also nervous for me.
10
But I took my flight to Tulum and I had a great time.
11
It was so much fun.
12
It was a trip I will remember my whole life.
13
Because it was the first trip alone.
14
that I ever had.
15
It was the trip that made me feel like I could do anything and go anywhere in the world.
16
I saw the stunning beaches in Tulum
17
and the breathtaking views of the cenotes.
18
I saw one of the seven wonders of the world,
19
and it was the Chichen Itza.
20
After making lots of friends and having lots of wonderful experiences,
21
is I started planning my next trip.
22
I started planning my trip to Costa Rica.
23
I went to Costa Rica when I was 19 years old.
24
I traveled to Tamarindo and I saw the most beautiful sunset
25
I have ever seen.
26
Till this day.
27
I also took surfing lessons.
28
And after that, I traveled to another city.
29
I went to Manuel Antonio
30
and there I volunteered at a hostel for one full month.
31
I like volunteering at places because you can stay in a place
32
near the beach, near monuments, somewhere beautiful for free.
33
I had to clean the bathrooms and clean the kitchen and keep the rooms tidy.
34
I also worked at reception from time to time.
35
Have you ever volunteered somewhere?
36
Maybe at a hostel, a dog shelter, maybe at a farm?
37
While I was volunteering in Costa Rica,
38
I saw the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen.
39
And I made two very good friends.
40
They were a French couple.
41
One of my friends is actually the girl who tattooed me.
42
She is a very good artist.
43
A very talented artist.
44
And my other friend I met in Costa Rica introduced me and showed me scuba diving.
45
I love scuba diving, so it was a very special moment for me.
46
They will always be two very special friends for me.
47
After my trip to Costa Rica, I couldn't wait.
48
I started planning my next trip.
49
I had always wanted to travel to Thailand ever since I was a little girl.
50
I don't know why, but I always have loved Thailand.
51
But I think it's because my name is Tyana and people call me Thai.
52
So when I was little and I heard about a country named Thailand,
53
like Tiana, I was determined to visit and see it someday.
54
I also have always loved elephants.
55
I have always loved watching videos of elephants and drawing elephants,
56
and Thailand has elephants.
57
So I had two very good reasons or motives to travel to Thailand.
58
Is there any place you have always wanted to visit?
59
And is there any specific reason why you want to visit there?
60
So I started planning my trip to Thailand.
61
And I decided to go two days before my birthday.
62
I wanted to spend my birthday alone.
63
So I booked my ticket for November 19th,
64
two days before my birthday.
65
My family was so nervous for me.
66
Thailand is so far away from Mexico.
67
But I had made up my mind.
68
I was going to Thailand.
69
To my land.
70
So I took one small backpack and my 52 hour flight to Thailand.
71
I was so nervous, but the moment I stepped off the plane,
72
I began to feel the nervous excitement.
73
I ordered a grab.
74
A grab is like Uber but in Asia.
75
So I ordered a grab
76
and I went to my It was around 12 p.m and I was a little bit lost.
77
So I asked for directions.
78
I asked, do you know where this hostel is?
79
And this one very kind man saw I was lost and he gave me a ride to my hostel.
80
He was a very kind person, and that was a very nice gesture.
81
The next days, I met so many nice people,
82
and nobody knew it was my birthday.
83
It felt strange, but also really cool.
84
Would you ever spend your birthday alone?
85
I spent three months traveling through Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
86
Vietnamese food is incredible.
87
What country has had the best food you have ever tried?
88
I loved the Vietnamese people.
89
They were always singing karaoke,
90
and they were always smiling.
91
Cambodia's beaches were pristine.
92
They had some very interesting foods.
93
I will always remember my trip to Asia.
94
Then, after my trip, I came back to Mexico.
95
I celebrated birthdays and Father's Day and I head out to travel again.
96
I went to Portugal.
97
I volunteered at a hostel in Portugal near Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. in Cascais.
98
There, I worked with four other people.
99
Two from Argentina, one from Ecuador, and one from Brazil.
100
They became some of my closest friends.
101
They were all so kind and special.
102
I had the best time in Portugal.
103
The work, though, was hard, very difficult.
104
I had to work long hours and hard shifts.
105
But the hostel was right next to the beach,
106
so I could swim every day.
107
But Portugal has freezing ocean water.
108
It was the Atlantic Ocean.
109
So, the first time I swam in Portugal,
110
I couldn't feel my hands or toes or face.
111
I was freezing cold, but I felt so refreshed.
112
After that, I decided I would go in every single day. And so I did.
113
Even when I was super sick,
114
I had a fever and a cold and a cough.
115
I still would go in the freezing ocean every single day.
116
Do you enjoy swimming in cold water or do you prefer to swim in warm water?
117
I had some of my favorite memories in Portugal.
118
Then I went back to Mexico.
119
I stayed home for a while to spend time with my family.
120
Then I started planning my next trip.
121
I took a flight to Cancun in Mexico.
122
Specifically to a city or town named Acumal.
123
It is the city of turtles.
124
And guess what I was going to do there?
125
Save the turtles.
126
So, I went to volunteer with the turtles.
127
At the turtle sanctuary, we looked after and took care of the mama turtles and the baby turtles.
128
We had to protect the eggs from different predators or even people.
129
We also made sure nobody had bright lights on
130
because bright lights can confuse the turtles.
131
The baby turtles can think the lights are the moon. And that is dangerous.
132
So, we only use red lights.
133
We also took care of the mama turtles.
134
We made sure nobody bothered them.
135
The mama turtles need to feel safe.
136
They need to feel safe because they need to lay their eggs.
137
We worked long hours at the Turtle Sanctuary from 11 p.m to 6 a.m.
138
I was always exhausted.
139
And I had to teach English to my students.
140
So, I was very tired all the time.
141
But it was totally worth it.
142
It was an unforgettable experience.
143
To help the turtles and make some really good friends.
144
But, a funny story, my ex-boyfriend didn't get along with one of the other volunteers.
145
They would always have problems and fight.
146
So, we were kicked out of the turtle sanctuary.
147
We had to leave.
148
But once we left, I went back home.
149
And I have been home ever since.
150
I am planning my trip to Brazil next week,
151
and I am very excited to start traveling again.
152
Where was your first trip?
153
What made it special? Have a lovely day.
