1
Hey, welcome to today's English lesson today.
2
I am going to teach you how to think and speak in English about any relationship.
3
Remember as an English learner,
4
your goal is to speak English fluently,
5
but this lesson will help you understand that fluency first starts in your mind.
6
I'm going to help you organize your thoughts and then actually say what you want to say.
7
Are you ready?
8
Well then I'm teacher Tiffany, let's jump right in.
9
So the first relationship we're going to learn about and think about is the relationship between friends.
10
Now I'm going to tell you a little bit about my friends by organizing my thoughts,
11
using the five W's for who I've said,
12
my friends from college for what acted together in a drama group.
13
When my sophomore, junior and senior year,
14
where at churches, high schools,
15
colleges, and other local events.
16
Now why we all had a passion for spreading God's word in a way that was fun,
17
engaging and impactful.
18
Now you see what just happened.
19
I want to tell you about the relationship I have with my friends,
20
but I first organized my thoughts using the five W's and you need to do the same thing.
21
So the thought process is done.
22
Now let's speak about the relationship I have with my friends.
23
So we're going to take that information
24
that we had from right here with the five W's and now we're going to go to speaking.
25
Here we go.
26
My college friends and I used to act together in a drama group.
27
We were in the drama group during our sophomore, junior, and senior years.
28
Our drama group was pretty popular.
29
So we would do plays at churches,
30
high schools, colleges, and other local events.
31
We all enjoyed acting in the drama group
32
because we had a passion for spreading God's word in a way that was fun,
33
engaging, and impactful.
34
Now that is a great English response.
35
That is a fluent English answer and I want you to be able to do the same.
36
Again, thinking first about the relationship using the five W's and then speaking.
37
Now within my answer, there were two new vocabulary words that I really want to explain to you very quickly.
38
The first one is engaging.
39
So repeat after me.
40
Engaging.
41
Excellent.
42
Last time, engaging.
43
Very good.
44
Now this word just means tending to draw favorable attention or interest.
45
Think about your favorite TV show or your favorite movie.
46
When you push play, you get really into it.
47
Someone may talk to you, say, yeah, yeah.
48
Okay.
49
That's fine.
50
I'm watching this movie because it's engaging.
51
Hopefully this English lesson is engaging.
52
All right.
53
This means holding your attention and our drama group had very, very engaging plays.
54
They were very interesting.
55
So again, engaging, excellent.
56
All right.
57
Now the next word is impactful after me, impactful, excellent.
58
Last time impactful.
59
Good job.
60
Now this word just means having a major impact or effect.
61
It means affecting you in a way that is powerful.
62
So think about the words,
63
your mother or your father say to you or said to you when you were younger,
64
those words really had an impact on you.
65
They affected you, right?
66
We say impactful and the plays that I did with my friends when I was in college were very impactful.
67
Makes sense, right?
68
Think about it.
69
I just organized my thoughts using the five W's
70
and now you have a good understanding of the relationship I had with my friends when I was in college.
71
Makes sense?
72
All right, now let's move on to the next relationship.
73
I mentioned parents.
74
I mentioned how your parents speak to you and the impact of their words.
75
So using the 5 W's thinking about the relationship.
76
First we have who?
77
My friend and his 6 year old son.
78
What?
79
He spends time reading to him.
80
When?
81
Every evening after work.
82
Where?
83
In their family room.
84
Why?
85
He wants to develop a strong bond with his son and teach him the importance of reading every single day.
86
Now again, we're still on step one.
87
We're just thinking and organizing our thoughts,
88
but you can already start to see
89
that we have enough information to properly speak about the relationship this guy has with his six year old son.
90
So using the information again,
91
the five W's from right here,
92
let's see how we can speak about this relationship.
93
Here we go.
94
My friend and his six year old son have a great relationship.
95
Even though my friend has a ton of responsibility at work,
96
he always makes a point to spend time reading to his son.
97
He usually reads to him every evening after he gets off from work.
98
My favorite reading spot is the living room.
99
My friend told me that he wants to develop a strong bond with his son
100
and teach him the importance of reading every single day.
101
What happened?
102
Because we did step one,
103
think, organizing our thoughts with the five W's,
104
