1
Hello everyone and welcome to my channel.
2
Today I wanted to make a free video without a script so that you can practice real -life English.
3
I want to tell you the story of how I learned to speak with an American accent
4
and why I decided to speak with an American accent.
5
Of course there are different accents that you can learn, it doesn't have to be British or american
6
but those are the most popular ones
7
so that's why i want to speak about those i'm not really sure why
8
but here in argentina when you are a kid
9
and you are at school you learn british english i'm not
10
sure why it's not popular to learn an american english so
11
when i was approximately 10 or 11 years old I was learning British English.
12
Also at the time I was obsessed with Harry Potter so I wanted to speak like Hermione.
13
I love the British accent because it's really different,
14
it's harder I think to learn than the American English and it's very particular, it's very different and I love to hear
15
and to watch videos of people speaking with a british accent
16
but when i started to be more conscious about my learning process and
17
when i really wanted to learn english i was approximately 14
18
15 years old i really wanted to speak english fluently so i started learning with movies videos,
19
series and I realized that most of the content that you have on Netflix,
20
YouTube, it's with an American accent and also I realized that I liked the American accent more than the British accent.
21
I don't know it's a personal choice but it was my decision
22
and also I realized that you have to choose one
23
if want to get better at it like you cannot choose two of course
24
if you want a challenge and if you want to learn both accents it's okay
25
but i think if you want to learn an accent
26
and to speak it like a hundred percent like a native you have to choose one
27
and learn how to speak it you have to watch movies
28
series practice shadowing you have to speak with the native people with
29
that accent at the same time I think you don't have to only speak with people who speak
30
that accent because when you travel or
31
if you want to speak English for your job you won't
32
speak only with people with one accent you will see people with a British accent
33
and Australian accent and you have to be used to it
34
so what I did when i was learning english with the native people is
35
that i have my main teacher who spoke american english
36
and also i had lessons with teachers with a british accent
37
or australian accent canadian accent
38
because i didn't want to get used to only one accent
39
i wanted to be able to speak with people with different accents
40
and understand them it's one of the best skills that you can have.
41
Also you're more cultural because you speak with people from other countries,
42
you learn things about those countries and it's really interesting not to force yourself to a certain group of people.
43
So that's my first advice.
44
You have to choose one accent and stick to it for a long period of time.
45
Now let's get into how I learned to speak with an American accent.
46
First First of all, you have to practice shadowing, it's one of the best methods to learn an accent.
47
How do you practice it?
48
You watch a video, it can be a movie, a series, and every time a character speaks, you listen to a phrase,
49
then you pause the video and you repeat it.
50
That way you can practice your pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and everything.
51
But most importantly, your pronunciation and accent.
52
Also, you have to exaggerate it.
53
Don't be afraid, because if you want to speak like a native person, you have to exaggerate all the sounds.
54
The R, the T, all those sounds have to be exaggerated to be learned.
55
If you're afraid to sound stupid or, I don't know, if you are embarrassed,
56
you won't learn a new accent because, of course, your mouth even has to get used to that type of accent.
57
Because imagine when you speak Spanish, for example, Spanish is my native language, I move my mouth a certain way.
58
And if you want to speak another language, I have to force my muscles to move another way.
59
And you can learn that if you don't force yourself to exaggerate the sounds.
60
Your mouth, your muscles have to get used to it.
61
When I wanted to start learning,
62
I started learning with the Kardashians because they have a very exaggerated accent
63
and of course in the United States you have different parts
64
and they do not speak the same way in every part of country, so there are different accents.
65
And the Kardashians, I don't remember exactly what accent they have, where they're from, but they have a very exaggerated accent.
66
And so I used to practice shadowing with them because it was easier to understand and to practice.
67
Don't wait to speak English fluently to start practicing your accent, because that way it would be harder for you.
68
You You have to start practicing your pronunciation when you start learning English.
69
It can be with easy words like running, eating, buying, I don't know,
70
every phrase you learn you can use it to practice your pronunciation.
71
So don't wait to speak friendly to start fixing it because that way it would be harder to To fix your muscles,
72
how you move your tongue, you have to start from the beginning.
