Podcast Slow and Clear 过 What's Up English In this video,
4
I'm going to show you guys a way to learn English from my videos
5
whether they are my vlogs or my podcasts you can use this method to learn English
6
really effectively and actually remember what you learn.
7
Now, if you are someone who watches my videos each week and you learn English like that,
8
then that is totally fine.
9
That's, you can learn English in that way.
10
But this method is going to be for people who
11
maybe have less time and they want to learn with a bit more structure and they want to learn more efficiently,
12
then you can use this method to learn and remember what you learn from my videos.
13
So as always, this video has a free PDF that you can download right here with the QR code
14
or click the link in the description.
15
And in that PDF, you will get the full vocabulary list of some of the difficult
16
or related words to this video and also the full transcript.
17
And by the way, at the end of this video,
18
I will show you a way that you can use that PDF to learn English.
19
All right, so let's get started with the method.
20
So this method is a three-step method.
21
And one way you can look at it is like step one,
22
you plant a seed.
23
And then step two, you water the seed.
24
So let me explain what I mean.
25
Okay, so for step one,
26
I recommend you watch the video for the first time with the subtitles.
27
And the goal of this step is to watch the video and try to understand as much as you can,
28
even with the subtitles.
29
So if there are some new grammar structures or new vocabulary words that you see,
30
your job in this step is to learn those things.
31
And when I say learn, it doesn't mean remember.
32
Not yet.
33
Just try to learn what they mean and plant that seed in your brain.
34
Now, if you are a beginner,
35
then maybe you can just watch five minutes of the video,
36
a few minutes, and then,
37
whoa, that's a lot of information.
38
Then you have to take a break.
39
That's totally okay.
40
Or if you are more advanced,
41
you could watch the entire video and try to learn as much as you can from that video.
42
Whether it is a podcast or a vlog,
43
you can do the same thing for both of those videos.
44
All right, so that is step one.
45
Watch the video with the subtitles and try to learn as much as you can.
46
Any new words or sentence structures, whatever.
47
By the way, if you can understand this podcast,
48
but you still struggle to speak,
49
then make sure to check out my complete American English pronunciation course.
50
In this course, you'll learn all 44 sounds in the IPA,
51
along with the more difficult sounds like linking words,
52
the ending S, and much more.
53
Plus, you'll be able to actually master speaking these sounds with our special chorusing tool,
54
where you can practice hundreds of common words and sentences for every sound.
55
Over a thousand students have already transformed their pronunciation.
56
Just scan this QR code or click the link in the description to see if it's right for you.
57
Okay, let's get back to the podcast.
58
So that's planting the seed.
59
Now, after you plant the seed,
60
what do you have to do?
61
You have to water the seed, right?
62
If you just plant it and don't water it,
63
then the seed is just going to die.
64
So for step two, let's water that seed.
65
How do we do that?
66
To water the seed, you can wait a few days,
67
maybe one, two or three days,
68
and then watch that video again.
69
So watch the video or the part of the video that you watched in step one.
70
For step two, you simply watch that video again,
71
but this time you don't look at the subtitles.
72
The goal of this step is to try to understand as much as you can without looking at the subtitles.
73
So you're trying to remember what you learned from step one.
74
So for example, if in step one you watched it for the first time and there were a few new words.
75
In step two, when you watch it without the subtitles,
76
your job is to try to remember the meaning of those words.
77
And when your brain has to work to remember the meaning,
78
this is what forms stronger connections in your brain to remember those words for longer.
79
So basically, the harder your brain has to work,
80
the better you will remember those things.
81
So if step two for you is very difficult trying to remember,
82
oh, what did that word mean?
83
What was that?
84
Because you're not looking at the subtitles,
85
then that is really good for your brain.
86
When it's thinking about the meanings, it's forming connections.
87
so that's your job for step two is watch it again without the subtitles
88
and try to remember and understand as much as you can from step one
89
so step two we can consider
90
that watering the seed you're putting water on it to help
91
it grow all right now after you've done step two you can wait a few more days again
92
and now let's go to step three.
93
So in step three you watch the video again and you test yourself to see how much you remember.
94
So now you're watching the video not looking at the subtitles
95
but when there's something you don't understand and you can't remember it and you really try but you can't,
96
then you can look at the subtitles and say,
97
ah, okay, that's what that word means.
98
And then move on.
99
Keep going.
100
So what you are doing here is you are testing yourself to see how much you remember.
101
And you're, again, challenging your brain to try to remember and make those connections.
102
And if you just cannot remember a word or a grammar structure,
103
the meaning of it, that's OK.
104
Just look at it again.
105
Oh, yeah, that means that and then move on.
106
So now that you've done the three steps,
107
step one, two and three,
108
what you can do is go back
109
and forth between step two of watching the video with no subtitles
110
and trying your best to remember and then step three watching it again
111
and testing to see how much you remember and checking the words when you tried but you really cannot do it.
