1
Hi everyone!
2
Now we are going to visit the Reunification Palace which witnessed the ups and downs of Saigon's history and the Vietnam War.
3
Vietnam used to be divided into two countries.
4
The North Vietnam Republic Democratic were supported by Russia and China.
5
The South Vietnam Republic were supported by France and USA.
6
This building used to be the working place for four presidents of South Vietnam, Ngô Đình Diệm, Nguyễn Văn Thiệu,
7
Trần Văn Hương, and Dương Văn Minh.
8
The original palace was built in 1871 by French governors.
9
Vietnam was controlled by France from 1958 to 1954.
10
First, it was named Norodom Palace after the King of Cambodia,
11
Norodom Sihanuk, because he allowed France to supervise Indochina.
12
Ngô Đình Nhĩm renamed it Independence Palace in 1954 when he became the first president of South Vietnam.
13
In 1962, the palace was bombed during the attempted assassination on Ngorin Yim president by his opposing forces.
14
Yim was lucky to escape but the whole left part of the palace was destroyed and it was impossible to fix.
15
That was why Ngorin Yim decided to destroy the whole palace and build a totally new one.
16
The building in front of us now was completely built in 1966 due to this event.
17
However, However, Yim was assassinated again in 1963 and he was not lucky this time.
18
The same thing happened to the American president John Kennedy this year.
19
It was Yim that built the palace, but he could not stay any minute inside.
20
Then, the second President Nguyễn Văn Thieu inherited the palace and still kept the same name.
21
It was Thieu that lived here the longest from 1965 to 1975.
22
On April 30, 1975, South Vietnam surrendered to the north and the two countries were reunited in 1976.
23
That's why the palace was renamed Reunification Palace and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.
24
Today, the palace is used as a tourist attraction and as a place to hold the most important events of the country,
25
country like Independence Day celebrations and national leaders' funerals.
26
Our presidents don't live here anymore but in the Presidential Palace in Hanoi capital.
27
Nowadays, most people in the South still call this Independence Palace
28
and Saigon City because it has been carved in their blood since they were born.
29
The Saigonese are especially proud of Saigon because it used to be the most wealthy city in Southeast Asia.
30
Asia.
31
In contrast, most people from the local part call this the Unification Palace and Ho Chi Minh City
32
because it represents the winner and they are very proud of Ho Chi Minh President.
33
It's because the war was just over and it takes time to change people's mind.
34
Now, according to people's communication habits, Saigon is like a spoken name and Ho Chi Minh City is the official name
35
that must appear on residential addresses in the citizens' official papers.
