In this vlog, we are back in Taiwan.
2
Two years ago, I came as a solo traveler and could not stop talking about it.
3
This is Wa's first time and there is so much we want to do.
4
We visited a night market, ate delicious food.
5
Oh my god, the food!
6
Taiwanese food is the key to my heart.
7
Like, if you ever want to kidnap me,
8
you could probably lure me in with Taiwanese food.
9
We also visited a few cafes and I think I might have had the best latte of my life.
10
We also had delicious douhua and we even got reservations at the famous A Joy buffet inside Taipei 101.
11
Taipei may be known for its skyscrapers,
12
but the nature that surrounds it and the historic old villages are also worth slowing down to appreciate.
13
If you're planning a trip to Taiwan,
14
I hope this video gives you some ideas on where to stay and what to eat.
15
So let's go back to the day we left LA for Taiwan.
16
The journey begins at LAX where we would fly to SFO for a short layover,
17
then be on our way to Taipei.
18
We flew United Airlines this time and I used my travel credits towards a premium economy seat.
19
The seat had a lot of leg room but it did feel a bit narrow.
20
Here I'm using the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 camera.
21
It has a wide angle lens so I can really show you the space.
22
I'll be vlogging a with this tiny camera throughout the trip
23
so shout out to insta360 for sponsoring this video it made vlogging
24
so fun this trip and it's so small and discreet it's perfect
25
if you're shy about vlogging in public i actually don't think
26
the guy next to me even realized i had a camera out as for the food it was well seasoned
27
but girl the chicken was
28
so dry it almost took me out i watched a few movies struggled to fall asleep
29
but 14 hours later we made it to taipei we stayed
30
at the mgh mitsui garden hotel in the Daan district which had a MRT station right outside.
31
So this hotel was very convenient.
32
It was also very clean and we booked this room with our Amex points.
33
So it was basically free.
34
Am I right?
35
Being close to the MRT is key because it makes getting around very easy.
36
So if it's your first time in Taipei,
37
Daan is a central place to stay to easily explore the city by MRT or by bus or walking.
38
This is a door stop.
39
There were like two, three cards.
40
And then it magnetizes to your phone.
41
Oh, but it opens, you get a mirror?
42
It's a mirror and you get an extra card.
43
It does it?
44
You can try it.
45
No, my phone doesn't.
46
This is so cute.
47
and it's just small like that
48
so you have to get a total of three
49
that first one was corn and then we also got black sesame and peanut oh my god so hot
50
if you want something super sugary and sweet this is not it it just tastes chewy
51
it doesn't taste like they loaded it with sugar just so just so you get addicted to it
52
we got to the night market a bit late
53
so many stalls were closed or starting to pack up
54
so after walking around a little bit we stumbled upon this restaurant the menu was plastered outside the walls
55
and what caught my eye was the chicken rice
56
and soups we ordered a few dishes
57
and in taiwanese fashion it came out quickly and the food was nice
58
and hot when wa and i traveled together we tend to like to eat different things.
59
And what I love about Taiwan are the small portions.
60
You can order a bunch of small dishes for yourself or to share.
61
That way you get to try a little bit of everything.
62
I personally recommend to always order a side of veggies because girl, you are traveling.
63
You better get some fiber in if you know what I mean.
64
I don't know if you guys can hear the audio,
65
but the kitchen started playing Zheng Ho Giao.
66
Okay?
67
I was not expecting to hear Cantonese music on my first day here.
68
That made Juan and I very happy and it really added to the vibes as we were eating dinner.
69
that's good prepare for the popcorn chicken tomorrow
70
that's exactly what I thought about when I ordered this
71
the next morning we got in line for the famous Fuhang soy milk
72
or a classic Taiwanese breakfast the line was long
73
so I decided to get my camera settings ready
74
while we wait I got the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 camera right before this trip
75
so I played around with the settings quite a bit at home to get familiar If you're thinking about getting this camera,
76
these are the settings that I personally like to use.
77
First off, the flip touchscreen is great for vlogging.
78
There are lots of different modes,
79
but the ones that I use the most are photo,
80
video, and pure mode.
81
Pure mode is meant for vlogging in low light,
82
like you saw from the night market,
83
but I also like to use it when I'm indoors,
84
when I know the lighting is not great.
85
It captures so much detail, as you can see.
86
This camera is made in collab with Leica,
87
so you've got these Leica picture profiles to play around with too.
88
I have found that I like to use flat the most.
89
To me, it's easiest to work with when I'm editing.
90
Then I set it to 4K,
91
60 frames per second, but it can go up to 8K as well.
92
Okay, I'm going to try to set this up.
93
This is the pocket printer.
94
So you basically just put this,
95
the camera, into the cage.
96
