Today we're going to be talking about life in England, so sit back, relax and immerse yourself in the English language.

I think the first topic I want to talk about is the weather.

Classic.

Yeah, classic it's now spring it's easter the weather is kind of getting better it's really sunny at the minute

but in the morning it could be nice and sunny

and by the evening we could be in a torrential downpour yeah it's been quite sunny today

but looking out the window at the moment i can see a big dark grey cloud

so it's probably going to rain a bit later today

and yesterday it was really windy we had a storm oh

yeah storm dave in england storm dave um yeah it was

really really windy we could hear it from inside the house

but it seems to have cleared up today

but that's what we find about living in England is

that you can have all four seasons in one day yeah this is

so true you wake up it could be snowing

and then it could be sunny then it'll be raining

and then it'll be windy

and it's typical weather where you wear one coat out in the morning

and by the evening you need a totally different coat a

winter coat speaking of weather it's a really good topic for

small talk as well in england we are famed for our small talk

because i've said this in a previous video

but british people do not like silence awkward silence awkward silence

and it's not even awkward for people from other cultures

because it's quite normal to just sit in silence

but british people really struggle with that the good thing about summer starting is

that we can finally turn off our heating

because that's one thing about british houses is

that we don't have air conditioning we have heating our houses

are designed to keep the heat in at all costs yeah we try to

which means that in the summer when it starts getting a bit hot

and it gets up to about 30 degrees celsius it's really hot in our houses yeah

and in england the majority of the country don't invest in air conditioning

because it's just not hot enough for long enough no we'll have like three weeks of really hot

and i say really hot it's only like 30 degrees

so apologies if you're living in a country that's above 30 degrees

but it feels much hotter because we don't have air conditioning yeah

but if you're in england during the summer all you'll hear is british people moaning

and complaining about the weather about how hot they are i

do it all the time i i work from home a lot of the time

so i'm on like work video calls and i'm like sweating

and my boss is like get a fan

or open some windows i'm like the windows are open i've got four fans blowing on me

it's not enough

but it's just not worth the money in england to invest

in the air conditioning for like two maybe three weeks a

year i think it's only been hot for the last two years before

that summer lasted a couple of weeks and that was it

but last year i think we did get a good month

more than a month yeah four to six weeks weather um

but yeah british people will moan about the winter when it's cold

and then as soon as it starts getting hot we'll moan

about the heat as well yeah one of the things i love

or i did love when i was a child i still love now

but i do it less often is we have the ice

cream men come around you just missed it oh really yeah oh that's a shame i don't know

if you have this in your countries but we have a person

that drives a truck and sells ice cream and they play the music

so all the kids and all the families know

that the ice cream truck is on the way ah those are the good days

and I always used to get this it was a caramel lolly um called a zap

and it was green purple and brown but it was it tasted of caramel

and it was so good

and since growing up like the ice cream trucks don't sell

them anymore I don't know where I can get these zaps from

if anybody knows please tell me I love zaps I used to get a screwball

which was like ice cream with a bit of swirly jam and it was in the shape of a cone

but it was plastic but it had the ice cream

and the jam and then at the bottom was like a really hard bit of chewing gum or bubble gum

so you'd eat the ice cream and then you'd get the bubble gum at the end I didn't like those, I didn't like the strawberry sauce I loved the strawberry sauce

they automatically gave you strawberry sauce on your ice cream you had to ask for chocolate sauce

this was built into the ice cream yeah they didn't pour

it on oh in ice screwballs you had to pour it on really? yeah, are you sure?

no I'm not sure it was like 30 years ago now yeah they poured it on

but then when I was starting to get a bit older the ice cream van got a bit fancier

and they started doing like

lemon oh Cool lemon ice cream like the soft serve oh what

and it was really really good you'd get a flake in

it as well like a lemon with a flake i remember

it as well back in the day you had your cone your soft serve ice cream

and it was called a 99p flake and you got the flake in it

and the whole thing was just 99p they got rid of calling it a 99p flake

because now it's something like two pounds or three pounds

or something stupid like

that yeah yeah it used to be 99p for an ice

cream inflation back in my day back in my day oh

going back to what you were saying about like our houses

are built to keep the heat in it's super common in

england for all houses to have carpet i mean i guess more

and more people are going with wood like a wood floor throughout the house

but historically people had carpets in every single room and

that helped to keep the heating the house

that I grew up in had carpet really much everywhere maybe

the main like maybe the main hallway was tiled I think it was tiled

but every literally every other room in the house had carpet we had carpet growing up in every room

