Grammar & Expressions in Context

In her speech, Selena utilizes several key grammatical structures and expressions that can enrich your English language skills. Here are a few noteworthy examples:

  • First and foremost: "I don't like being honest with press and interviews." This structure emphasizes her preference, illustrating how you can express opinions effectively.
  • Adverbial clauses: "If I have, if I'm doing something because I love it, I should do it because I love it." Here, she uses conditional clauses to convey her thoughts on passion and dedication, which can help improve your ability to articulate complex ideas.
  • Direct address: "Thank you... you inspire me to be better." Notice how she engages directly with her audience, a practice essential for developing speaking skills and showing confidence in conversations.

Incorporating these structures into your own speaking will enhance your fluency and offer additional tools for IELTS speaking practice.

Common Pronunciation Traps

While following along with this video, you may encounter certain words and phrases that can pose pronunciation challenges. For example:

  • Words with subtle sounds: "critics" may be pronounced differently depending on regional accents. Pay attention to how Selena enunciates this term to improve your English pronunciation.
  • Connection of sounds: Phrases like "stronger than ever" can often be pronounced quickly, leading to slurred words. Practice shadowing her delivery to enhance your fluency.
  • Vowel sounds: Words such as "believe" and "life" may feature vowel sounds that differ in other dialects. Focusing on these nuances can greatly assist in improving your pronunciation.

By practicing these elements through shadowing, you will not only improve your overall speaking ability but also gain confidence when using English in various contexts.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
