And if I'm honest, I can already see how you could end up choosing the wrong one, because I see it every time a new camera comes out.

You'll likely look at image quality, compare a few clips and make a decision based on that, but that's not the only deciding factor between what makes one camera better than another.

Yes, it's something to consider, but only when you take into consideration where you're going to be filming.

There are certain ways of filming where one of these just doesn't make sense

and if you pick it anyway because on paper the features and specs sound better you'll probably regret it quite quickly.

So rather than asking which one is better I'm going to show you

when I would use each one of these or more importantly when I wouldn't use one over the other and vice versa.

was just a bunch of nonsense, just another mystery I didn't understand.

I was living without it so long that I didn't even feel wrong before I met you.

Love was just another concept.

So starting with the Osmo Pocket 4, this is the one that gives you more control.

If you're filming someone and you want smooth movement from the gimbal

or you're filming yourself and you don't want to worry about framing, this is where it starts to make more sense,

especially if you want to shoot smooth B-roll as well because the Pocket 4 is great for that because of its gimbal.

I will also mention image quality here as well

because there is a difference between the Pocket 4 and the Osmo Action 6 which is why you might think,

okay well the Osmo Pocket 4 is obviously the one that I should buy because it's better.

And sure if it's true that the biggest feature, the tracking makes a huge difference to your filming situation then in context it is better.

So if you're shooting solo you can just set it up

and it'll keep you framed

when you move around without you having to worry about moving around the frame

and not being in the frame whilst you move around.

Filming indoors is actually another really big consideration

and it's where the Osmo Pocket 4 is set apart from the Osmo Action 6

and this is actually one of those scenarios where I would

reach for the Pocket 4 more than I would for the Action 6.

That extra quality actually matters quite a lot

when the lighting is pretty crap

because with the Pocket 4 not only does it do better overall in low light

but it also has this little light that you can attach to the gimbal

which is great if you're traveling

and you want to film in your room at night but you don't want to bring extra lighting with you,

or even rely on the artificial room lights which look awful in videos but even worse with the Osmo Action 6.

But the biggest trade-off with the Osmo Pocket 4 is the fact

that in run-and-gun vlogging situations where you just want to pull the camera out of your pocket, hit record, film something very quickly that's happening,

the Pocket 4 isn't really, it doesn't lend itself to that as well as the Action 6 does.

And if you do try to use the Pocket 4 in situations where things are happening really quickly, that's where it can start to feel like it's slowing you down.

And I'll be honest, it's the gimbal and it's a fantastic feature for a camera in the right scenario,

but not for me for those quick run and gun shots because then it just becomes a hindrance.

Now the Action 6 is different because this is the one

that I use when I want to do any kind of walking

and talking and also if I want to do any kind of POV whilst I walk and talk as well.

I can easily just pull it out point and shoot

and capture things really quickly unlike with the pocket 4 where

I'd need to get the gimbal in the right position first

and if I try to use the pocket 4 for those quick point-and-shoot shots the gimbal just slows me down

and I can tell you that makes a huge difference

when you're on the go which is why I prefer the action 6 in those situations

and that also goes for the weather as well

this Thailand trip is the perfect example even though I'm talking

about the pocket 3 it still applies to the pocket 4 as well

because when we left the hotel the Sun was shining and then there was a downpour

It was really nice when we left, it was really sunny, it was really warm.

I mean it's still warm, it's not really cold.

But if I had had the Pocket 3, I wouldn't have been able to keep filming like I am now.

So having something like an action camera just makes complete sense.

Another thing is, if you're out with your kids, you know that things move very quickly and you're trying to keep up with them.

You're not really planning shots and you're whipping the camera around in all directions just to capture what's happening.

and I actually had this recently.

I took the Pocket 4 out with me for a day

out with my two kids whilst they were running around the forest

and I ended up wishing that I'd just used an action camera instead

and to be fair I did have the Osmo 360 with me

and I caved at one point even though the whole point of the video was to use the Pocket 4 for testing.

I wanted to see what film tones looked like

so that's why I was using the Pocket 4 but I wanted

that more immersive feel because of the location that we were in

and I wanted to be able to hand the camera to the kids

because they really wanted to film each other and I just wanted something

that I could put away really quickly without having to be careful

and then pull it out again without having to faff around with it as well

so I definitely felt that whole using the wrong camera for the wrong situation

that day and in

that kind of scenario an action camera just makes more sense it's quicker it's easier

and it doesn't get in your way but the trade-off is coming back to the image quality

when you move into environments where you've got more mixed lighting or the lighting isn't very good

that's where it doesn't hold up in the same way that the Pocket 4 does.

And that is where considering image quality genuinely makes sense.

this is one of the other reasons why vlogging with the Action 6 or an action camera outdoors

is uh preferable to the pocket ball or at least having one with you so that when it does you know, end up, you can see there,

when it does end up tipping down, then you can still carry on doing your videos.

and each one has its strengths and it's not just a about which one looks better on paper.

So if I did have to choose between the Osmo Pocket 4 and the Osmo Action 6, I wouldn't base it on image quality first

It would very much come down to how I'm planning on using the camera that I want to buy.

that I'm going to be filming myself talking to the camera

and I'm not moving around much like I'm doing at the moment, or if I'm shooting in any indoor location where the lighting is usually poor,

especially while traveling and wanting to film in my hotel room, there's no question that I'm definitely going to be picking up the Osmo Pocket 4 as my first choice.

It just works a lot better in that kind of environment

and it just works a lot better in terms of the image quality when you're filming indoors.

But if I'm going out walking and talking and I'm filming in unpredictable ways, moving around a lot, the Action 6 is a complete no-brainer.

It's definitely the one that I'm picking.

It's quicker, it's easier, I can just pick it up, point and shoot and I know it's not going to slow me down.

There is one more thing that I did forget to mention and that's battery life.

The Osmo Pocket 4 has great battery life

but the Action 6 has the advantage of swappable batteries

so you can take as many as you need for a full day of filming.

With the Osmo Pocket 4 you'd have to charge it up at some point, maybe more than once depending on how you want to film, which does mean that you're interrupting your flow a little bit.

So when I started thinking about cameras in terms of scenarios and filming locations rather than just specs and features,

it really did make my decision to use one camera over another,

less about emotion and what I liked more or what was my favourite and more about the practicality of things.

I no longer agonise over which camera I need to take out with me

because I know immediately which one is going to be better for what I plan to film

So if your budget does allow you might not be looking at

which one should I buy but instead maybe buying both

and knowing where their strengths and weaknesses lie so that you can just pick the right one at the right time.

But if you have a tight budget right now, I think about what is the most likely scenario

that camera first and just make it work until you can then add the other camera to your camera kit.
