Creating lesson...
1
Ladies and gentlemen, today in the debate, my fellow opponent has wrongly misunderstood.
2
He believes that by applauding Greta Thunberg, everybody will take action.
3
This is a really wrong misassumption.
4
In your case, Greta Thunberg only knows, the world only knows her name.
5
It doesn't mean that everyone will take action to solve the environmental problems, which I will later prove to you in our team case.
6
Now, I want to give some extension to the definitions.
7
First, the applaud.
8
The applaud is not only support, not only praise or encourage, it also promotes and focuses on that character through mainstream media.
9
By this media, we are sending a message that Greta is a role model.
10
Everybody should follow Greta and everybody should be like Greta.
11
Now, exactly we have to understand what makes Greta so different is her belief.
12
That she believes that each individual cannot make significant changes
13
and she used emotions to actually support her belief in order to achieve her goal.
14
Coming to our debate today, we bring you two arguments.
15
First, it is unjustified to applaud Greta Thunberg.
16
And second, applauding Britta Thunberg creates many backlashes.
17
Now, we have to clarify three factors each every environmental campaign aims.
18
First, awareness.
19
Second, attitude.
20
And third, action, which is the hardest thing to achieve.
21
Awareness has already existed in the 21st centuries.
22
Why?
23
Because people do witness the changes in our daily life.
24
And ice is melting.
25
Toxic, deadly air conditions, those are the headlines New has been covering lately.
26
And awareness right now, right here is not enough.
27
What we actually need is the actions and the attitudes of everyone.
28
Now, to be applauded, I believe that there must be two criteria criteria.
29
First, the right attitude.
30
You have to give the right and balance reactions and encouragement for everyone to join the movement.
31
And second, the right action.
32
Give significant solutions to solve the problem, your goal you are aiming to.
33
What Greta doing doesn't meet this criteria, which proves that it's unjustified to applaud her.
34
Why?
35
Because in terms of attitudes, Greta is widely known for her aggressiveness, and this aggressiveness is putting her and everyone in a blind spot.
36
Why?
37
Because people follow Greta, follow her aggressiveness and doesn't have time to self-evaluating,
38
to actually know and shifting all of the responsibilities to politicians and all the corporations.
39
And people by this make no significant move through the environment.
40
And second, in terms of actions, the message Greta is conveying is not leading to any problem solving actions.
41
Why?
42
Because what people are caring is her name.
43
People caring whether Greta is right or wrong.
44
Who should be responsible for this rather than the solutions to this problem.
45
For all the reasons above, we would not applaud Greta Thunberg.
46
Thank you.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

In the transcript, several key structures highlight effective communication strategies:

  • Complex sentences: The speaker uses complex sentences to present arguments. For example, “In your case, Greta Thunberg only knows, the world only knows her name.” This structure allows for nuanced expression of ideas.
  • Conditionals: The use of conditionals like “if” can be inferred when discussing actions and consequences. This encourages learners to think about conditions and their impacts, essential for advanced English.
  • Defining terms: The speaker clarifies what “applaud” really means, which is a great method to teach vocabulary in context. Understanding definitions leads to better retention and application in real conversations.
  • Presenting arguments: Phrases like “we bring you two arguments” signal how to structure persuasive speech effectively. This is critical for those preparing for IELTS speaking practice.

Common Pronunciation Traps

Listening to and mimicking the speaker can help learners tackle specific pronunciation challenges:

  • Applaud: This word may trip up learners due to the final consonant blend. Practice pronouncing it slowly, focusing on the "d" sound at the end.
  • Environmental: This multi-syllable word often poses a challenge; breaking it down into syllables can help. Try saying “en-vi-ron-men-tal” to improve fluency.
  • Aggressiveness: Emphasizing the middle syllable can be difficult. Practice stressing the “-gress-” part to master its sound.

By focusing on these tricky words and practicing with shadow speech, learners can significantly enhance their english speaking practice skills, leading to a more confident use of the language in real-life discussions. Utilize this debate video to not only learn English with YouTube but also to solidify your skills in an engaging way.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
