What's up everyone?
2
My name's Carter and welcome to the Slow and Clear podcast by What's Up English.
3
Firstly, I want to ask you,
4
have you ever watched a video about learning how to learn English?
5
A video, for example, teaching you a method about how to learn a thousand vocabulary words
6
or how to become fluent in six months.
7
One of those videos.
8
Chances are you probably have seen one of those videos.
9
So now let me ask you,
10
have those videos helped you to learn English?
11
For most of you, the answer is probably not really.
12
You've probably seen the videos and they had a method that is actually interesting and useful,
13
but you probably didn't use that method.
14
Or you maybe used it once or twice, but then you stopped.
15
and after some time you were still in the same spot with your English.
16
And this is kind of like a trap.
17
It's like a bad cycle of learning a technique on how to learn English,
18
not really using the technique,
19
and then watching another video how to learn English and just repeating that again and again and getting nowhere.
20
So in this video, in this podcast,
21
I'm going to tell you how to break out of that rabbit hole of learning how to learn English.
22
And instead, I'll show you how to actually learn English.
23
And spoiler alert, those methods to learn English can be useful,
24
but you don't actually need them to learn English.
25
So the thing with those videos is when you see that video,
26
the title, the thumbnail, it seems very exciting and you feel like,
27
oh, yes, how to learn vocabulary without forgetting it.
28
This is what I need, right?
29
So you click the video and you feel excited.
30
And the technique in the video is probably actually really useful and it works.
31
So you watch the video,
32
you tell yourself that, okay,
33
this is going to help me.
34
I'm going to start doing this method.
35
Maybe you write some notes and then you feel like you are productive and you're motivated to learn English.
36
But then life happens.
37
You get busy.
38
Maybe you used the method the first day or for a few days.
39
But then things happen, you skip a few days,
40
and eventually you stop using the method that you learned and you go back to where you were before.
41
And at that point, the cycle kind of repeats.
42
So you lose motivation, you stop learning English,
43
and then maybe a few weeks later,
44
you see another video, How to Da Da Da.
45
And then it happens again, right?
46
You're like, oh, the other methods, those didn't work.
47
But this one, this one is going to work.
48
And I totally understand this feeling because it's not just for English.
49
It's for literally any skill or anything you are trying to improve.
50
And the thing with these videos is
51
that it can actually build some frustration inside you because it makes you feel like you've tried everything, right?
52
Oh, I've tried this method.
53
I've done this.
54
But for some reason, English still won't stick in my head.
55
And these videos, they give you that boost of motivation and they can be addictive because when you watch a video,
56
how to learn English, it makes you feel like you learned some English and you made some progress.
57
But the reality is, the hard truth is that it probably didn't help you at all,
58
especially if that video was in your native language.
59
So if you watched a video in Vietnamese about how to learn English
60
and then you don't really use the method then you literally didn't really learn any English at all
61
but sometimes it will feel like you did.
62
By the way if you can understand a lot of this podcast
63
but you're still having trouble with speaking then make sure to check out my complete American English pronunciation course.
64
In that course I won't only teach you all 44 sounds in the IPA
65
but I will also help you use them in real situations.
66
Many people have learned the sounds in the IPA
67
but they still can't speak those sounds when they try to speak English
68
and that's because they've learned the sound but they haven't practiced it enough
69
and that's why in this course I've included hundreds of practice words and example sentences that are super useful in daily life.
70
So we give you the knowledge and the practice to actually improve your pronunciation.
71
If this course is interesting to you then just scan this QR code right here
72
or click the link in the description below.
73
Check it out.
74
I think you will love it.
75
Okay let's get back to the podcast.
76
So the problem with doing this is
77
that you spend a lot of time learning how to learn instead of actually learning
78
And when those methods don't work for you,
79
it makes you feel like you can't do it.
80
Like, oh, if none of these methods work,
81
then maybe my brain just doesn't work.
82
Maybe my brain cannot learn English.
83
If this person became fluent in six months and I've been trying to learn for like years,
84
then there must be something wrong with me.
85
Right.
86
But that is not true.
87
And that's one of the biggest problems with these videos.
88
And so one of the funny things is,
89
and I'm going to talk about this a little more later in the podcast,
90
is
91
that you listening to this video right now in English is
92
likely improving your English more than watching those videos on how to learn English and not actually applying the methods.
93
This video right now, I've been talking for maybe five or 10 minutes.
94
And so that is a lot of words and a lot of sentences that have gone into your brain, right?
95
So when you hear words that you understand,
96
the connection in your brain is becoming stronger.
97
When you hear sentences, you understand.
98
Your brain is automatically recognizing the patterns of the sentences and you're learning grammar naturally.
99
You're improving your listening skills.
100
You're improving your vocabulary.
101
You're improving all of these various skills just by listening to me speak English right now.
102
By the way, I'm starting to sweat.