and I remember I went on holiday with school

and I came back and my parents had changed the whole house to wood including my room

and I was so sad I cried for

so long I loved my carpet in my room it was a pink carpet

and then I came back and had this brown wooden floor

which is totally fine such a weird thing to have a tantrum about yeah they didn't even ask me

and like why should they it's not your house i know i know

but it was my room i had thomas the tank engine um wallpaper growing up

and when we moved house i asked my parents

if we could take it with us really that's cute they said no that's

so funny so growing up we used to have a school bus

that took us to school and there would be different points in the village

because I grew up in a tiny village in a city called Leicester

so there'd be like three or four school buses

and they'd stop maybe four stops throughout the village

and then we'd go on to school

but you grew up in London yeah I grew up in London

so there were buses everywhere we had the London buses the

red ones not school buses no we didn't have any school

buses there may have been some around maybe in the not

so busier areas but yeah for us it was just get the bus 20p

but was that 20p that you had to pay

because it's public transport

or did you get a bus pass no i didn't have

a bus pass until i was old enough then i got like a child's travel card

because then i could get cheaper trains i think

that was why i did that that's before that i think

that was before like the oyster card travel card thing

because i would just get on

and it was very a cash driven society back back then um sharing our age um

so you just chuck 20p and then there's your ticket

and then as technology advanced it then turned into a card that you tapped

you'd load money onto that card and now everyone just uses their debit

or credit card up until i went to university we had a school bus pass really yeah

and we didn't have any of that it was all self -funded no i remember

when i went to college it was still in the city

that i grew up in uh and it was still a bus pass

but you could use the public buses with it

but up until college everything else was like a school specific

bus pass with school specific buses yeah interesting it's different in london i guess yeah

and then i remember it used to cost two pounds for

training into London on my child's travel card two pounds to get all the way to London yeah

and then back again how far did you grow up from

London it was about 45 minute train oh wow maybe less oh

so two pounds not bad at all yeah really really good yeah

that is good considering the money we pay now to get to London yeah over 20 pounds

if you're what is it 60 or 65 if you're over

that age in England and

if you live in london you get a free bus pass at that age

so that's really good yeah you can ride the bus anywhere yeah not trains though no not trains

but in general trains in england we're really well connected but trains are really expensive yeah compared to like europe or

or even other countries yeah not so much america

because they don't really have trains yeah in america we have a lot of friends in america

and they drive everywhere if you look at a map

if you look at an overground map of Europe of England you'll see all of

that you can see all of the train routes

and there's hundreds of them it's so well connected

and especially Europe Europe is really well connected

but then you look at a train map of America it's literally like east west north south yeah good luck

and when we were in Los Angeles What I can remember is their underground just went north to south, east to west, and that was it.

New York's underground system is really good.

Yeah.

And then when we went to Texas to visit one of our friends, we wanted to drive to Houston.

Yeah, it was Houston.

And we said, oh, is there not just a train that we can get?

Because it was like a four -hour, five -hour drive, wasn't it?

Yeah, and this is one part of Texas to another part of Texas.

Yeah.

It's the same state.

And I thought, oh, maybe we'll just get a train maybe it'll be quicker

and easier and then someone doesn't have to drive

but nope there's no trains in between in these two major cities

and I just find that incredibly weird so lucky being in Europe

and being so well connected we can get to France in half an hour yeah

and with the Channel Tunnel we can also get on a train in our car we did

that a couple of years ago we drove onto the Channel Tunnel train we got it from Folkestone maybe

and it's built four cars and that was just

so quick 30 minutes and you're in europe you're in france driving around france

and belgium yeah

so yeah we're really well connected in europe the only thing

i would say about our transport system is how expensive it

is literally this week um we were looking at flights versus

trains for a friend that's coming over he wants to travel from england to the Netherlands

and a train was 220 pounds yeah or 250 pounds for a train there

and a train back and it was it was literally cheaper to fly yeah

which you were saying it's kind of crazy because

when you fly think of the fuel the resources trains most

of the trains here yeah most of the trains are electric

and it's so expensive yeah crazy it's because there's competition in airlines

but not train lines that's true even though the trains are really expensive you have to get them

