1
Hello and welcome to the English Listening Podcast.
2
Have you ever picked up a lucky coin, knocked on wood, or worn your favourite shirt for an important event?
3
Many of us believe in luck in one way or another, but why do people believe in luck?
4
Is it real or is it just something we make up to feel better.
5
Today we are going to explore the science behind luck and why so many people believe in it.
6
First, let's define luck.
7
Luck is the idea that events can happen by chance, either good or bad, without us controlling them.
8
Some people believe in lucky charms, rituals or or even lucky numbers.
9
Others think that luck is just a random part of life.
10
But even though luck seems mysterious, science has some interesting explanations for why we believe in it.
11
One reason people believe in luck is because of psychology.
12
Our brains are always looking for patterns, even when there are none.
13
If we wear a red shirt and win a game, we might think the shirt is lucky.
14
This is called the illusion of control.
15
It makes us feel like we can control random events.
16
In reality, winning the game was probably because of skill or chance, not the shirt.
17
But our brain likes to connect things that happen together.
18
Another reason is something called confirmation bias.
19
This means we remember lucky moments more than unlucky ones.
20
Imagine you find money on the street after wearing your lucky socks you will probably remember that event,
21
but if you wear the same socks and nothing special happens, you forget about it.
22
This makes it seem like your socks bring good luck, even if they don't.
23
Superstitions also play a big role.
24
Many cultures have traditions about luck.
25
In China, the number 8 is lucky because it sounds like the word for wealth.
26
In Western countries, people avoid the number 13 because they think it is unlucky.
27
These These beliefs are passed down through generations, and even people who don't fully believe in them still follow them, just in case.
28
But is there any real science behind luck?
29
Surprisingly, yes.
30
Studies show that people who believe they are lucky often take more risks and are more positive.
31
This confidence can actually lead to better results.
32
A famous study by psychologist Richard Wiseman found that people who considered themselves lucky were more open to new experiences,
33
noticed more opportunities and were generally more optimistic.
34
So, in a way, believing in luck can create real success.
35
Of course, luck is not magic.
36
It is a mix of psychology, chance and attitude.
37
If we believe in luck in a healthy way, it can make us more confident and open to opportunities.
38
But we should also remember that hard work, preparation and good decisions play the biggest role in success.
39
So, do you believe in luck?
40
Whether you do or not, the way we think about luck affects how we live our lives.

Além disso, a variedade de frases complexas (como "the illusion of control makes us feel like we can control random events") treina a fluência no ritmo da fala, evitando pausas desnecessárias.