It just snaps right in.
97
And then this piece goes on here.
98
Then you slide this in.
99
Ta-da!
100
So you go into the settings,
101
Bluetooth, connect the pocket printer.
102
The other day, I took some photos,
103
so I'm going to try to print one.
104
Oh, that's pretty cute.
105
This is so cute to bring on a trip.
106
You can print your photos right away.
107
The quality is so nice.
108
I love it.
109
Fuhang soy milk has been around since 1958,
110
serving classic Taiwanese breakfast, and was featured in the Michelin Guide multiple times.
111
We ordered some of the most popular items like salty soy milk,
112
regular soy milk, and flatbread with egg and yu tiao.
113
I loved the flatbread because it has this soft and chewy texture.
114
If you haven't noticed already,
115
I am a sucker for soft and chewy food.
116
Going from the sweet and savory to this chewy bread.
117
So what do you guys think of this camera so far?
118
I really like it because it makes vlogging so effortless.
119
It's not heavy, so I find myself reaching for it more than my other camera.
120
If you want to get this camera,
121
use my code or check the link in my bio.
122
Yeah, yeah.
123
And after you're finished with breakfast and your heart is calling for some sweets,
124
do not sleep on bonbon.
125
This flan was the best flan I've ever had.
126
Wall wanted some coffee after breakfast,
127
so we stopped by a really cool coffee shop called Noon.
128
The entrance looked like someone's house and it's really easy to miss,
129
so make sure you look for these doors.
130
I kind of loved how mysterious it felt and once we went inside,
131
we were transformed into this beautiful space.
132
Waugh ordered the tasting menu,
133
which I thought was so fancy.
134
It came out in three separate courses,
135
and each one, they explained the thought behind it.
136
I loved the storytelling through coffee,
137
so I highly recommend if you are a coffee lover.
138
Me, on the other hand,
139
I ordered an oat latte.
140
Basic, I know, but I believe in ordering the basics,
141
or should I say classic, items on a menu.
142
And girl, I don't know what kind of oat milk or coffee bean they use,
143
But this was hands down one of the best oat lattes I have ever had.
144
It was smooth and paired with a thin glass cup that they served it in,
145
everything from the way it tastes to the way it feels on my lips were perfection.
146
From the cafe, we took a stroll to Da'an Forest Park.
147
And this park spans over 60 acres,
148
so it was huge and it was the perfect place to enjoy the day outside.
149
I loved seeing all walks of life hanging out in this park from parents with young kids to grandmas and grandpas,
150
the cute dogs, the wildlife.
151
It was so peaceful.
152
What I love about traveling is the way it stimulates my mind.
153
I want to slow down and pay attention to all the little things because when I'm at home,
154
I find myself rushing from one place to the next.
155
Do you guys feel the same way?
156
I would hardly ever stop to take a photo of some flowers, you know?
157
But when I'm traveling, I feel so much more creative and present in the moment.
158
And it nice to see everyone in the park enjoying it as well.
159
It was so wholesome to see.
160
What's that carps?
161
The type of fish?
162
Kind of like koi?
163
Not as fancy as koi but in the same family.
164
It's
165
our favorite type of store.
166
It's the first candela of the trip Wow Wow there's cilantro too Oh wow.
167
Yeah?
168
Mmm.
169
Wow.
170
The cilantro too.
171
Mm-hmm.
172
Oh my god the cilantro.
173
So good.
174
Wow.
175
we made reservations one month in advance for ajoy
176
which is a buffet located on the 86th floor inside of taipei 101 i've heard
177
that this buffet books up quickly so i highly recommend making a reservation
178
and i can see why because when we first walked in the view was stunning and after taking it all in,
179
Wanai went to the bar to grab some cocktails to start the night.
180
Starting with the drinks.
181
It's not for me.
182
Taiwanese fru colada.
183
Oh, this is my type of drink.
184
This is the best drink.
185
Mmm, smells mincy.
186
Let's first go on a tour, shall we?
187
I like to take a lap around the restaurant first whenever
188
I go to a buffet just to see what they have, you know?
189
It can feel a little overwhelming in the best way when you're presented with so many options.
190
I was also a bit overstimulated by the people rushing to grab food
191
because we were one of the first groups to be seated for the dinner service and people were hungry.
192
The aunties and uncles are not playing around, okay?
193
You better stay out the way of their crab legs or else.
194
In case you're wondering, we made our reservations on Klug,
195
so they did charge more compared to what it would cost if I was able to book over the phone.
196
It was a whopping $150 per person,
197
but I heard locals pay around $120 per person for dinner.
198
Although bougie, this was truly a fun experience from the Wagyu station to dim sum to sushi and even the salad bar.
199
Honestly, I did not see one person touch.
200
I mean, it was pretty,
201
but I think we were all a little distracted by everything else.
202
Okay, now I'm gonna have sweet shrimp and strawberry jam.
203
I thought that sounded so unique,
204
so we're gonna give a try.
