Birdies treasure hunt.
2
Hello and welcome to Story Nori.
3
You're listening to Jhanna and I'm back with a brand new birdie story.
4
It was a lovely hot dry summer.
5
Jake and his family packed their bags and drove to a scenic part of Britain called Wales
6
where there are castles and rolling hills and long sandy beaches.
7
Some people say there are even dragons there,
8
but Jake didn't see any.
9
They rented a barn on a farm.
10
When I say a barn,
11
it had been converted into a comfortable cottage.
12
But there was also a real barn full of hay and a stable with horses and ponies.
13
Hens pecked in their pen behind a wire fence to keep out the fox.
14
ducks paddled on the pond while two geese ruled a little island in the middle.
15
It was the sort of farm that seemed to have everything a storybook farm should.
16
The farmer took Jake and his little sister Elle for a ride on his tractor to see his prized pigs,
17
who lived on a small pointy hill.
18
They were Berkshire pigs, black with white feet and faces.
19
See that magnificent fellow over there?
20
We call him the Emperor because he's in charge of all the others.
21
Last May he won first prize as the finest pig in all of Wales.
22
He's clever, no doubt about it,
23
and he knows he's special.
24
He's as proud of himself as we are of him.
25
Explain the farmer.
26
Jake saw that the Emperor really was a proud pig.
27
He listened to the farmer's praise,
28
as if he understood every word.
29
Are you going to make him into sausages? asked El.
30
No, never, said the farmer.
31
He's so smart he could be a straight A student if he went to school.
32
Oh, you're joking, smiled El.
33
But Jake believed the farmer.
34
After all, Jake knew a black crow,
35
who was one of the wisest creatures you could ever meet.
36
So why shouldn't a pig be clever too?
37
After watching the pigs root around with their snouts for a while,
38
the farmer turned the engine back on and they started chugging back down the track to the farmhouse.
39
On the way, they passed a man swooping the ground with a long stick.
40
What's he doing? asked El.
41
Oh, he's a treasure hunter looking for gold.
42
That pole he's using is a metal detector.
43
If he finds any metal,
44
it will start beeping like crazy, said the farmer.
45
Cool! exclaimed Jake Has he found any gold yet?
46
Not yet, said the farmer But if he finds any on my land,
47
we have a deal 50-50,
48
half his, half mine
49
And will you give me the same deal if I find some treasure on your farm? asked Jake Yeah,
50
why not, said the farmer Fair's fair The next day,
51
they went pony trekking Everyone in the family loved riding a horse for the first time until mum's pony suddenly galloped off,
52
giving her the fright of her life.
53
So the next day they decided to do something more relaxing and go to the beach instead.
54
That was lovely too.
55
It was an idyllic holiday but one thing was missing.
56
Birdie.
57
Jake wished he would come to the farm so he could tell him all about the buried treasure.
58
He was sure Birdie would know where to find it.
59
And very early the next morning,
60
there was a little tap on his window pane.
61
Just loud enough to wake Jake out of his dream,
62
he opened his eyes and saw his friend on the sill.
63
Birdie!
64
He shouted.
65
How's your holiday?
66
Asked Birdie.
67
Fantastic, said Jake.
68
Well, all except for when the pony ran off with mum.
69
But she was okay, just a bit shaken.
70
And do you know what?
71
The farmer says there's buried treasure on the farm.
72
If we find it, we can keep half.
73
But there's a man looking for it with a metal detector.
74
Can you help me find the treasure first,
75
so I can be rich and never have to go to school again?
76
Well, said Birdie, I might be able to assist you in this matter.
77
Many years ago, about 2,000 years or so,
78
I came here to visit my friend, a Welsh Druid.
79
He had all sorts of swords,
80
goblets, chains and the like.
81
But the Romans were coming, led by General Agricola.
82
So I said to him,
83
Them Godden, that was his name,
84
Them Godden, I think you'd better bury your gold in case the Romans steal it.
85
And so he did, and his treasure might still be here for all I know.
86
I bet it is, said Jake,
87
but it's a big farm.
88
It could be anywhere.
89
Do you have a map?
90
Nah, said Birdie, but I do have my brain.
91
As I remember, he used to perform all his druid ceremonies on top of a pointy hill,
92
and he buried his treasure thereabouts.
93
Oh, I know, said Jake.
94
That's where the pigs live.
95
Nobody would ever think of looking for treasure in a pigsty.
96
At breakfast, when Mum asked,
97
What shall we do today then, kids?
98
Jake enthused.
99
Let's look for buried treasure.
100
But Elle pulled a face and said,
101
That's boring, and Jake always gets his way.
102
I want to go to the beach, Mummy.
103
After some arguing, they agreed to go to the beach first and look for treasure afterwards in the evening.
104
After a lazy day at the beach,
105
Jake was still bouncing with energy and in a hurry to go treasure hunting.
106
Come on!
107
He said to a relaxed and nicely tired Dad.
108
If you want us to be rich,
109
we've got to find the buried treasure before the man with the metal detector.
110
Dad insisted on a cup of tea first
111
and then he pulled on his boots and followed Jake up the path to the hill where the pigs lived.
112
High overhead, a black crow led the way.
113
When they reached the top of the hill,
114
they saw the porkers on the other side,
115
rooting around for grubs before the sun went down.
116
But that wasn't all they saw.
117
The man with a metal detector was also there, sweeping the ground.
