1
Most IELTS students are preparing for the test completely backwards.
2
They're memorizing vocabulary lists, learning complex grammar templates and following advice that sounds right,
3
but actually makes their score worse.
4
I know this because I've spent over ten years helping thousands of students get a band seven,
5
eight and even nine.
6
And because I watched my own wife waste thousands of dollars failing the test over and over again,
7
many, many years ago.
8
She followed everything her teacher told her and got nowhere.
9
It wasn't until I built her a completely different system that everything changed.
10
So if I could go back in time and teach her again from scratch,
11
the first thing I'd change is the mistake that cost her the most time and money.
12
So before I was an IELTS teacher,
13
I used to teach just general English in a big language center.
14
And I'd see IELTS examiners in that center marking IELTS tests every single day.
15
And almost all of them had a box of headache tablets sitting right next to their papers.
16
When I asked them why they took so many headache tablets,
17
they said two words, headache essays.
18
A headache essay is one that is so overloaded with complicated vocabulary
19
and grammar that it literally gives the examiner a headache trying to figure out what the person was trying to say.
20
And this was actually what my wife was doing
21
because her teacher had given her a list of band 9 vocabulary and a set of complete complex sentence templates.
22
The idea that her IELTS teacher had was quite simple.
23
More complexity equals a higher score.
24
But I wanted to check whether that was actually true.
25
So I took all the official Cambridge books,
26
the ones that have band 8 and band 9 samples at the back,
27
and I ran all those essays through software that measures language complexity.
28
And what I found was the opposite of what everyone was teaching.
29
The highest scoring essays produced by Cambridge were the simplest ones,
30
with the lowest amount of complex vocabulary and grammar.
31
And then I took all of my wife's essays,
32
and they had far more complex words and sentences,
33
exactly what the examiners were calling headache essays.
34
So I went back to our teacher,
35
and I asked him about this,
36
and he said something I'll never forget.
37
Of course we know simpler writing scores higher,
38
but students want vocabulary lists.
39
They want templates.
40
And if we don't give them that,
41
they just go to another school.
42
And that's the moment that I realized that the problem wasn't my wife's English or her writing.
43
The problem was who she was listening to.
44
Her teacher knew the truth
45
and he chose to tell her what she wanted to hear instead of what she needed to hear.
46
If I were teaching my wife again from day one,
47
the first thing I'd tell her is find people who will be brutally honest with you about what you need to do,
48
even if you don't want to hear it.
49
The thing I say to my students is,
50
you will hate me when I'm giving you feedback,
51
but you will love me on results day.
52
And that's the most important thing.
53
But understanding this was just the first step
54
because the way my wife was actually preparing day to day was still completely wrong.
55
And that's what cost us the most time.
56
So let me take you through a typical day,
57
what it looked like when she was preparing.
58
So she'd wake up and do some listening practice
59
because someone on YouTube told her to do a listening practice test every day.
60
Then she'd spend an hour memorizing lists of vocabulary.
61
And in the evening, she'd watch two or three IELTS tips videos from different teachers,
62
all saying different things.
63
So she was busy every day and felt tired at the end of every day.
64
But then she was getting frustrated because she wasn't seeing any improvement.
65
That is one of the most frustrating things in the world when you're working hard,
66
but you're not seeing any progress.
67
So the problem for most students isn't that they are lazy.
68
The opposite is actually true.
69
They're working extremely hard, but with no direction, no focus.
70
So the example I always give to my students is,
71
imagine I drop you into the center of London,
72
and I tell you to go and find Buckingham Palace.
73
And I say, just follow the signs and ask a few people,
74
and you'll make it there.
75
Or you put Buckingham Palace into Google Maps,
76
and it will take you directly there in the simplest,
77
shortest, most direct route.
78
That's exactly what a real study system does.
79
It understands where you are right now and exactly what you need to do to get to your target score.
80
If I were teaching my wife again,
81
I would never let her sit down and study without a clear step-by-step roadmap that was personalized to her.
82
So what does that actually mean?
83
Well, I would sit down and I would actually look at her essays.
84
I would do practice speaking tests with her.
85
I would get her to do writing tests and listening tests and then analyze all of her mistakes.
86
That would allow me to find out the most important thing,
87
which is what are her exact weaknesses and what do we need to do to turn each of those weaknesses into strengths.