112
So with this method, every time you do that,
113
you're going to remember more and more.
114
And every time you remember a word or a grammar structure,
115
that connection becomes stronger in your brain.
116
So when you hear it again in another video,
117
you'll know what it means.
118
And what happens is that Then for a new video,
119
for example, when you go to step one,
120
step one will be easier.
121
You will understand a lot more.
122
There will be fewer words that you don't understand or fewer things that you don't understand.
123
And then, so you repeat this process of watching the video with the subtitles,
124
understanding it, re-watching it without it to challenge yourself to understand.
125
And then step three of testing yourself.
126
When you repeat this process again and again,
127
your listening will improve so much.
128
But of course, you have to stay consistent.
129
And this method is not something I invented.
130
This is a very well-known method that people use to learn new things.
131
For example, doctors, when they're in medical school and they have to learn a thousand things about the body,
132
they use flashcards and active recall,
133
which just means trying to remember yourself,
134
to build their long-term memory.
135
So the idea is that you learn something,
136
you plant that seed, and then you challenge your brain to pull that meaning,
137
to remember that meaning.
138
And every time you do that, that memory becomes stronger.
139
Okay, so now let's say you've been watching this podcast for a while and the podcast is pretty easy for you.
140
You watch it and you understand maybe 90,
141
95 percent, maybe even 100 percent of the podcast.
142
Now for you guys, you could increase the speed of the podcast to 1.25
143
or 1.5 and also I would recommend that you also start watching other podcasts
144
or other videos by native English speakers
145
so those videos for sure are going to feel a lot more difficult than my videos maybe they
146
speak really fast and don't speak as clearly but that's okay
147
because when it's challenging for you then that means you are learning
148
that doesn't mean you have to stop watching my videos right
149
because if you watch my video and you understand all of it then that's just helping to reinforce your knowledge
150
you're understanding it and you're just making those connections a little bit stronger.
151
So your listening skills just become more automatic.
152
Now to go back to watching new content and challenging yourself,
153
the reason why that is so important is because you can think of it like exercising.
154
For example, if you go to the gym and you bench press 20 kilos,
155
right, in the beginning, and then after two weeks,
156
20 kilos becomes too easy,
157
then what are you going to do?
158
You're probably going to add more weight to the bar, right?
159
So then the 20 kilos becomes too easy,
160
so you increase it to 25 kilos.
161
So now this is a bit harder.
162
And then maybe before with 20 kilos you were able to do 10 reps.
163
But now with 25 kilos it's harder so you can only do maybe 5 reps.
164
Think of learning English in the same way.
165
So maybe for my videos you could watch a whole video and understand it.
166
That's the 10 reps.
167
but then
168
when you increase the weight to a more difficult video then
169
maybe after just a few minutes your brain gets tired
170
and you get bored and you want to stop watching
171
because it's too difficult that is totally okay that's like doing you know three reps
172
or four reps instead of 10 but then the more you do those harder reps,
173
slowly you will be able to do more and more and it will become easier.
174
So it's always important to continue challenging yourself in order to improve.
175
Now, another thing that you guys can do if you are advanced enough is you can practice shadowing along to my video.
176
And this is where the PDF can become useful is you can download that PDF and shadow along to the transcript.
177
You could also do the subtitles at the bottom,
178
but some people have said that they want to see the whole sentence in order to shadow.
179
So if you need that,
180
then just download the PDF and you can shadow with that.
181
All right, guys.
182
So to recap everything, the whole method,
183
step one, watch the video for the first time.
184
It can be the whole video or it can just be a few minutes of the video.
185
You can look at the subtitles and try to understand as much as you can.
186
Step two, a few days later,
187
watch that same video again,
188
but this time don't look at the subtitles and challenge yourself to understand as much as you can.
189
Remember this challenge, the work that your brain has to do will build the stronger connections and help you get better.
190
And then step three, watch it one more time.
191
But this time you can look at the words that you don't understand and you can test yourself.
192
And, you know, if there are many words you still don't understand, don't get frustrated.
193
It's okay.
194
Just stay consistent with it and it will come.
195
There are some words you can learn 20 times and you still forget the meaning.
196
So it happens to me.
197
It happens to everybody.
198
It's totally normal.
199
And so if the podcast is getting too easy,
200
then again, you can increase the speed,
201
practice shadowing along and start watching other native English speaking podcasts.
202
all right guys
203
so uh that's what i got for you today i hope
204
it was super useful i'm going to be doing more vlogs
205
and podcasts and just kind of mixing it up um
206
but yeah it's been a while
207
so i hope you enjoyed the video i hope it was useful
208
if you have any questions leave a comment below
209
and yeah i'll see you in the next video by the way if you want to practice your pronunciation and IPA,
210
just check out this video right here.
211

212
