33
Okay, let's get started with the podcast.
34
Okay, so a few months ago,
35
my brother came to Vietnam from Canada to visit me.
36
And on that trip, we did a trip to Ha Giang.
37
So it was me, my brother,
38
and my two close friends, Luke and Steve.
39
And before you say, Carter,
40
why would you go to Ha Giang after your brother just came to Vietnam for the first time?
41
That must be really dangerous.
42
But don't worry.
43
He does mountain biking in Canada.
44
He had an international driver's license for the motorbike.
45
and we did some practice in Hanoi before we went to Ha Zang.
46
So don't worry, he had experience and we got practice in first and he doesn't drive like a maniac.
47
He drives very carefully and intelligently.
48
So I wasn't worried.
49
I know he's a smart guy.
50
And anyway, so we started our trip to Ha Zang.
51
The trip was about nine or 10 days.
52
and we started from Hanoi.
53
So Steve, Luke and I have been to Hazang before.
54
Steve especially.
55
He's been maybe like five or six times.
56
So we all have some experience going to Hazang.
57
And after we started our trip from Hanoi,
58
we didn't take a night bus to Hazang.
59
We started from Hanoi and we drove to Ha Zang.
60
So I had my own bike.
61
Luke had his own bike,
62
but my brother and Steve,
63
they both rented their own bikes.
64
This is important for the story.
65
So anyway, we all start the trip from Hanoi and everything is going fine.
66
And then when we get out of the city in Hanoi,
67
my friend Steve, his bike breaks down.
68
It broke down pretty much on like a freeway, like a long road.
69
And it didn't look like there was anywhere around us to fix the bike.
70
So we went to this place.
71
We walked the bike to a place where someone was selling iced tea.
72
And we asked him if there was anywhere close by where we could fix the bike.
73
Because this was outside of the city.
74
Like you look around and there's really not much there.
75
And the guy says, just go down that road about 200 meters and take a right.
76
So we thought, okay, cool.
77
And we started to, well,
78
one person was pushing Steve's bike and we made it to the garage to fix the bike.
79
So we got the bike fixed and we assumed everything was all good.
80
spoiler alert everything was not all good but we'll see why later
81
so anyway we go to a homestay
82
and we're staying there we had dinner had fun had some rice wine
83
and we met a big group of Vietnamese people
84
so we just hung out with them for the night and everything was fun and normal
85
So the next few days we stayed at some different homestays.
86
There's nothing too special about that.
87
So I'll skip to when we went to the Nyokwe River.
88
Now, right before we went to the Nyokwe River,
89
Steve's bike broke down again.
90
So we had to go to a garage to get it fixed.
91
The mechanic had to fix his clutch, like his clutch discs.
92
And I got the mechanics number
93
because this was the second time the bike broke down and I figured it might break down again.
94
So after the bike gets fixed,
95
we make our way to the Nyokwe River.
96
And for anyone who has ever been to the Nyokwe River before,
97
you know how beautiful it is from the top of that mountain.
98
because from there you can see down to the river you can see the turquoise water
99
and the trail that leads to it and the mountains on the other side
100
because the river is like between two mountains in a valley basically
101
and normally you would buy a ticket to go on the boats down in the river
102
But we didn't plan it too well,
103
so we didn't buy a ticket.
104
We just decided we'll go there and then we'll get a ticket or we'll pay them at the bottom.
105
Because that's what we did a few years ago and it was totally okay.
106
Before we went down to the Nyauque River,
107
we took some photos at the top and some videos and we really enjoyed the scenery.
108
I don't often say this word,
109
but it was like breathtaking.
110
It was really, really nice.
111
And after we enjoyed the view,
112
we started to head down to the river.
113
Now, I don't know if you have been to the Nyokwe River before, then you'll know.
114
But for those who have never been there,
115
when you go down to the river,
116
the path is really like winding.
117
and there are a few parts that are really steep and it takes about 20 minutes to get down to the bottom.
118
So anyway, after we got to the bottom,
119
we planned to go on the boat and take a little boat tour.
120
But when we got there,
121
everybody was painting their boats.
122
So we couldn't do any tour.
123
Since we had already driven down there,
124
we figured, okay, let's just enjoy the river a bit.
125
Let's just sit here, hang out,
126
and then we will go back up.
127
So after hanging out for around 20 minutes,
128
we decided to go back up and get some lunch
129
because it was around one in the afternoon at that time and we were starting to get hungry.
130
But then after we got on the bikes to go up the mountain, guess what happened?
131
Steve's bike broke down again.
132
So now we're at the bottom of this mountain at the Nyakwe River and his bike is broken down.
133
There's absolutely no way we could push the bike up because it was a really heavy bike.
134
And even just walking up that mountain with nothing would be a difficult workout.
135
but luckily I had the mechanic's number
136
so I called him I said please come down
137
and help us you know we'll we'll pay you for your time
138
and for your service just please come down and help us
139
because we really really need your help no one in the village by the Nyokwe river could fix our bike
140
So this guy was basically our only hope at getting this bike up the mountain.
141
Now, luckily, he was really nice and he agreed to come down and help us.
142
So after around 45 minutes,
143
he came and it took around three or four hours to fix the bike.
144
And during this time, we were just waiting for him to fix the bike,
145
hanging out, and people were walking by,
146
staring at us, wondering what we were doing.