88
And we would do that by creating like a step-by-step study roadmap that just focuses on closing those gaps.
89
So that's why we say that's like Google Maps for IELTS preparation.
90
It not only saves you time,
91
but it reduces stress significantly because you feel like you're working on the right things and making progress every day.
92
But even with a perfect study plan,
93
you can make one big mistake that means that you'll fail over and over again.
94
And this is the one big mistake that cost her the most money.
95
So my wife was writing essays every single day.
96
Her teacher told her that that was the key to success.
97
And that's half true.
98
Practice is important, but
99
if you have no one to actually look at your essays who is an actual expert
100
and tell you where you're going right,
101
where you're going wrong, it's a huge waste of time.
102
So when I looked at the feedback on her essays,
103
it said things like improve vocabulary,
104
improve ideas, make sentences more complex.
105
But what does that actually mean?
106
She didn't know what a good idea or a bad idea was.
107
So how could she improve her ideas?
108
Even though the paper was covered in red,
109
there was nothing showing her this is exactly why this is wrong and this is how to fix it.
110
She was just reinforcing lots of bad habits and lots of mistakes because the teacher never made her aware of this.
111
And this wasn't really the teacher's fault.
112
Problem was is that he was a teacher.
113
He wasn't a former examiner.
114
So he didn't really know himself what to look out for.
115
And this is not a criticism of teachers in any way.
116
I'm just telling you what actually happened.
117
So she was paying someone to make her writing and speaking worse
118
and then going and doing the test and throwing away even more money,
119
which is incredibly frustrating.
120
So if I could go back in time
121
and give her advice on how to actually save money
122
while getting better is to only work with a qualified former examiner to look at her writing
123
and listen to her speaking and tell her exactly what is wrong with that.
124
Now, many people might say,
125
including my wife at the time,
126
but those teachers are more expensive.
127
And there's a saying in English,
128
if you think hiring an expert is expensive, try hiring an amateur.
129
So trying to save a few dollars today by finding a cheaper teacher,
130
but throwing away thousands in test fees,
131
sounds crazy when you think about it,
132
but many of you watching right now are doing exactly that.
133
You are looking for the cheapest teacher rather than the best teacher.
134
Every day, every month, every year,
135
you are not working in America or Australia or UK or Canada.
136
You're throwing away all that extra salary that you could be earning.
137
But I still haven't told you about the number one reason for failure,
138
not just with my wife,
139
but this is the number one reason why thousands of students failed.
140
And it is actually quite easy to fix.
141
So in general, there are two types of students.
142
Let's call them student A and student B.
143
Student A knows the test is coming up soon.
144
They book the test, and then they try and figure out how to get that score.
145
Then we have student B who doesn't book the test.
146
What they do is they find out what level they're at now
147
and what they need to do to get to the level
148
that they need to be at to get the score that they need.
149
And they don't book the test until they are 100% ready.
150
Which one do you think 90% of students are, including my wife?
151
Student A.
152
About 10% of people or student B,
153
but student B is pretty much guaranteed to get the score that they need.
154
Student A will struggle over and over and over again.
155
And this is exactly what my wife did.
156
She would just see, oh,
157
in six weeks, there's a test coming up or in four weeks,
158
book it and then just panic and start studying and trying and hoping for the best.
159
Hope is not really a strategy.
160
You're not going to get lucky.
161
The only way that you will pass is to understand exactly where you are
162
and exactly what you need to do to get to that level.
163
And it is all about just making that decision.
164
This is actually the first thing in the first video on our VIP course.
165
I'll give you a little sneak peek of our VIP course.
166
The very first thing we say is do not book your test until we tell you that you are ready.
167
Because that pretty much guarantees you're going to get the score that you need.
168
Sounds super obvious and super simple,
169
but it probably is the most profound and effective advice you will ever hear.
170
So if I could go back,
171
I would just tell my wife,
172
don't book the test until an expert tells you you are ready to get the scores that you need.
173
And she would have saved months of her life
174
because she wouldn't have had to do the test over and over again and thousands of dollars.
175
And that leads us to the final thing that I would tell her,
176
Something that has nothing to do with English at all.
177
But my wife says mattered more than anything else.
178
Every IELTS video you'll watch focuses on strategies and techniques and how to improve your English,
179
which are valuable.
180
But it is not as powerful as what I'm about to share with you.
