Hello everyone, my name is Dylan and welcome to a brand new video.
2
If you are new here,
3
hi there, I post fun and entertaining English lessons every single Friday.
4
So today I'm going to be teaching you how to correctly pronounce 80 everyday words in the modern RP British accent,
5
and then you are going to be shadowing or repeating after me.
6
So this is going to be a brilliant way to help you to sound more British in your everyday life.
7
Now then, I've broken these words down into five different categories.
8
Firstly, we have basic simple words that you'll hear being used multiple times per day.
9
Secondly, we have words that are very commonly mispronounced.
10
Thirdly, we have words that contain silent letters.
11
Fourthly, we have British exclusive words,
12
so words that you will hear being used in British English but not really in American English.
13
And last but definitely not least,
14
we have some random words that I wanted to include at the end of the video.
15
So I will read each word four times and whilst you can just listen if you would like to,
16
to get the most from this video I would recommend repeating after me.
17
Now for this step it's important to try and copy exactly how I say it.
18
If you wish to really train your modern RP British accent.
19
Finally, everything we cover in today's video will be included in a free PDF,
20
so that'll be the pronunciation and the definitions,
21
and the link will be in the top comment.
22
You don't have to enter your email address for this,

Why Practice Speaking with This Video?

Learning English can be an exciting journey, especially when you incorporate modern techniques like the shadowing technique. This video, which teaches you how to pronounce 80 daily words in a British accent, serves as an excellent resource for English speaking practice. By repeating the words and phrases after the instructor, you not only enhance your pronunciation but also gain the confidence to use these words in various situations. Engaging with this content allows you to immerse yourself in the rhythm and melody of a British accent, making it easier to integrate into your daily conversations.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Throughout the video, specific phrases and structures emerge that can aid in your overall comprehension and application of the English language:

  • Repetition for Mastery: The speaker emphasizes the importance of repeating each word four times, highlighting a learning technique that many find effective in IELTS speaking practice.
  • Contextual Use of Words: By categorizing the words into everyday vocabulary, mispronounced terms, and British exclusives, the instructor provides a structured approach that can help learners understand context better.
  • Encouraging Active Participation: Phrases such as “try to copy exactly how I say it” motivate learners to actively engage with the material, ensuring they are not just passive listeners but active participants in their learning journey.

Common Pronunciation Traps

Focusing on pronunciation can significantly enhance your accent and clarity in communication. Here are some common pitfalls highlighted in the video:

  • Silent Letters: Words that contain silent letters can be particularly challenging for learners. For example, the word “beautiful” can be mispronounced if learners don’t pay attention to the silent “u”.
  • Vowel Sounds: Words like “water” and “thought” illustrate the nuanced vowel sounds typical in a modern RP British accent. It's essential to practice these sounds to avoid falling into the trap of pronouncing them more like American English.
  • Misused Stress Patterns: Certain words, such as “favourite” and “better,” may not have the same stress pattern as in other English dialects, leading to misunderstandings. Focusing on the specific nuances presented in the video can help solidify these differences.

Overall, this video not only offers a fun way to learn English with YouTube but also equips learners with valuable tools to refine their speaking skills and enjoy the nuances of British English. By practicing these words and using the resources provided, you will enhance your overall speaking ability and confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
