Why practice speaking with this video?

This vlog gives you a firsthand experience of daily life in Korea through the eyes of Dasha, a content creator who engages with her followers while navigating new environments. By watching her spontaneous interactions, you will not only improve your listening skills but also be inspired to practice speaking English in real-life contexts. Using this video as a resource, you can embark on an effective shadowing technique for improving your fluency and confidence. As you imitate Dasha's speech, you can incorporate her casual yet engaging dialogue into your own practice, making this an excellent choice for IELTS speaking practice and overall English proficiency.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Dasha's speech highlights several key grammatical structures and expressions that are particularly useful for learners:

  • Present continuous tense: Expressions like "I’m filming" and "I’m kind of happy" showcase this tense's effectiveness in conveying ongoing actions and feelings.
  • Casual language and interjections: Phrases such as "Oh my god" and "Yes, girls" create a conversational tone, which is valuable for learners looking to grasp everyday English used in informal contexts.
  • Descriptive adjectives: Dasha describes her experience with words like "amazing," "super hungry," and "cool," illustrating how adjectives can enhance storytelling and engage listeners.
  • Future plans: Sentences like "we are going to rent a car" illustrate how to express future intentions, a key skill for discussing plans or desires.

Common Pronunciation Traps

In the video, Dasha's lively speech introduces some pronunciation challenges that learners may encounter:

  • Vowel sounds: The word "matcha" may be tricky due to its distinctive pronunciation, which is crucial for making your English sound more natural.
  • Contractions: Dasha uses many contractions (e.g., "I'm," "you guys"), which can lead to mishearing if you're not familiar with relaxed speech patterns.
  • Linking sounds: Phrases like "I'm super happy" may feature linked sounds, making it a good opportunity to practice shadow speech to improve your fluency and rhythm.

Utilizing the shadow speak approach, you can engage in repetition, mimicking both the intonation and phrasing used in the video. This will significantly enhance your listening and speaking skills, preparing you for the complexities of English conversation and examinations like the IELTS.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