if you want to to travel like for us it's easy it is easier to get a train into london

and we did this the other weekend at the weekend it's actually not too bad

or off peak different times of day uh peak tickets

and off peak tickets peak are usually when people are traveling into work

so there's more demand and more of a rush to get onto the train

and that's when they know that they can raise the prices

because you have to get to work usually for 9am

and then off peak is during the day or at the weekend

because there are less people traveling so you can work around those times to try

and get cheaper tickets and we did that we went into london we went for lunch

went to like a collective of restaurants yeah

that was really cool that's nice really cool there's such variety of foods

that you can get in london that's definitely a benefit of going to London

and living in London traveling to London visiting London it's just any food

that you fancy you could probably find it within like just

a one street limit I love how diverse London is

and actually did you know

that 25 % of the residents in London were not actually born in England they were born abroad

that is cool yeah it is cool

and it does show in the types of food

that you can get types of cultures

that you see all around London yeah I love it yeah

I love it i think in general england is really good for diversity and like take where we live canterbury

we partner with a language school

and regardless of the language school at the university here

and at the university where i grew up in leicester there's

a big asian community lots of chinese students japanese students korean students

and i think that's awesome yeah there's just like people like you guys

that want to improve their english yeah i think it's great

that we give the opportunity for students to come

and see what life's like in england

and practice their english yeah i think it's a really good thing i agree

and i think it's great that other countries as well are accepting english teachers

and more people want to learn english yeah there's a bit

more demand for english teachers across the world now isn't there yeah

and it gives people a chance to to travel

and see other countries and other cultures which i love

and the philippines has just partnered with america i think to

start taking american students on a cultural exchange in the philippines

which is so cool that is really cool i would do

that too why would i not want to go to paradise the philippines are

so well known for how friendly everybody is there

and we'll be going back next december not this year next year

and for christmas and i'm super excited

and we're going to take your parents as well

and it'll be their first time going

expect to find in London what is London like known for what is it good for Oxford Street's pretty popular isn't it?

it's somewhere i tend to avoid

when i go into london though yeah it's the center of london yeah

but it is really really good if you're traveling and visiting london

if you are a tourist it's got lots of good shops it's been a

while since i've been to oxford street but i know

that the plan is to pedestrianize it yeah i did see

that that got approved yeah which is going to be amazing

so if you come to london definitely check out oxford street yeah

because the pavement can get really really busy i think it'll be really good for the area yeah

and it's got lots of a variety of shops including high street shops

which is a term in england high street shopping for it's

like smaller shops all in like one road isn't it

but they're usually the same shops

that are in the center of every city like the high street the main high street

which is the main road of a city

and you'll find the exact same shops yeah you'll probably find a mcdonald's yeah a mcdonald's a greg's

if you come to england you have to try a greg

sausage roll we're famous for those yeah they do a vegan

one as well yeah Gregg's is a bakery chain it's cheap it's cheerful

and it's delicious yeah um there's a shop called Primark

which is our discount store it's a clothes shop

and home goods shop we call it Primarni you'll find shops

like Next JD Sports all of these are really popular Marks

and Spencers yeah

and they do good food as well oh yeah M &S Percy Pigs is a popular suite

that you can get from M &S you'll also see a

lot of charity shops on like more local high streets oh

and it's good to talk about charity shops actually so charity shops

that is people like will give them their second -hand things

books clothes shoes homeware home goods you can find lots of different things at charity shops

but there's a massive culture in england of people

that go charity shop shopping hunting hunting

and you can find some really high -end goods

and you're willing to spend the time looking through charity shops you can you can find some real gems

and people then sell them on for yeah way way more money than they bought them for

but i have never been very good at charity shop shopping

my sister is excellent at it she finds like luxury designer brands

that only like fashionable people would have heard of

and she'll find them in the charity shop

and be like i got this for two pound

and i'm like wow that is amazing so if you're in london

and you see one go in maybe you'll find a gem i like getting books from charity shops um

so there's an author that's just come out with a murder mystery series

and i got the last book in one of the series for like 50p

which is really good i'm i'm just gonna bust out all

that all of the swans in england are owned by the

king they are a royal bird it's illegal to cause harm to a swan

and you could actually go to jail for it it is an interesting fact yeah it is

and before the king the queen owned them all

big ben the name big ben isn't just the tower it's

not the clock it's actually the bell inside the clock tower is called big ben
