Drop -down slicers in Power BI, they were always kind of ugly.
2
However, now since the October 26th release, we can make them look like this.
3
Pretty amazing, with all different kinds of UX components and formatting options to make them really, really, really nice.
4
Now, in this video, we're going to explore this new drop -down slicer.
5
Let's dive in.
6
Now, almost every
7
Power BI report has one, a drop -down slicer.
8
It's just because they are so space -efficient and easy to set up and easy to use.
9
However, we just never had many formatting options
10
but now in the october 26 release we finally got what we were asking for for many many years
11
so we got many formatting options and many ux components
12
that we can add to our slices now let's have a look over here
13
i have a report with three of these new drop down slices
14
and when i open them up it already looks straight away a lot better
15
and we have really cool little ux components like show selected first for example
16
if I now make a selection I can toggle this on
17
and you see all of the selected ones go at the top we have a search box
18
that we can completely form
19
it like we like it to look like we can have little images inside of it
20
and you see also what is selected super super useful
21
so as you can see pretty amazing let's go over some of the key functionalities
22
and how to make them look nice let me just start from scratch
23
and delete the one that exists for the different countries
24
and I'm going to start with a new list slicer
25
which is still a preview visual all right so I'll make sure
26
that it's turned on I'm going to put it over here in between the different slicers
27
and I want to have country on that slicer okay now
28
that just gives me a standard list however now I want to turn
29
that into a drop down
30
and you see in the formatting options there there's a toggle for drop down
31
and actually from scratch it already looks quite okay however I want to nicely blend it in with the background
32
so I'm going to go over here to size and style
33
and turn the background off
34
and over here I can go for a different color for example purple let's also make
35
it a little bit smaller and over here I'm just going to capitalize this country now
36
that looks quite okay however
37
now I want to have little images right in front of each country the country flag okay
38
now to set this up it's really easy we just have to go over here to image
39
and then here we have image for all the states i select over here select from data
40
and now we just need a field that contains all of the image urls
41
or measure now in my case i have a measure
42
so i'm gonna look for it which is this one over here image flag
43
and i can just drag and drop it onto that field
44
and basically that's already it now of course this doesn't look
45
so good so here we see we have image fit
46
which we can set to fit and then it already looks a little bit better
47
but of course we can fine tune it even further so
48
if we go a little bit further down then you will see here layout
49
and here we have the image area size now
50
if we put this to 10 already looks much better
51
and also here we have things like gap
52
so maybe we want to increase that a little bit further
53
and we have also padding
54
so i don't want it to ignore the padding okay
55
now this is already pretty cool we have now images inside of our drop -down slicer however there's
56
so much more there are really a lot of formatting options
57
now it is too much to go over every single option however let's just focus on the main ones okay
58
now i'm going to go back now one
59
that i'm really excited about is
60
that we now have a lot of control over how this
61
drop down actually looks like now we have of course things like the shape
62
and the padding however we also have size
63
so we can now make this drop down wider than the actual input box right
64
so if we set this width to let's say 500
65
if i now open it up you see it's much wider
66
and that is really really helpful now i'm going to put it back to what it was 300.
67
now another thing that i'm super excited about is
68
that we have now pills
69
that show what is actually selected now this was not possible before before
70
it just said well you have multiple items selected not very helpful
71
and then you have to well click on the drop down to see what is actually selected
72
now this has changed let's go over here to a slicer let's first make sure
73
that we can have a multi -select
74
so i'm going to go over here to slicer settings turn off single select then open it up
75
and i'm going to select a few countries just like this okay now you see we have now belgium canada
76
and when it doesn't fit anymore plus one so and
77
if we have even more plus two all right so
78
if i would make this wider wider wider then we see everything
79
that would still fit okay so this is really nice
80
and of course everything every little component we can format there are really a lot of formatting options now in this case
81
These would be the selection pails.
82
And let's say we want to have that little cross in red.
83
Then we can just go here to the dismiss button and make it red like this.
84
We have also the option to change the shape, the padding, the text, the border, the background, all for just these little pails.
85
And that is what is really nice about this drop -down slicer.
86
We have a lot of control about the formatting of every little piece inside of that drop -down slicer.
87
Now, instead of showing the items that are selected, we can also do the inverse we can actually also clear our selection first
88
and then go over here to slice and settings make sure
89
that we have a select all option and now if i select select all and start deselecting countries
90
then it says not australia and so the inverse okay so
91
that is also pretty cool okay now i'm going to clear selection again now
92
if you think oh
93
it is a little bit too busy here on the left
94
hand side let's put these selection boxes maybe on the other side possible i'm gonna go over here to
95
the selection icon here we have the layout position is currently on the left
96
but i want it to be on the right okay go back
97
now we have it on the right inside as you can see there are just
98
so many formatting options now let me show you another one let's go back to our slicer
99
i'm going to first clear the selection again
100
and now let's go over here to the formatting options where we have show selected first okay now
101
if you turn this on and then go back to your drop down
102
and you have a selection
103
and you see this is a pretty long list
104
then it might at some point be a little bit difficult to see what is actually selected
105
so with this button we can put everything to the top
106
so if i now select canada you see boop it goes there to the top
107
and of course that show selected first button there are formatting options for it
108
so if we go over here to formatting then show selected first we have here button
109
and let's let's make it purple okay
110
and you see oh all right now let me show you one more
111
we can also format the search box now you know how you can go to your slicer
112
and then do ctrl f to show a search box
113
and there we have it now i had to do it a few times before
114
it actually popped up however now it's there
115
and we have of course also formatting options for that search box
116
so over here we could for example give it a different background color
117
so maybe we want to have it in purple
118
and let's apply a little bit of transparency to it with an accent bar maybe also in darker purple
119
and if we then go back boom looks amazing okay
120
so of course we can make
121
it look much much better however the main point is you can now format every little thing inside of
122
that drop down slices so it got way way better than what we had before
123
so from now on your drop down slices can look much
124
much better all right good play around with it let me know what you think put
125
it in the comment section below thank you again for watching and see you in the next video.
