1
Hello.
2
Come in and take a seat.
3
Oh, thanks.
4
Good.
5
And how can I help you?
6
Well, I'd quite like to join this international social club, and I was hoping you could help me.
7
Yes, no problem.
8
Let me just get the form up on my screen, and I'll fill in your details.
9
Let's see...
10
Yes, here we are.
11
OK, the first thing we need is your name.
12
Jenny Fu.
13
That's F-double-O.
14
OK, great.
15
And can you tell me how old you are, Jenny?
16
I'm 21.
17
Great.
18
And how long have you been here in Australia, by the way?
19
I arrived just last month, two weeks before the start of the academic year, just to sort things out and settle in a bit.
20
Good idea.
21
Where are you from originally?
22
I'm from Kuala Lumpur.
23
That's where I was born and brought up.
24
So, you're Malaysian, are you?
25
That's right.
26
Though I lived in the United States for a couple of years when I was a teenager.
27
We went there for my father's job.
28
Right.
29
And can you tell me your current address, please?
30
Sure.
31
Just at the moment I'm lodging with a family at 13 Anglesey Road in Bondi.
32
Okay, let me just type that in.
33
Uh, how do you spell Anglesey, by the way?
34
It's spelled A-N-G-L-E-S-E-A.
35
Thanks.
36
That's quite a long way from the city centre, isn't it?
37
Is it a problem getting into the city centre?
38
Not really, because the buses are good and it's a nice, quiet area to live in.
39
That's true.
40
So I guess you must have a cell phone number you can give me
41
so we can keep you informed of events and so on?
42
Yes.
43
Let me just have a look.
44
It's a new one, so I haven't learned the number yet.
45
Ah, here it is.
46
It's 040-422-9160.
47
040-422-9160.
48
Okay, good.
49
And you like the family you're living with?
50
Sure.
51
They've got a little boy who is quite noisy, but he's really no trouble.
52
Fine.
53
Now, let's see, what's next?
54
Yep.
55
Can you tell me what you do?
56
I mean, are you working or studying?
57
Well, at the moment I'm doing a temporary job with a company here in Sydney.
58
I'm an economist, in fact.
59
OK.
60
And how long do you think you'll be here in Sydney?
61
At least a year.
62
I may look for work here afterwards.
63
Great.
64
Now, you want to join the International Social Club, and it will be good to know a bit about your free time interests as well.
65
What do you like doing?
66
Well, I'm quite musical, and I really enjoy singing.
67
Back home I sang with a band, just, you know, for fun.
68
But for me, what I like best is dancing.
69
You know, the modern sort?
70
I really love it.
71
So, how are you getting on here?
72
I mean, your level of English is better than most people who come from overseas to work, and you've got a really nice American accent,
73
so I don't suppose you have any communication problems in the office, though you might find some of our Australian slang more difficult to understand.
74
Well, a bit.
75
But I haven't met that many Australians yet, outside of work, I mean.
76
Right.
77
But could you tell me a bit about the International Club, now I've joined?
78
Sure.
79
We've got, let's see, currently about 50 members, but people join all the time, so I should think that figure will go up.
80
Last year we had 30 members, and the year before just eighteen, so we're growing and getting better known.
81
I reckon that at this rate next year we'll have about eighty.
82
And does the club hold regular meetings?
83
Yes, every second Thursday evening, in fact, so a couple of times a month.
84
Though, of course, when you start making friends, you'll be getting together with them more often than that, I guess.
85
The next meeting will be next Thursday, if I'm not mistaken.
86
Uh, yes, that's Right.
87
And what happens when the club meets?
88
I mean, what sort of things are organised?
89
The usual thing is for one of the members to give a little presentation about where they're from, their customs and so on.
90
But from time to time they do other things.
91
Outings to places around Sydney, or meeting up to eat together in a restaurant, or go to a concert together, or something like that.
92
OK, that sounds fun.
93
And the members aren't just people from other countries?
94
Non-Australians, are they?
95
No, not at all.
96
The main point of the club is to give people like
97
you the chance to mix in more with people from this country, people of all ages.
98
You'll find us very friendly.
