The universe is amazing and vast and we're only just beginning to explore it.

But one One of the questions we have always asked is, are we alone?

My name is Dr Maggie Adairin-Pocock and I'm a space scientist.

And this is a question I've pondered since I was young.

Back through time and across the world, we've been exploring the universe.

And over the last few hundred years, we've been using telescopes like this here at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London.

Eventually we built probes and sent them to virtually all the planets of the solar system.

We found water on Mars, we found methane on Saturn's moon Titan, but we haven't found life yet.

But now we have the opportunity to look at life beyond our solar system.

We live in a galaxy called the Milky Way and it contains approximately 300 billion stars.

Each one of these stars is a solar system with planets going around it and now we're trying to find life on these planets.

We call them exoplanets.

We've only been detecting these exoplanets for about 20-25 years.

And so far we've detected around 2,500.

But then that asks the question, if there are so many exoplanets out there, what is the probability of finding intelligent life?

In the 1960s, a chap called Frank Drake came up with an equation to work out the probability of finding intelligent life out there.

It's called the Drake Equation.

No, not that Drake.

It has seven terms in the equation.

And one of those terms is, what's the probability of life occurring on a planet?

Well, the only example of life on a planet we have is planet Earth.

And we know that for life to occur here, we needed water.

So we need to look for water on these exoplanets.

And the truth is, we've detected it.

We've found water in these exoplanets.

So, is there intelligent life out there?

Well, the short answer is, we don't know.

But as a space scientist, I believe the probability is quite high.

With all those stars, galaxies and moons out there, why would life just occur here?

So we haven't found intelligent life yet, but maybe you'll be the generation that does.