205
but I can't say I like it.
206
The shrimp with the strawberry jam.
207
Oh.
208
This was delicious.
209
I love the pickles inside.
210
It just melts in your mouth.
211
That is a good soup.
212
So good.
213
What is that?
214
Mushrooms probably?
215
It should be mushrooms, yeah.
216
Finishing off with dessert and a coffee.
217
I have to try the ice cream before I go to try the ice cream before I go.
218
You want to try peanut?
219
Mm-hmm.
220
Oh, it's like peanut butter.
221
Try it.
222
On day three of our trip,
223
we are leaving the hotel for Alishan.
224
It was super early and the hotel had a breakfast buffet
225
so we thought why not we just had buffet the night before
226
but i can never turn down a buffet that's one thing
227
i feel like we don't have enough of in america good
228
quality buffets like where are they i can't seem to find any besides the ones in vegas
229
so
230
if any of you know of good buffets in america please comment them below the dining room may be small
231
but the breakfast assortment here was great it was a good mix of western
232
and asian food over in the corner they had a little
233
station where you can make your own bowl of savory soy milk
234
or rice with a protein
235
so that's where i started i got this it's like a curry oh
236
and then this is a salted soy milk we are having
237
breakfast at a hotel we were supposed to have breakfast somewhere else
238
but this morning i woke up super early i think i have a little bit of jet lag
239
and after i woke up i just decided to look up the bus times for our trip today to alishan
240
and i'm so glad i did
241
because turns out there's only four buses from the chile station
242
that takes you up
243
which means we have to bump up our trip we meant to leave from taipei at around 11
244
but
245
that will turn out to be way too late we have to leave the hotel in maybe about an hour
246
and so we just came downstairs to the hotel buffet breakfast it's 660 taiwan dollars
247
so it comes out to be about like 20 usd
248
and they have so many options they have like western breakfast and taiwanese breakfast
249
after we checked out of the hotel we headed out to
250
taipei main station to buy a high-speed rail ticket from Taipei to Jiayi.
251
Jiayi is the closest stop to Alishan and it was about a one and a half hour ride.
252
You can reserve a spot on the train in advance
253
but you could also just purchase a non-reserve ticket at the station for same day travel.
254
Depending on the time of day,
255
the train could be pretty busy so if you have a lot of luggage,
256
I would recommend reserving ahead of time.
257
Once you get on the train,
258
there is a section where you keep larger suitcases.
259
You can also keep smaller luggage by your feet or on the shelf above your seat.
260
Once we arrived in Jiayi,
261
there was a few options to get to the hotel.
262
We could either take the bus,
263
Uber, or call a taxi.
264
We opted for taking a taxi because the line for the bus was already super long when we arrived.
265
The bus also would have taken two hours because of stops,
266
so we saved ourselves an extra hour by calling a taxi.
267
It was definitely more expensive,
268
around $63 for the taxi ride up the mountains,
269
but this was so worth it because it gave us extra time to explore the village of Fenxihu.
270
We are currently at Fenxihu and this is a very old village.
271
They have all sorts of little restaurants,
272
little shops, and I am not wearing the right outfit.
273
Am I in a trench coat?
274
We dropped off our stuff.
275
We just came right over here because the rooms aren't ready yet.
276
We just came from the city.
277
This is the warmest day of our trip so far.
278
Less than two hours here before the shuttle brings us home.
279
So we are going to go get some food.
280
These are one of the best inventions for purses.
281
It folds down into like a little tiny square.
282
I keep it in my purse so that I can hang up my bag when we get to places.
283
You can even put it on a table or just anywhere you can hook it.
284
Big doggie.
285
He's so cute.
286
Oh yes, first up we got mapo tofu over rice.
287
This is in English, it's tea leaves egg.
288
And in Chinese, it is cha yip jin tan.
289
At first I thought it was like cha yip tan where it's stewed but this is actually pan fried.
290
Oh that is so fragrant.
291
There's a lot of um in Chinese it would be called wok hei.
292
I taste a lot of wok hei.
293
It doesn't even feel like we're at a restaurant.
294
It feels like I went to a like a family member's house.
295
There are lots of bed and breakfasts in this area
296
but we opted for IHG Hotel Indigo
297
because we had amex points to book with this hotel was really nice
298
and luxurious we loved that they had a shuttle service to feng chi hu
299
and alishan so we didn't have to rent a car
300
or call a taxi once we were here since we're up
301
in the mountains it's harder to get around without a car there are buses
302
that run through here though so
303
that is another option then i think the jet lag finally hit us
304
because we took a long nap after we got back woke up just in time for our dinner reservation
305
which which was another buffet.
306
We were so tired at this point and almost didn't make it to the reservation.
307
If you're planning a trip to Taiwan,