103
You might be able to see that because my air conditioner right now,
104
it's really loud when I turn it on.
105
So I can't have it on while I'm recording.
106
So gradually my room is just getting hotter and hotter,
107
especially with these lights.
108
So yeah, you might see that I'm sweating.
109
It's not super comfortable, let me tell you.
110
So anyway, going back to why these videos on how to learn English are
111
so popular is because it's in our human nature to look for the easiest way possible to do something.
112
Kind of like a magic solution to accomplish something.
113
And when we are unable to accomplish something like learn English,
114
we feel like there must be some knowledge,
115
some method that we're missing.
116
And videos about those methods get a lot of views
117
because it's easier for people to learn a method in 5
118
or 10 minutes than to actually spend the hundreds of hours of listening
119
and reading and speaking that it actually takes to learn English.
120
And soon I'm going to tell you what to do instead.
121
But I just want to clarify that I'm not saying that those English learning methods don't work.
122
Because many methods you can learn on YouTube are actually very useful.
123
And some are even scientifically proven like flashcards and things like that.
124
They do work.
125
But there are just so many of them.
126
And most people, let's be honest,
127
are not going to follow those methods.
128
So you have so many different methods.
129
You learn this one, you learn that one.
130
And you're not sure which one to stick to.
131
So you bounce around and you never make the real progress that you want.
132
And I see a lot of people who email me,
133
who contact me directly saying that they've tried this and that, but nothing works.
134
And
135
so I know there are a ton of people stuck in this cycle of learning how to learn instead of actually learning.
136
So again, very soon I will tell you what I recommend to actually learn.
137
But before I do that,
138
I just want to give you some real experience to help motivate you.
139
And that is that pretty much every person,
140
every English learner that I have met who speaks English fluently,
141
like really well, I always ask them, how did they learn?
142
And 99%, maybe even 100% of them told me that they learned the basics in school,
143
but they couldn't speak, right?
144
So they learned the grammar and very basic things in school.
145
But then after they finished school,
146
they couldn't speak, but they were interested in watching YouTube and Netflix and stuff like that.
147
So they learned their English basically all from input,
148
from watching YouTube videos, from Netflix.
149
I have never met a person who used some particular method like flashcards,
150
which is useful, but I have never met anyone who speaks fluently that used that method.
151
What I'm trying to say is that while those methods are useful,
152
you do not need to have some secret method or some special method to learn English.
153
But instead, what you need is a lot of exposure to English.
154
You need to listen a lot,
155
read a lot, and speak as often as what is possible for you,
156
what is realistic for you.
157
So even listening to this podcast right now is really good for your English.
158
If you're listening and understanding,
159
it's improving your vocabulary, your grammar, and even your pronunciation.
160
You can improve your pronunciation even more if you shadow along.
161
So basically, yeah, just listening to content like this,
162
podcasts, TV shows, reading, consuming that content in English will improve your skills.
163
You don't need to specifically study grammar rules to learn grammar.
164
You can just learn like a baby through what is now becoming more popular called comprehensible input,
165
meaning that you listen to English or you read English that you understand
166
and your brain will figure out the grammar and the patterns and the vocabulary by itself.
167
That's like how a baby learns English.
168
So guys, to sum up what I'm saying,
169
those videos about how to learn English,
170
some method to learn a thousand vocabulary words,
171
whatever, they can be very useful if you apply them.
172
However, the problem is, is that most people don't apply them.
173
Maybe they apply them for a short time and then they stop
174
and then they continue the cycle of learning how to learn instead of just consuming English through videos or books, whatever.
175
And so the main point I'm trying to get across to you
176
is if you have watched a lot of those videos and you're still struggling with English,
177
set 20 minutes per day to simply engage with English content.
178
You can spend 20 minutes listening to English,
179
like my podcast or anything else in English,
180
as long as it's English.
181
Or you could spend that 20 minutes reading,
182
but what's important is that you do it consistently.
183
So if you can find something that you actually think is interesting,
184
then you're more likely to do it consistently.
185
Whereas if you have a method that you don't really enjoy doing,
186
you're likely not going to do it for a long time.
187
You're not going to do it consistently.
188
So, spend 20 minutes each day and just listen or read, engage with English.
189
If you can, communicate with people in English as much as you can.
190
I can pretty much guarantee that if you stay consistent with listening and reading and speaking when you can,
191
you will make much better progress than if you are just stuck in a cycle of learning how to learn,
192
trying the method, failing, losing motivation,
193
and then restarting the cycle again and again.
194
There is no secret magical method that works.
195
The thing that really works is getting input.
196
And those methods can be a bonus for you, like a supplement.
197
So yeah, I hope this video was useful for you.
198
Consume English content, read, listen every day,
199
and your English will get better.
200
Just stick to it and don't give up.
201
All right, I'll see you in the next video.
202
Goodbye.