181
None of them talk about what it actually feels like to be preparing for the IELTS test.
182
Just coping with the stress of knowing your whole future is determined by a score on a piece of paper.
183
My wife knew that if she didn't get the score that she needed,
184
her family would be stuck in a country she didn't really want to live in anymore.
185
And she'd walk into the exam room thinking about
186
that instead of thinking about how do I write a clear essay
187
or how do I clearly answer questions in the speaking test.
188
Her brain would actually shut down from all of the stress.
189
So it didn't matter how good her English was or how many techniques or strategies she learned,
190
until she was able to fix this stress problem,
191
nothing was going to help her.
192
So you can be completely prepared and still underperform.
193
Some of you watching this video will know exactly what I'm talking about.
194
You feel that you're ready.
195
Maybe you did practice tests and you got the score that you needed.
196
But on test day, you were so overwhelmed with stress that you couldn't perform at the level that you're capable of.
197
So if I had to start over with my wife,
198
I'd address these types of things from day one,
199
not just stress, not just how to manage anxiety,
200
but things like how to stay focused during preparation,
201
how to stay focused during the test,
202
how to deal with negative feedback and mistakes and setbacks,
203
how to walk into that exam room calm and in control and knowing that you will get the score that you need.
204
This is why we added a mindset course to our VIP course and it's actually the first course students do.
205
We force people to do the mindset course before we talk about writing
206
or reading or speaking or listening because it is so important.
207
And if you listen to all of the success stories we have,
208
most of them actually talk about the mindset course
209
and how it was more important than the actual IELTS lessons that we teach.
210
Now the IELTS lessons are good,
211
they do help, but you need to fix
212
that mindset part of the equation first before you can perform at the level you need to be at.
213
So in the end, what I decided to do was learn how to teach IELTS myself
214
and I took over my wife's IELTS preparation and taught her myself.
215
And after weeks of preparing with this new approach,
216
the big day finally arrived for my results day and my wife had done everything differently this time.
217
She stopped trying to impress the examiner with fancy vocabulary and structures.
218
She'd followed a structured roadmap instead of jumping from random tip to random tip
219
and I also found qualified former examiners with more than a decade of experience to do practice tests with her,
220
to do speaking tests and look at her writing and give her feedback and show her exactly what she needed to fix.
221
And most importantly
222
she didn't book the test until we told her she was ready
223
and she was able to walk into the exam room knowing
224
that she was a hundred percent sure going to get the score
225
that she needed because she had done so many practice tests with us
226
and she had got some great feedback
227
and we had told her no matter what happens but
228
if you follow this system you are going to get the score
229
that you need
230
but even though she was calm on test day she wasn't very calm on results day
231
and when she got the email her hands were shaking
232
so much she couldn't even tap into the email to get a result so she handed me the phone
233
We took a deep breath,
234
tapped the screen, band 7.5.
235
So more than enough for her visa.
236
We put our house up for sale
237
and three weeks later We landed in Dublin and I'll never forget watching my son on that first day
238
running through those green fields breathing in that fresh air in the country he was supposed to grow up in.
239
And 10 years later, we're still living in the same amazing area and we have one more addition.
240
William, actually two more additions.
241
Now we have our dog, Nuki.
242
So that's what I would do if I could go back in time and help my wife.
243
But unfortunately, time machines don't exist.
244
But the good news for you is everything
245
that I've learned in more than 10 years of helping thousands of students get a band 7,
246
8, and 9, I've put into our VIP course and our VIP system. So
247
if you join today we will look at your writing listen
248
to your speaking find out exactly where you are what score you're at why you're at
249
that score and then design a personalized roadmap showing you step by step exactly what to do
250
and we won't let you do the test until we tell you you're 100% ready
251
so that on test day all that stress is gone
252
and you can walk in with total confidence
253
that you will get the score that you need
254
because of the level of feedback and help
255
that we give to students we can't help everybody
256
but I'll give you 10% off today as a reward for watching to the end of this video.
257
If you go to the description you can click on
258
that link see if there are any places available and you will get 10% off at that link.

261
and one-on-one support but maybe you just want some free courses.
262
If you want that here's a complete writing course,
263
here's a complete speaking course.
264
And then later on, if you need more feedback,
265
more one-on-one help, you can join the VIP course later.
266
So click on one of those.
267
If you just want free stuff,
268
