Let me start with a question.

Let’s Talk About Favorite Books: A Real-Life English Practice Scenario

Imagine chatting with a friend over coffee, sharing stories about the books that changed your life. That’s exactly the warm, conversational vibe of the video—perfect for practicing everyday English. You’ll hear how to talk about when you started loving reading, why certain books matter, and even tips for making time to read. It’s the kind of dialogue you’d have in real life, making it easy to apply what you learn to your own conversations, whether you’re prepping for IELTS speaking practice or just want to chat more confidently.

Useful Chunks & Collocations to Memorize

  • Press the pause button on life – To take a break from a busy routine (e.g., “Reading helps me press the pause button on life”).
  • Lost in the story – Completely absorbed in a book (e.g., “I was so lost in the story, I forgot to eat”).
  • Full of deep meaning – Having important, thought-provoking ideas (e.g., “The short story is full of deep meaning”).
  • Make [something] a habit, not a chore – Turn an activity into something regular and enjoyable (e.g., “Try to make reading a habit, not a chore”).
  • Bridges to other worlds – Ways to connect with new experiences (e.g., “Books are bridges to other worlds”).

Your Shadowing Challenge: Speak Like a Native

Ready to practice? The shadowing technique is a great way to improve English pronunciation and fluency. Here’s your task: Play a 30-second clip from the video, pause it, and repeat it out loud—mimicking the tone, speed, and stress of the speaker. Focus on phrases like “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly” to nail the rhythm. For extra practice, use a shadowing site to record yourself and compare it to the original. This “shadow speech” method trains your mouth to move like a native and helps you remember natural phrases. Do this daily, and you’ll notice your speaking sounds more confident in no time!

Whether you’re into Harry Potter, The Little Prince, or something else, talking about books is a great way to practice English. So grab a book, start chatting, and don’t forget to try that shadowing challenge—your future self will thank you!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