99
I think the contact has a positive effect on visitors to this country.
100
And, in fact, it affects us locals positively as well.
101
You know, it's a sort of intercultural experience for everybody.
102
And of course, you should get the chance to do all sorts of activities with other members of the club
103
if you want to.
104
It's not just for talking.
105
And hopefully you'll make friends with people who have similar interests.
106
It sounds great.
107
I'm really looking forward to the first meeting.
108
Good afternoon.
109
My name's Debbie Green, and I'm going to give you a short but hopefully interesting introduction to working at this hospital.
110
I'll start with some guidelines about nutrition and fitness
111
because a hospital environment can be stressful and so we always encourage our staff to stay fit and have a healthy lifestyle.
112
So just a few tips first.
113
As you know, the key to good health is eating what we call a balanced diet.
114
Many people don't do this, however.
115
For one thing, they don't eat enough fruit and vegetables or home-prepared food.
116
When you feel hungry, it's often too easy to grab something quick because you're tired or busy.
117
Cooking a healthy meal takes longer, and this is often why people live on sandwiches
118
and fast food instead please don't fall into this unhealthy trap of course you have to do a little exercise
119
and keep fit as well i know you'll have a lot of work
120
and may not have time to join a gym
121
but consider how often you take the lift rather than the stairs
122
or how often you drive rather than walk health-wise it may
123
just be a question of doing things differently rather than starting
124
a very active sport in fact being generally active is much
125
healthier than doing lots of exercise just occasionally as you know
126
this can be as risky for your heart as being inactive
127
as long as you do at least an hour's exercise a day
128
and some of you will do more than that at work you'll find
129
that you don't lie awake at night worrying about the next day
130
and that's the main advantage of exercise remember this is a hospital
131
and you are supposed to be the healthiest people here moving on to health
132
and safety I want to point out that it's quite okay to take a break any time that you're not busy.
133
We know that when there's an emergency, you may have to miss that cup of tea or coffee in the canteen or wherever you go.
134
But generally, you shouldn't work for more than three hours without a break.
135
Otherwise, your attention levels will drop and you could then make a careless mistake.
136
Another important issue is hygiene.
137
You're all trained to clean your hands at work but remember
138
that germs can live for a long time so please make sure
139
that you don't leave even a small amount of rubbish around.
140
There are brooms in the cupboards so use them.
141
We do have cleaners but they aren't always here
142
when you need them I'm afraid and a little dirt can soon build up.
143
Now, as you're all new, I'm just going to show you a map of the hospital and point out a few key places.
144
Let's start with the recreation centre.
145
At the moment, we're in the main building that's here,
146
and if you go out of the main entrance and just along the main road to the east, you'll find the staff recreation centre.
147
It's this T-shaped building and there's a range of things that you can do here to help you relax.
148
If you get ill, we do have a health centre for all registered employees, and this is directly behind the main hospital building.
149
So if you go out of the back exit, it's just in front of you, and there's a small pharmacy next to it.
150
I'm based here, and I have a few leaflets on things if you want to come and see me.
151
Many of you will be doing shift work, so you might like to go to the 24-hour swimming pool and sauna.
152
They're very close by, and it doesn't cost much money to get in.
153
If you walk out of the front of the main building, there's a road straight ahead of you.
154
Go down that and turn left into Thai Road.
155
You'll see the pool entrance at the end of that road, just beyond the line of trees.
156
We've talked about eating healthily and there's a very useful store nearby
157
that sells a large range of organic products and health food supplements.
158
This is also in front of the main building
159
but this time you need to go beyond the turning for Thai Road
160
and you'll see it on the right-hand corner directly opposite another building.
161
Finally, if you want a healthy meal and you have very little time to get it.
162
Of course there's always the canteen inside the main building but I would recommend a place called Jenny's Restaurant.
163
Leave the front of the main building and head for the roundabout.
164
When you're there, take the second turning on the left.
165
It's just along that road before the trees.
166
You can get a number of excellent dishes here at a reasonable price.
167
Well, I think that's all that's really...
168
Thank you.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Listening to IELTS Bands 5-6.5 #1 | Luyện nghe IELTS" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
