1
We begin with breaking news and a mother and young boy are in hospital following a frightening stabbing attack on Spencer Street.
2
Rebecca Powell joins us live.
3
Bec, police were quick to make an arrest.
4
Within minutes, Jen, but remarkably it was members of the public who stepped in
5
and got to the man first performing a citizen's arrest.
6
Now this all happened about one o'clock this afternoon on Spencer Street right near West Melbourne Police Station and Victoria Police Headquarters.
7
Now police say the woman was walking along Spencer Street with her three children.
8
Her 10-year-old son was then assaulted at random, punched in the head and neck.
9
Now this offender has continued walking, then turned back, put her in a headlock and stabbed her repeatedly in the back near her shoulder blade.
10
That's when these members of the public have rushed in.
11
They've dragged this man off her, pinned him to the ground and then officers have arrived and police say those actions were nothing short of heroic.
12
Without a doubt, without their intervention, it could have been a lot worse.
13
So we are so grateful for their assistance and I'm sure the family are as well.
14
Now, incredibly, the boy has escaped serious injury and the mother was taken to hospital, but she is expected to survive.
15
They weren't particularly serious.
16
A 27-year-old Sunshine Westman is currently in custody but is yet to be interviewed by police.
17
Jen?
18
Okay, thank you, Bec.
