Princess de Lamballe was born in Turin in 1749. She came from the House of Savoy, one of the oldest noble families in Europe. Marie-Thérèse was considered gentle, courteous, and reserved. However, her life was not determined by her own wishes, but by the politics of the European courts.

At the age of 17, her family received a marriage proposal from France.

The intended husband: Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, the Prince of Lamballe, a great-grandson of Louis XIV and heir to one of the largest fortunes in France.

The match was considered politically advantageous, but the young prince already had a bad reputation. He was known for being extravagant and dissolute. Nevertheless, the marriage was approved.

In January 1767, Marie-Thérèse left her homeland and traveled to France. The first wedding ceremony takes place in Turin, without the groom himself, who is traditionally represented. Before their official meeting, however, something unexpected happens. A young man appears disguised as a page and brings her flowers. Charming, polite, and attentive.

Only the next day does Marie-Thérèse learn who stood before her: the Prince of Lamballe himself.

For a brief moment, it all seems like the beginning of a love story.

But the impression doesn't last long. Just a few weeks after the wedding, Louis Alexandre returns to his old lifestyle. He disappears for months, visiting his mistress and leaving his young wife alone. Marie-Thérèse experiences early on how lonely life at the French court can be.

The marriage doesn't even last two years. After only seventeen months, the Prince of Lamballe dies, still young and gravely ill. Marie-Thérèse tries to care for him until the very end, but she cannot save him. At 18, she is already a widow. The loss deeply shakes her, not because of a great love story, but because of the disappointment and shattered hopes of her young life. After his death, she even considers retiring to a convent.

Following her husband's death, Marie-Thérèse withdraws from social life . However, her father-in-law, the Duke of Penthièvre, asks her to stay.

Then, a 14-year-old Archduchess from Austria arrives in France: Marie Antoinette.

She soon meets the Princess of Lambal. The young Dorphin seeks trustworthy people around her, and the quiet, courteous Marie-Thérèse seems ideal. A close friendship quickly develops between the two women.

They spend a lot of time together, write letters to each other, and are soon considered almost inseparable at court. Marie Antoinette is said to have once remarked, "The friendship of Princess de Lambal is the magic of my life." In May 174, King Louis X dies. Marie Antoinette and Louis X ascend the French throne.

According to tradition, they both said, "We are far too young to rule." As queen, Marie Antoinette surrounds herself with people she trusts, and no one is closer to her than Princess de Lambal. She soon appoints her friend as Mistress of the Household, one of the highest positions at court. The decision immediately causes envy and tension.

Many ladies-in-waiting feel slighted. At the same time, the princess receives an enormous salary, while France sinks deeper into financial trouble. For her opponents, she becomes a symbol of an extravagant court life. But Marie Antoinette remains loyal to her friend.

Princess Lambal is closely watched at court. Despite occasional rumors, even many critics consider her loyal.

Honest and unusually free of intrigue, Marie Antoinette trusts her almost blindly.

While France sinks deeper into economic trouble, Wass continues to live in a world of celebrations and pleasures. In the winter of 1776, the queen and her friend attend magnificent balls and go on elegant sleigh rides. A lady-in-waiting later describes the princess as a rose in the snow. Over the years, however, the relationship slowly changes. Marie Therese remains quiet and reserved, while Marie Antoinette increasingly seeks social pleasure.

Instead of the Princess of Lambal, the vivacious Duchess Polinak now more frequently accompanies the queen. But although the two women spend less time together, their inner connection remains unshaken.

At the same time, the mood in France is changing. Anger and distrust of Versailles are growing noticeably. The first revolutionary voices are being raised.

And the Princess of Lambal, too, increasingly comes under scrutiny.

In Paris, inflammatory pamphlets full of rumors and accusations circulated . They claimed she was the queen's mistress and, together with her, was squandering France's money.

The world that Marie Antoinette and the Princess of Lambal knew was now finally beginning to crumble. At the end of the 1780s, France was undergoing a complete transformation. The monarchy was teetering. The revolution began, and the country sank ever deeper into fear, violence, and chaos. Thousands of people died in the coming years through executions, uprisings, and political struggles. For Marie Therese, this period marked a dramatic fall from grace. Just a few years earlier, she had been among the highest-ranking women in France. Now, this very status became life-threatening, for being the queen's closest friend suddenly made her a target.