we were able to provide a good and fluent English answer describing the relationship this guy has with his son,
105
a parent child relationship.
106
Now you will see that there are a few words and expressions that I want to explain to you.
107
So very quickly, a ton of after me,
108
a ton of good again,
109
last time a ton of excellent.
110
Now a ton of just means a lot of something,
111
a large amount of something.
112
So for example, I have some cords with me in my office and these cords help me connect some of my devices,
113
whether it be my cell phone or my computer or another electronic device to my computer or to a power source.
114
So I have a ton of cords in my office.
115
Again, a lot of cords.
116
Makes sense, right?
117
Okay, good.
118
Now let's go over the next one.
119
Make a point to.
120
In the answer, I said he always makes a point to spend time reading to his son.
121
Well, makes a point to just means to give one's attention to doing something to make sure that it happens.
122
For example, once a week on Sundays,
123
I have a video English lesson for you.
124
So I make a point to record,
125
organize my ideas and my thoughts and produce a lesson that will help you speak English fluently.
126
I make a point to record a video every week.
127
Makes sense, right?
128
All right, good.
129
Now the last one I want to explain is right here.
130
Spot.
131
In the answer, the response I said,
132
their favorite reading spot is the living room.
133
Spot just means a particular place or point.
134
So my favorite food spot,
135
my favorite reading spot, again,
136
just a place or point.
137
Real simple, right?
138
So again, spot.
139
Excellent.
140
Very good.
141
Now we've went over the relationship between friends
142
and the relationship between a parent and a child using the five W's for step one,
143
to think using the five W's and then we were able to do step two,
144
speak fluently about the relationship.
145
But what about the relationship you have with your coworkers?
146
Think about it.
147
You see them every day.
148
How can you talk about this relationship?
149
Well first we have to start with the five W's.
150
Who?
151
My coworkers and I.
152
What?
153
Discussed the new semester schedule.
154
Now I'll pause real quick.
155
I'm speaking about my coworkers when I used to work at a language Institute.
156
So we had different semesters,
157
different periods of time where we would teach the students,
158
different subjects, still English, but different sub topics under English.
159
So again, for me, what discussed the new semester schedule when every two months
160
where in the staff room at our Institute and why we had to decide who was going to teach,
161
which levels and what classes worked best with our personal responsibilities.
162
So again, step one, we've thought about it using the five W's who,
163
what, when, where, why we thought about the relationship I had with my coworkers.
164
You can do the exact same thing.
165
Five W's now using the information from the five W's again,
166
who, what, when, where, and why I can now do step two and speak about the relationship I had with my coworkers.
167
Here we go.
168
Here we go.
169
Every two months, my coworkers and I would come together to discuss the new semester schedule.
170
Our meetings were usually held in the staff room at our institute.
171
It was important for us to get together every two months
172
because we had to decide who was going to teach which levels and what classes worked best with our personal responsibilities.
173
I literally just provided you with the information that came from step one,
174
where I thought about the relationship using the five W's.
175
You see how simple it is to think and then speak in English?
176
I'm telling you, this formula will change your life and help you sound more like a native English speaker.
177
Now there is one expression that I want to explain to you.
178
It's worked best.
179
Let's see real quick.
180
Worked best.
181
All right, now work best.
182
This just means it's the better option between two options.
183
So there are two options you have,
184
but this one, this seems to work the best.
185
So like I said, what classes worked best with our personal responsibilities?
186
Did one teacher work better with children while another teacher worked better with adults?
187
We discussed those things.
188
So again, in English, we say work best.
189
Excellent.
190
Very good.
191
So again, the only thing you have to remember when you want to speak fluently
192
in English about a relationship is to first think using the five W's to organize your thoughts and then step two, speak.
193
That's right.
194
Use the information you organize and then speak about that relationship.
195
I really hope you enjoy today's lesson.
196
Don't forget to keep studying.
197
And I want to remind you also to get the app.
198
If you have not got the English with Tiffany app,
199
I need you to download it now because we're constantly updating it.
200

