1. Introduction
Shadowing English ("we", "our", "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your data when you use the Shadowing English application on web and mobile devices (Android/iOS).
2. Data We Collect
Account Information: When you sign in via Google or Apple, we collect your display name, email address, and profile picture. We do NOT access your Google password, Google Drive, or any other sensitive data. Learning Data: Practice progress, pronunciation scores, streak count, practiced videos, and speaking level. Device Data: Country (via Cloudflare), timezone, device type (desktop/mobile), and browser language to optimize your experience. Audio Data (Microphone): The app requests microphone access to record your voice during pronunciation practice. Audio is processed entirely on your device using the browser's built-in Web Speech API. We do NOT send, store, or transmit any audio recordings to our servers. All audio exists only temporarily on your device and is discarded when you move to the next sentence or close the app.
3. App Permissions
Microphone: Required for the pronunciation practice (Shadowing) feature. Used for speech recognition and pronunciation scoring. You may deny this permission, but the recording feature will not be available. Internet: Required to load YouTube videos, sync learning progress, and display leaderboards. Push Notifications: Optional — sends daily practice reminders. You can disable this at any time in your device settings.
4. How We Use Your Data
We use your data to: save and sync your learning progress across devices; score pronunciation and track improvement; rank users on leaderboards; send practice reminders (with your consent); detect and prevent system abuse. We do NOT sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties for advertising, marketing, or tracking purposes.
5. Data Storage & Security
Data is stored on secure servers with transport encryption (HTTPS/TLS). Passwords are hashed with unique salts — we never store plaintext passwords. Authentication tokens use HMAC-SHA256 signatures with a 30-day expiry.
6. Your Rights & Data Deletion
You have full rights to: view and edit your personal information on the profile page; permanently delete your account and all learning data through the "Delete Account" feature in the app, or by sending a request to [email protected]. We will process deletion requests within 7 business days. When your account is deleted, all personal data, learning progress, scores, and notes are permanently erased and cannot be recovered.
7. Children's Privacy
Shadowing English is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you are a parent or guardian and discover that your child has provided personal information to us, please contact us so we can delete it promptly.
8. Third-Party Services
The app uses: YouTube API Services (subject to YouTube Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy); Google Sign-In for authentication; Cloudflare for security and country detection; Google Analytics (optional) for anonymous traffic analysis.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Significant changes will be communicated via the app or email. Your continued use of the app after updates constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
