Shadowing Practice: 21 Lessons I Learned on My First Bike Tour - Cycling Tour Tips - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
Hello, I'm BeelineFox and my first tour was going from the coast of Florida to the coast of California.
2
It's about 5,500 kilometers in 74 days.
3
In this video I'm going to share 21 lessons I learned on that tour.
4
Lesson number one is to have clear water bottles.
5
I started that trip with these black and white ones
6
that I couldn't see through and I'd be constantly forgetting which ones are full or empty.
7
But when they're clear you instantly know at a glance how much water you have.
8
Number two is one of these snap strap things for when I was wearing pants.
9
It just saves them from rubbing up against the chainring and getting them dirty.
10
And plus you don't want to get a tear in them.
11
Next is earplugs.
12
Super important if you're in a campground.
13
There's bathroom doors and people walking around in flip-flops all hours of the night.
14
And on top of that I'll add an eye mask
15
so you can sleep in past sunrise or have a siesta in the middle of the day.
16
Next lesson was to get a good quality hand pump.
17
I started with a cheap one and it didn't have a gauge
18
and I'd just be guessing like what my tire pressure was
19
which is not what you want to be doing when you're fixing flats on the side of the highway.
20
And if it comes with a mount too that's a real treat.
21
Lesson number five is more of a happy accident than a lesson
22
and it's that you don't need a $5,000 bike to do a tour like that.
23
I did it on a 90s bike that's probably older than me with entry-level gears and brakes.
24
Not saying that to brag, I was just ignorant enough to try it, and I had a pretty good time.
25
Okay, next is to get some good quality straps.
26
You don't want bungee cords or ropes, because straps will still have a bit of give like a bungee, but they're going to click into your rack, and they're going to be nice and sturdy,
27
and nothing's going to be bouncing around.
28
Next lesson was to bring a microfiber rag, perfect for wiping down electronics or your phone,
29
I also carried another to wipe down the bike when it got dirty, or my helmet or handlebars, anything like that.
30
Not so much a lesson, but these Keen sandals were another happy accident.
31
You can wear them pretty much anywhere.
32
You can get them wet.
33
They work great on the flat petals.
34
The only con, I guess, is that they give you a really comical tan line.
35
Next lesson is a packing lesson.
36
What I started with was just throwing everything in these panniers, you know, loose items, and you just got stuff in the bottom.
37
And if you've toured before, you know how much of a nightmare it is to be reaching in to your pannier
38
and it just feels like an empty abyss of just random stuff when you're just looking for one thing.
39
So the solution that I kind of go with now is to have only like two
40
or three items in your bag and that means just putting things in other bags.
41
So this is my clothes
42
and it's just one of these like kind of mesh bag things
43
and it's just all my shirts and whatever but that's one item
44
and then in this I have my first aid kit and then
45
like toiletries so that's three bags in this pannier and
46
if I need one thing like say I want my socks it's not as easy
47
if you're really good maybe you can dive in and grab your socks but not me.
48
So you take this out, grab your socks, you need first aid kit, you reach in there, you grab that.
49
So you can kind of optimally get anything
50
and it'll save you a lot of headache
51
when you get to a campground and you're hungry and who knows what you need from your bag.
52
So that's the lesson there.
53
Lesson 10 is to look into travel insurance with your credit card.
54
Sometimes they offer a week or two for free which will save you a bit of money.
55
Next one is to carry small denominations of cash because places like campgrounds can be cash only, so it's best to be prepared.
56
Alright, next one is regarding food, and it's to not carry more than you need to.
57
I remember carrying a can of soup through Texas Hill Country for like five days, just because I didn't want to eat it, and it's not like I was in the middle of nowhere yet.
58
There was still a grocery store or a gas station i was hitting every day
59
and i could have just got it there so the lesson
60
or solution here is eat your heavy stuff as quickly as possible
61
and if you can get it in the next town get it there
62
and don't be carrying it like a pack mule lesson 13
63
is to take the scenic route sure you're going to suffer a bit more
64
but you can trust me that you're not going going to remember the flat highway.
65
Next one is always a constant battle, but I try to be as strict as possible now with what I put in the handlebar bag,
66
because this can turn into a rat's nest pretty quickly.
67
This is mission control, right?
68
So you've got like everything you need and is valuable in here.
69
Passport, wallet, earbuds, external battery,
70
electronics, the GoPro, cords, I've got some cliff bars and then I got wipes and hand sanitizer.
71
So there's room to grow because you're going to get random papers
72
and garbage and it's just going to all fill up pretty quickly. So
73
keeping this minimal right off the bat is kind of a good way to make sure the chaos doesn't get too crazy.
74
So this one's if you're flying with your bike.
75
Obviously you're going to package it up and tape the top.
76
That's pretty straightforward but what can be a good idea is to reinforce the rest of the box
77
so do a couple strips down the bottom where there's the fold
78
and then my buddy Ben showed me you can even reinforce the handles so those don't tear.
79
But yeah, I learned this one the hard way when I arrived in Toronto.
80
My box came out on the belt and I was just like, uh, whoops.
81
Excuse me sir, can I ask you a weird favor?
82
Okay, next lesson is to document your trip whether it's writing or photography or videography like I prefer.
83
Just make sure you do it because it's all going to be one big blur in the end.
84
Okay, This one's one of the more important ones, and it's just to realize that on a bike tour, you're gonna get hangry.
85
There's gonna be stuff going on and stuff going wrong, and you're not gonna have eaten for, I don't know, four or five hours.
86
So the best thing you can do is just bring lots of snacks
87
and just think of how good that meal's going to taste when you finally get it.
88
Alright, next lesson is wet wipes.
89
Whether you've been working on your bike or you're cleaning utensils, they come in handy for pretty near everything.
90
I even found them useful for like at the end of the day
91
when you need some sort of like a shower you don't have access to water, you can kind of wipe yourself down with a couple of these.
92
It's not super nice, but it does the trick.
93
There can be quite a distance between two cities, so when I'm in one, I like to stop at a bike store even if I don't really need anything.
94
Like today, I might get them just to tighten the headset a bit and have a general look.
95
But the people there also have good information about roads in the area, so they can tell you where you should or shouldn't go.
96
Another important lesson is to immerse yourself in and the culture and foods of whatever town or country you're visiting.
97
It can be overwhelming and exciting, but it's all part of the experience.
98
Alright, last lesson, and maybe one of the more important ones, is to be fully prepared, yet go with the flow.
99
I never try to get too bogged down now, like planning out my itinerary weeks in advance, because things are going to change, you're not going to make it that far a certain day,
100
and it's all gonna go to waste.
101
So what I like to do is just plot out points of interest along the route, and then wherever I end up for the night, that's where I end up.
102
So yeah, like, that's the 21 lessons.
103
Hopefully some of those work for some people.
104
I got some things to do.
105
I'm gonna go get some groceries, and then I gotta get going.
106
So thanks for watchin'.
107
Get the trunks, yeah.
108
you

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