While many members of the court fled Paris, the Princess of Lambal remained at Marie Antoinette's side. The royal family was now living virtually under house arrest in the Tylerie Palace. The atmosphere in France grew increasingly threatening.

Marie Therese lives in chambers right next to the Queen and tries to support her friend as best she can. She only occasionally leaves Paris to visit her elderly father-in-law, the Duke of Pontevre, at his castle in Vernaud.

During one such stay in Vernaud, Marie Antoinette finally asks her friend not to return to Paris for the time being. The Queen fears for her life. In a moving letter, she writes: "Return at least as late as possible. Your heart would be wounded too deeply.

You would have to shed too many tears for my misfortune. And further, this breed of tiger that plagues the kingdom would feel cruel pleasure if it knew all the suffering we endure." The letter shows how desperate the situation had become.

Despite everything, the royal family tries to maintain a semblance of normalcy for a while . The princess continues to organize small events, plays cards with the queen, and tries to win supporters for the monarchy. At the same time, she becomes increasingly suspicious. She tries to find out who is still loyal to the royal house and who is not.

Many former friends have now left France. Duke Poliak also goes into exile. As a result, public hatred is increasingly directed against Princess de Lambal.

In June 1791, the royal family finally attempts to flee Paris. Their destination is the Austrian border. But the plan fails. In Varen, the family is recognized and taken back to Paris. For the monarchy, this is a A devastating blow. Many French people have now definitively lost faith in the king. Princess Lambal had n't even been informed of the escape plan at first. After its failure, she is frantically traveling through Europe, apparently seeking support for the royal family.

But inwardly, she remains torn. Should she help abroad or stay directly by the side?

Should she remain with the Queen? In the autumn of 1791, Marie Antoinette finally wrote her a letter.

The Princess had to decide: return or abdicate.

When Marie Therese read the letter, she simply replied, "I must live and die with her." Shortly afterward, she returned to Paris. And even before her departure, she put her will in order.

When the Princess de Lambal saw the Queen again, she was shaken. Marie Antoinette appeared aged and gaunt. Exhaustion was reflected in her tired eyes, and her hair was said to have turned completely white, as if the Revolution had aged her by decades in just a few years.

The family now lived under constant surveillance. The few remaining servants had to get used to being watched and living under increasingly strict conditions.

Nevertheless, the Princess de Lambal continued to manage the Queen's household at the Tylerien Palace. At the same time, she still tried to win supporters for the monarchy. But she herself increasingly fell under suspicion. The authorities placed her rooms under surveillance. They suspected she was secretly working against the Revolution. On June 20, 1792, the situation finally escalated. An angry mob stormed the palace. As chaos erupted, the Princess of Lambal stayed by the Queen's side, trying to protect her.

Shortly afterward, the royal family was moved to different locations and eventually imprisoned in the Temple prison, confined to cramped, oppressive rooms.

Just a week after their imprisonment in the Temple, several servants and attendants were separated from the royal family. Marie Antonet desperately tried to keep the Princess of Lambal with her. Weeping, she knelt before her and kissed her hands. But the princess was taken away to La Forsen prison, a grim place ruled by fear and violence.

In Paris, the revolution continued to escalate. Crowds stormed the prisons and set up makeshift people's courts. The prisoners were interrogated, often for only a few minutes. Some were allowed to go, others were handed directly over to the waiting crowds. These days would later be remembered as the September Massacres.

In mid-September 1992, the Princess of Lambal was brought before such a tribunal. Other former members of the court were released. But for the princess, the verdict seemed already decided.

She was interrogated about alleged conspiracies against the revolution, but she declared that she knew nothing of them. Then she was asked to take an oath. She was to swear to freedom and equality, and at the same time, hatred for the king and queen. The princess calmly replied: "I can accept the first part, but not the second, for it is not in my heart." They begged her to take the oath. Perhaps her life could still be saved. But she refused. Instead, she simply said, "I have already sacrificed my life." She probably could have survived if she had disowned her friends. But instead, she was led out into the street, directly into the hands of the crowd. The Princess of Lambal did not die a quick death. Accounts tell that she first collapsed to the ground, severely wounded. Then the people repeatedly beat and stabbed her.

The queen's gentle and loyal friend finally died amidst the chaos of the revolution.

Princess Lambal's body was never found. Her elderly father-in-law desperately searched for her, without success. A year later, Marie Antonette also died, condemned to death by a revolutionary tribunal and executed under the Geotine.