In the next vlog, we'll be going to Alishan to see the cherry blossoms.
310
Then we made our way back to Taipei for more city stuff.
311
I got a perm.
312
We explored more night markets,
313
did a bit of shopping in super cute neighborhoods and visited a few more cafes.
314
By the way, if you also want to document your life,
315
I'll have a link for Insta360 below.
316
You can use my code when you check out.
317
They have super cute and fun accessories like this Polaroid printer where you can connect the camera
318
and print your photos right away It's so fun with friends so you can physically share your pictures.

Why Practice Speaking with This Video?

This engaging vlog about traveling to Taiwan provides a lively context for practicing English speaking skills. The speaker shares personal experiences, offering learners an authentic glimpse into travel conversations that include food, accommodations, and navigating the city. By watching and repeating the phrases, you can enhance your fluency and build confidence in your speaking abilities. Using the shadowing technique, you can mimic the natural rhythm and intonation of the speaker, which is crucial for sounding more like a native speaker. Emulating travel-related dialogues can also enrich your vocabulary and improve your ability to express thoughts and feelings in English, making it easier to socialize during future travels.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

In this video, several grammatical structures and expressions stand out that can be beneficial for your English learning journey:

  • Using the present perfect tense: The speaker mentions, โ€œI came as a solo traveler,โ€ reflecting on a past experience that has relevance to the present. This construction can help you narrate personal experiences effectively.
  • Descriptive adjectives: Phrases like โ€œdelicious foodโ€ and โ€œbest latte of my lifeโ€ demonstrate how adjectives can enhance language, making your descriptions more vivid when discussing food or experiences.
  • Conditional statements: The expression โ€œIf you ever want to kidnap me, you could probably lure me in with Taiwanese foodโ€ shows a playful, conditional structure that can add humor and personality to your conversations.
  • Using colloquial language: Phrases like โ€œgirl, the chicken was so dryโ€ indicate familiarity and informality, essential in conversational English. Incorporating such expressions can make your speech sound more natural.

Common Pronunciation Traps

While watching the video, pay attention to certain words and phrases that may present challenges in pronunciation:

  • โ€œFenqihuโ€: This place name might be difficult due to its unique sounds and syllable structure. Practice it slowly, breaking it down into โ€œFen-qi-hu.โ€
  • โ€œTaipeiโ€: The pronunciation may vary depending on accents, so listen closely and mimic the way it's articulated in the video.
  • โ€œdeliciousโ€: This word can often be pronounced too quickly or improperly. Focus on clearly articulating each syllable: de-li-cious.
  • โ€œMRTโ€: The way acronyms are spoken can differ; ensure youโ€™re comfortable with the pronunciation of public transit terminology to navigate conversations about travel.

As you practice using the shadow speech method, let these tips guide you towards meaningful improvements in your speaking abilities. Immerse yourself in videos like this to learn English with YouTube and tackle the nuances of everyday conversation.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud โ€” like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1โ€“2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency โ€” making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
