1
I've been thinking about something lately.
2
How much of who we are today is inherited, and how much of it actually is a choice?
3
My life, your life, nothing ever becomes real until it is experienced.
4
Hello and welcome and thank you so much for coming back today to have this conversation with me.
5
My son recently celebrated a birthday and I was thinking about families and how much I miss being around with everybody.
6
I have three children and fortunately one of my daughters is with me,
7
but my other daughter and my son live away within flying distance, but they live away.
8
But I was thinking about family and how important it is to me.
9
But I always also was thinking about who we are and how much of what we inherit makes us who we are.
10
Or maybe it also has to do with we are because of our different choices.
11
and my son I think has been an example for me.
12
I have three children and two of my daughters went to college
13
so that when my son was of college age
14
and he graduated from high school we sat down
15
and we were talking about his future
16
and I said you know I really think you should try to get into NYU you.
17
And he said, Mother, I don't want to go to college.
18
Well, his two sisters are college graduates.
19
And I always felt that that was the way of the future and that children really should go to college.
20
And he said, Mother, I want to follow my music.
21
And I thought about that.
22
And I knew he was right.
23
Because my son from since he was about six years old, has been songwriting.
24
My mother used to run around behind him with a pencil to write down all the lyrics
25
because once he sang a song and the lyrics were gone because he never put anything down at that age.
26
But I always knew that his heart was really into music and songwriting.
27
And actually, he had been preparing for this his whole life.
28
He had already done the work for most of his life.
29
and if you follow me you know that his father passed
30
or was murdered when he was a little boy
31
but his father also had a very serious illness paranoid schizophrenia but his father also had a beautiful baritone voice that
32
When he was in the Korean War he sang with the USO
33
and he traveled all over Europe
34
and in Germany he sang in the beautiful cathedrals there with Vic Damone
35
and many other people but he was gifted a beautiful baritone voice
36
and I think down deep in his heart
37
when he came back from Korea he had always wanted to use his voice
38
and maybe be a singer be a famous somehow
39
but it never happened because of his illness so most of my son's fathers
40
and my ex-husband, my late husband's life and his talent was wasted
41
because most of the people that came into his arena are in,
42
they touched in many ways.
43
He touched them with pain.
44
He took so much away from so many people by his illness and the pain that he caused all around him.
45
And I knew somehow that my son's talents perhaps were,
46
he would be able to use to correct everything that his father left left all that my son inherited,
47
I was hoping, would help erase and counteract the pain that my late husband caused so many people.
48
I was willing to let go because I knew
49
that it was not my right to be able to deny him to follow his path
50
and to know what was inside of his heart to move forward with his life.
51
How many times have we been stopped by outside influences
52
and outside voices who feel that they know better than we what we want for our lives?
53
isn't it true
54
that nobody knows us better than ourselves nobody can get
55
inside of your head to tell you exactly what your dreams
56
are now we do inherit a lot of things we inherit hair color,
57
eyes, complexions, things like that.
58
But we also inherit things that maybe keep us from following our dreams.
59
We inherit fear.
60
We inherit pain.
61
We inherit troubles.
62
We inherit a background sometimes of the people that have been around us or have come before us.
63
We inherit all of those things in our lives.
64
But it's up to us
65
to decide which of those things that we have inherited
66
that we are going to play forward and that we are going to use to better our lives
67
and to perhaps follow our destinies.
68
my son knew what he wanted to do
69
and my daughters knew what they wanted to do and
70
because of what I inherited the background that I inherited I knew how important it was
71
to let go and to let others follow their destiny and know what things that they have inherited
72
they are going to keep.
73
And those things that maybe they inherited,
74
they are going to let go so they can move forward in their lives.
75
Now, it would be foolish for me to sit here and say, oh, you know, because everybody has a dream, it's going to come true.
76
That might be good for a coffee mug saying,
77
but I know that that is not always true, especially for creative people.
78
they oftentimes try but it doesn't always work out for them
79
and I know that that is true but I have always realized
80
that if you don't try and you don't use for good the things that you were born with,
81
you'll regret it and spend the rest of your life regretting that at least you didn't try.
82
My father kept me from my dream, made me go to college, and wasted years of my life.
83
And I eventually found my dream when I was 50 years old by acting on the stage and in movies.
84
I had it in me and had the good fortune to have the ability
85
and the circumstances to allow me to finally realize my dream.
86
But I think that it that's why I had more clarity and I had more insight
87
to see that sometimes what we inherit,
88
we do not have to take the negative part of that inheritance and make that our destiny.
89
We can find our own destiny using the gifts that we were born with,
90
and it's our choice to do so.
91
What are you going to do with what you have been given?
92
Maybe you are wonderful with children.
93
Maybe you are excellent working with your hands.
94
Maybe you are a compassionate person who can share your pain
95
and the experience of going through pain with others and help them with their lives.
96
Maybe you are musical.
97
Maybe you can be an artist.
98
Maybe you have some type of creative gene that has not been fulfilled yet.
99
You do not have to let that talent that you were born with die.
100
It's never too late to realize the gift that you were given in life can be awakened at any age,
101
and you can experience it with yourself or share it with others.
102
And if you are young, you don't have to take perhaps the fear,
103
the troubles and perhaps the unfortunate circumstances of those who came before you and you have inherited certain characteristics,
104
that, I mean, it's really true that their destiny does not have to be yours.
105
You can take the gifts that you were given and make something positive out of your life with those gifts.
106
It's up to you.
107
You do have a choice.
108
Maybe the best question is, what am I going to do?
109
with the gifts that I have been given while I am here.
110
Thank you so much for being with me today, and I hope that you have thought about this conversation
111
and will roll it around and think about all the gifts
112
that you have been given and how perhaps you can change your destiny by using them in a positive way.
113
Thank you for joining me today, and I hope wherever you are in the world,
114
you will realize that you are never alone because you have this community and you are truly, truly loved.
115
Thank you, and I'll see you again for another conversation.

Sobre esta lição

Você está praticando inglês com "You Inherited More Than You Think — But You Don’t Have to Keep It | Sandra Hart" usando a técnica de Shadowing.