201

202

203

204

205

206
I hope you enjoyed today's lesson and I will see you next time.
207
Talk to you later.
208
You still there?
209
You know what time it is.
210
It's story time.
211
Hey, I said it's story time.
212
All right.
213
Today's story, you know, in the lesson I was teaching you how to speak about relationships, Right?
214
So I want to tell you about one of my closest friends.
215
I mean, she is going to be in my wedding,
216
her and her husband.
217
Now, the first time I met her,
218
we were in South Korea and we were both missionary English teachers and we had started living together.
219
This was before she got married.
220
Her husband was there too,
221
but they were engaged at the time.
222
So he lived in a separate apartment and she stayed in the apartment that I was assigned to,
223
so she had her room and I had my room.
224
Now we didn't know each other.
225
Well, as you all know,
226
though, first I enjoy cooking.
227
Second, I am an early bird.
228
Maybe you don't know that I am an early bird.
229
I will wake up at 4.
230
AM with no problem at all.
231
4. AM wide-eyed, ready to get started with the day.
232
However, at eight o'clock at night, no, I'm tired.
233
I am tired.
234
My whole family is actually like that.
235
We're early birds.
236
So anyways, when we first moved in together.
237
We didn't know our styles.
238
We didn't know.
239
I didn't know if she was an early bird.
240
So anyways, when we first moved in together,
241
we didn't know our styles.
242
We didn't know, I didn't know if she was an early bird or if she was a night owl.
243
So we had to kind of get used to each other again.
244
She's one of my closest friends right now.
245
So we had first moved in with each other and at this time I was working and studying at the same time.
246
So I would normally get up very early in the morning to study
247
and spend the whole day on Sunday at a Starbucks.
248
But again, we were living together.
249
So we had our separate duties.
250
One week I'd clean the kitchen.
251
The next week she'd do the kitchen and we kind of alternated kitchen and the bathroom.
252
So this just happened to be my week to clean the kitchen.
253
But remember, I told you I was working and studying,
254
so I had to be gone all day.
255
But again, we had just met.
256
It had only been maybe a week or two that we've been living together.
257
So I did not want to leave the apartment without cleaning the kitchen.
258
I didn't want her to think that I wasn't doing my part.
259
So I went into the kitchen.
260
I think it was about six or 7.
261
AM.
262
It was early, but I was trying to wash the dishes quietly.
263
And then in the midst of washing,
264
I heard her in her room.
265
So I assumed, oh, she's an early bird like me because I thought she was awake and moving around in her room.
266
So I started cleaning the kitchen normally.
267
I mean, pots were hitting each other again.
268
I thought she was awake.
269
I thought she was also an early bird.
270
So I'm watching the dishes happy that I'm doing my part before I had to leave to go study.
271
So I'm watching the dishes and the door opens.
272
So I'm thinking, she's like,
273
yes, Tiffany is an early bird too.
274
Let's have a conversation.
275
So I'm wiping one of the dishes and I turn around to look to her and say, good morning.
276
And when I turned around,
277
it was like, uh, a breeze,
278
a cool breeze that was not welcomed hit me.
279
Like a cold wind.
280
It was like ice.
281
And I looked at her and she just glared at me.
282
Now I, again, I'm happy all the time.
283
So I said, Hey, good morning.
284
She didn't say anything.
285
She just looked at me nostrils flaring.
286
I said, this is not what I expected.
287
Again, I'm holding the dish, looking at her.
288
The situation is really awkward.
289
She is wrapped up in a blanket.
290
I said, okay, maybe she's cold.
291
It was the summertime though.
292
She just glared at me.
293
Remember I said, good morning.
294
And she did not respond and she proceeded to shut her door.
295
She was still in the kitchen with me though.
296
She shut her bedroom door and she walked towards our front door.
297
The entire time she's staring at me glaring.
298
I said, maybe this is not what I expected.
299
And she opened the front door and slammed it.
300
I said, okay.
301
Not sure what just happened there.
302
Fast forward several months.
303
Now we are super close again.
304
We got, we never talked about what happened.
305
Several months later, we had gotten close.
306
There was another coworker and we were having,
307
I think a movie night and my roommate had stepped out for a second
308
and this coworker and I were talking and she was like,
309
girl, I'm glad y'all are close friends.
310
I said, yeah, you know, really cool.
311
She said, I'm not sure what happened in the beginning though.
312
I said, what do you mean?
313
And she said, our friend is not an early bird.
314
And that our friend, the one that was my roommate actually told her,
315
I don't know if I can be able to live with Tiffany.
316
She wakes up too early.
317
It's too loud.
318
And I can't believe she woke me up.
319
I had no idea that she had complained to the other coworker.
320
Now, again, this is months later.
321
So all of us are super close and we laughed about it,
322
but I never will forget that situation because I honestly,
323
honestly thought that she was in her room awake and moving around.
324
And so, yes, the other coworkers said,
325
no, Tiff, she was pretty mad.
326
So again, when she came back in the room,
327
I looked at her and I said, uh-huh.
328
So you were mad at me.
329
You didn't tell me.
330
And she burst out laughing because again,
331
we're super close now, but in the very beginning,
332
she didn't tell me how she really felt about that day.
333
So it's kind of an ongoing joke we have now.
334
They all know I'm an early bird and at night they stay up and I go to sleep.
335
So we're all very close again,
336
but I will never forget that situation.
337
So maybe you have a friend like that,
338
that maybe at the beginning of your friendship,
339
it was a little bit rocky.
340
It was, you weren't sure if you were going to make it.
341
Let us know in the comment section.
342
All right, guys, I really hope you enjoyed today's lesson.
343
Don't forget to think and then speak English fluently.
344
I'll catch you next time.
345
Have an awesome week.