118
Oh no! said Jake.
119
I told you we should have come this morning.
120
He must have heard us saying that the treasure is buried on this hill.
121
Jake, why don't we leave it to the professionals? said Dad.
122
The treasure could be anywhere.
123
Without a metal detector, we've got no chance of finding it.
124
But we don't need a metal detector because we've got Birdie, protested Jake.
125
They stood and watched as the metal detector man dug in the ground with a trowel
126
and dusted something off with a brush.
127
Jake ran down to him.
128
What did you find?
129
Or just an old shilling coin?
130
Jake ran back and told Dad.
131
What's a shilling, Dad?
132
Is it valuable?
133
No, it's just old money from Grandad's time.
134
About five pence if that.
135
Come on, let's head back for supper.
136
Hang on, said Jake.
137
There's Birdie.
138
He's chatting to the pig.
139
He pointed towards the proud pig who rejoiced in the name of the Emperor.
140
Birdie was standing on his head and squawking loudly.
141
Quw!
142
Quw!
143
I bet he's asking the emperor to help us find the treasure, said Jake.
144
And it seemed he was right,
145
because the pig started to trot up the hill,
146
with Birdie still perched on his head.
147
Jake and Dad followed and were soon halfway down the other side.
148
The magnificent pig was now rooting in the ground and digging with his trotter,
149
while Birdie hopped around flapping his wings.
150
Look, Dad! exclaimed Jake.
151
He's found something!
152
There was a glint of silver in the evening light
153
and before long the round rim of what looked like a goblet came into sight.
154
Jake began to jump up and down singing.
155
We found it!
156
We found it!
157
We found the treasure!
158
But he soon wished he had kept his mouth shut,
159
because the metal detector man came to see what the noise was about.
160
Did I just dream that that pig has found something silver in the ground?
161
No, it's real life true, said Jake.
162
The Emperor Pig and my friend Birdie are both super intelligent
163
and know where the Druids buried their treasure to hide it from the Romans
164
All we had to do was to ask the pig politely to help us
165
and now he's digging it up for us The metal detector man went down on his knees alongside the pig
166
and started to dig with his trowel It was starting to get dark when he finally pulled up a goblet
167
It glowed a little red in the sinking sunlight,
168
but the man said it was silver and probably very old.
169
He turned it around and they saw an emblem of a crow engraved on it.
170
That's my friend Birdie, said Jake proudly.
171
And as they walked back,
172
he chatted all about his crow friend and how many clever things he knew.
173
They visited the farmhouse to show their discovery to the farmer,
174
who was as amazed as they were.
175
Well, I never, he said.
176
So my granddaddy was right when he told me their druids left gold on this land.
177
Well done for detecting it with that buzzing contraption of yours.
178
I'll call the museum in the morning and I'll keep my word.
179
We'll go 50-50 if it's worth a few quid.
180
Well, actually, said Jake, we found it.
181
The metal detector man argued that actually the Emperor Pig had found it.
182
Jake nodded in agreement.
183
Yeah, the Emperor dug it up with his snout,
184
but my best friend Birdie the Crow told him where to look,
185
because I asked him to help.
186
You know, he was friends with one of the Druids in Roman times, said Jake proudly.
187
The farmer wiped his brow.
188
Well, that is quite a tale, he said.
189
Look here, I don't mean to put the kid down,
190
said the detector man.
191
He's got a real imagination,
192
but I have been walking up and down this land for three weeks.
193
Now I've earned the reward.
194
Well, no point in arguing here this evening, said the farmer.
195
Let's see if it's worth anything.
196
Let's ask what the museum says, shall we?
197
They went back to their cosy barn for supper.
198
Jake found it hard to sleep that night,
199
as he was so full of excitement.
200
Things got even more exciting the next day,
201
when they went back up the hill with the farmer and found that the Emperor had dug up a silver tray.
202
To their amazement, it was engraved with the emblem of a wild boar.
203
The boar looked just like the Emperor, only with fierce tusks.
204
The metal detector man was sweeping all over the hill and found a bronze sword studded with some sort of stone.
205
Over the next few days,
206
more and more gold, silver and bronze turned up,
207
many pieces carrying the sign of the wild boar.
208
The Emperor was finding treasure three times as fast as the metal detector.
209
At the end of the week,
210
Jake and his family returned home.
211
Jake had to wait about six weeks for any news of the treasure.
212
He had almost given up waiting when a parcel arrived by special delivery.
213
A well-packed box containing a goblet with the sign of a crow on it.
214
Apparently, the museum had bought all the treasure with the sign of the wild boar.
215
It was a very special collection dating back to the times of the Welsh,
216
who lived before the Roman times.
217
But the bird goblet did not seem to fit in,
218
and they had given it back to the farmer.
219
I'd like you to have it, he wrote.
220
Fair's fair.
221
Even if the Emperor did dig it up,
222
you were the first to spot what he found.
223
Mum put the goblet on the mantelpiece.
224
Oh, it must be worth something.
225
Shall we sell it at the auction house? she asked.
226
Oh no, I don't want to sell it.
227
It's Birdie's Goblet.
228
It's really special and it's probably magic.
229
And so they kept the silver goblet
230
that the emperor pig had found with the help of a very wise and extremely old black crow.
231
It was, said Dad, quite an exceptional holiday souvenir.
232
And that was Birdie's Treasure Hunt.