147
There were cows there.
148
It was a pretty funny scene.
149
It even started to get dark at around like 5.30 or 6.
150
But luckily, he fixed the bike.
151
And so we thanked him.
152
We paid him.
153
and then we got up the mountain and went to our homestay
154
and by that time we were starving because we didn't even eat lunch
155
and so we had like the best dinner one of the best dinners
156
that I think we've all ever had and we were not only really hungry
157
but the food at this homestay was really good as well.
158
So now I'll fast forward to the crazy boat ride.
159
Now we found this boat because we were following the maps
160
that my friend had researched online
161
and it led us to go through these really narrow trails where
162
if you fell to the right then like it would not be good for you
163
because it was quite steep and quite high
164
but after we got through those trails it came to a river where the boat was.
165
Now as soon as they saw us they started to bring the boat towards us.
166
It's more kind of like a ferry for carrying bikes
167
but it's also pretty much just a raft made with bamboo sticks maybe i'm not totally sure
168
and it was moved by manpower like there was a cord there
169
and they would have to pull the cord to move uh the boat
170
or the raft i was a little bit worried
171
because we had our four bikes on it
172
and there were times where water was coming up through the raft
173
and i thought okay i hope it can hold four bikes
174
but anyway it turned out totally fine of course the people knew what they were doing
175
so then after that the next day that's
176
when the really crazy thing happened so after
177
that boat ride we went to our homestay had dinner slept
178
and then the next day we began riding to our next destination
179
so on the way to the next destination we were going down a long road
180
and as we were going i was in the front
181
and i could see something down the road on basically still on the road
182
and so as i kept going
183
and i could see it more clearly i could tell
184
that it was a man next to his bike and it looked like he crashed and so we all drove
185
up to him and when we got to him we could see
186
that yeah this guy definitely crashed it was really bad his
187
helmet was completely like destroyed on this side like scratched
188
and broken he had on his both of his elbows both
189
of his knees his hands basically every like part of his body looked like it had been damaged from this crash.
190
And when he stood up,
191
he got up really slowly and it looked like he had hit his head.
192
So I asked him, do you know what year it is?
193
And he said, I can't really,
194
I don't really know off the top of my head.
195
I don't really know.
196
So if he doesn't know what year it is,
197
it's pretty clear that he had a head injury,
198
probably a concussion or something like that.
199
At this point, we know we have to get him to a hospital.
200
And luckily there was someone
201
driving by in a car and we flagged him down
202
and we asked him where is the closest hospital we need to bring this guy to the hospital
203
because he just had a really bad fall
204
and this guy he said oh okay like get him in
205
the car uh I'll drive him to the hospital we said okay great we we will follow you
206
so I took the guy's bike the guy who fell down
207
and I went with Luke and he went on his own bike
208
so Luke and I followed this car all the way to the hospital
209
and it was around 20 kilometers away pretty far so
210
when we got there there was pretty much no one there because this was a hospital in a really small town.
211
So I walked in, I was looking for someone and I didn't see anyone.
212
Honestly, I just saw a few chickens walking around.
213
So I thought, uh-oh.
214
But as I went further into the hospital,
215
I found some people and I told them like,
216
hey, we found this guy.
217
He fell on the road.
218
He's seriously injured.
219
He hit his head.
220
He's bleeding.
221
Please help us.
222
And the funny thing was,
223
was that they seemed more surprised about how I could speak Vietnamese.
224
And they were saying like,
225
oh, your Vietnamese is so good.
226
And I was saying like, okay, like, thank you.
227
But we have to check this guy out because he,
228
you know, he could be seriously hurt.
229
So that was kind of funny, to be honest.
230
And then we brought him downstairs in this hospital to where the doctor was.
231
And the doctor looked at him, took off his jacket.
232
And we saw that he was more injured than we thought
233
because we couldn't see under the jacket until he took it off.
234
And that hospital didn't have any machines like x-rays to check on him.
235
So the doctor said, we need to send him to a hospital in Kaobang.
236
And there they can see how he is injured.
237
And so we ordered a truck,
238
sent him to that hospital.
239
The truck brought his bike along with himself.
240
and I got his WhatsApp phone number so I could stay in touch with him and help him if he needed anything.
241
So after he got to the hospital
242
and got the x-rays done the next day he told me he had five broken ribs,
243
a punctured lung and a ruptured kidney along with severe cuts and burns on his arm.
244
But anyway, after that, he went back to Canada and everything is all good.
245
So I guess the moral of the story is that when you go to Hazang,
246
just be careful.
247
If it's, you know, don't drive too fast.
248
Be careful of the trucks.
249
Everyone says how dangerous it is because there are so many accidents.
250
but if you just drive carefully stay on the side of the road don't try to pass people on corners
251
or turns or anything crazy like that then you should be okay
252
so that's going to wrap up the story here is the last photo we took on
253
that trip of the four of us together i think it's
254
a great photo it kind of feels like it sums up the whole trip right there just we were tired
255
and uh it had been a crazy week so anyway
256
that is the story of my trip to hazang i hope
257
you guys enjoyed it uh you can write in the comments any experiences
258
or trips crazy things that happened uh write it and i'll try to check it out.
259
But yeah, that's it for this podcast.
260
I will see you in the next one.
261
Goodbye.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