73
Try to practice the most strong and distinctive letters you have in the accent you wanna learn.
74
For example, in my accent, in the accent that I learned, the American English, we have the R, the T,
75
what else? we have different words
76
but most particularly the R for example running water what
77
else also the T for example you can say battle
78
or you can say tea you have two different types of tea
79
and you have more sounds so try to practice the letters
80
that you find most difficult for me it was the T I think pronouncing the T like this T
81
because in Spanish we don't pronounce it that way
82
so it was hard for me to learn
83
but I practice it with shadowing and everything was easier
84
and also don't worry if you don't have a perfect accent what matters here is
85
that you can communicate with other people from other countries other cultures that's the most interesting part
86
about learning english
87
that you can communicate with people from other countries that's what matters here i find it really interesting too
88
when i meet someone and they speak english
89
and i can tell where they're from for example
90
if they speak english with a french accent
91
or with a german an accent i find that beautiful
92
because i know they are from another culture
93
and i don't know why i find it so beautiful
94
and interesting because
95
if we all speak the same way of course it's a
96
good challenge to learn an accent a hundred percent like a native
97
but also don't worry because Because if we all speak the same way,
98
we would lose that interesting part of having your native language and speaking another language with your native accent.
99
For example, when I meet people and I know they are from Argentina, I find that beautiful.
100
Because I'm like, oh, you're from Argentina, I'm also Argentinian.
101
And I think that's beautiful.
102
What matters here is that you are trying hard to learn another language and that's something
103
Not everyone can do like
104
if I think about for example The people I know from
105
my circle they did not speak English fluently We sometimes
106
because of social media think that speaking English fluently or trying to speak English fluently is
107
normal but it's not most people aren't even trying to speak the language
108
so that you are trying it's a good thing
109
and you are a human you have a brain you will
110
learn how to speak English it's not a science an impossible science it's a language it takes time of course
111
because your brain is used to your native language
112
and of course it's not natural for your brain until you start making it natural
113
but don't worry if you don't learn it within the first few months
114
or within the few first two years it's completely normal i
115
think with social media we started losing track of time
116
and we started thinking that you can achieve everything within months and that's not true.
117
I'm an entrepreneur myself and I see videos of people my age being millionaires with their businesses
118
and I'm like that can be true for some people of course why not
119
but it takes time everything takes time and
120
if you rush things you will get tired you won't enjoy the process
121
and i think that's more dangerous you're teaching your brain a skill you will never forget
122
and you are teaching your brain you can learn things
123
and you can get out of your comfort zone so
124
when you learn something new if If you're an adult
125
and you want to start a new career or you want to start studying at university, whatever it is,
126
you know you will be able to do it because you got out of your comfort zone by learning English.
127
And the last advice that I have is that you practice with videos like I'm doing.
128
Of course, you don't have to pause them, but it's good to listen to yourself talking so
129
that you can realize how your accent is doing and how your pronunciation is doing.
130
Of course, sometimes it's hard because we don't want to face the reality of how we are speaking, but I think it's a good exercise.
131
You should do it.
132
When you listen to yourself speaking, you also are more conscious of your accent and pronunciation and of your voice.
133
I remember when I was younger, I used to have a different voice.
134
Like it was calmer, it was lower and I didn't like it.
135
So when I started facing the reality of watching my videos, I completely changed my voice.
136
And now it's louder, it's calmer too, but it's different.
137
Like, I'm more sure when I'm speaking.
138
Even in English, German, French, Spanish, I'm more sure when I want to say things
139
and I'm not afraid of what I have to say
140
and your voice says when you're not sure of speaking
141
so try to record yourself and watch how you speak it's hard
142
but it's a good exercise and most people don't do it does it happen to you
143
that you record a video or an audio for whatsapp
144
and you don't like your voice this exercise is good for that
145
so i hope you liked this video it was a free
146
video i don't usually do this it's easier for me because i'm speaking naturally and also you are practicing
147
real life english when you travel or
148
if you speak to a native they will speak with this speed they won't speak slow
149
and paused so i think this is a good exercise for you let me know in the comments
150
what your experience with English accent.
151
For example, when you went to school or if you go to school or university, what kind of accent do you learn?
152
