1
Excuse me, are you a doctor?
2
Yeah.
3
What kind of doctor are you?
4
A psychiatry resident.
5
I'm a physician with over a million followers on social media, and I teach people how to improve their health.
6
Can I ask you a couple questions?
7
It'll be two minutes of your time.
8
How long did it take you to get to this point in your career?
9
Oh, God.
10
A long, long time.
11
Okay, tell me about that.
12
I was an undergrad, and then I did medical school in London, so that's eight years.
13
And now I'm my second year of training at U of T for psychiatry.
14
What are some things that everyone should know about their own mental health?
15
I think there are little things
16
that you can do for yourself looking at how you feel in your body and in your mind, gaining better awareness about that, and confiding in my friends,
17
and I think like opening up to others also allows others to open.
18
For someone that doesn't have the ability to actually recognize what kind of emotions that they're having, or understand why they're suffering from different mood issues or things that are going on in their life,
19
are there any practical tips that you could provide to them to help them to gain that insight, to gain that emotional intelligence?
20
We have this misunderstanding that these are ingrained things, These are things that you don't have the ability to build, but they're really something that you can get better at day to day.
21
Sometimes it takes practice.
22
As a psychiatrist, you're really hearing about so many different people's trauma and really crazy life circumstances.
23
That can be really heavy.
24
How do you feel like that has impacted you in your view of life and the world?
25
It's given me a little bit more empathy where people come from.
26
Someone's like really annoying in traffic.
27
I think everyone knows that like people are all in like their own battles.
28
And I think it's given me a lot of gratitude.
29
I feel like my knee-jerk reaction is if I meet someone that's rude, I'm like, Oh, what a dick, you know?
30
And I'm trying to train myself to like actually reframe it as like, I don't know what else is going on in this person's life.
31
There's a lot of context that I'm missing here, you know?
32
I think like there's this misunderstanding that like mental health is like really, really, really hard to treat and like nothing we throw at it ever gets better.
33
That's not true.
34
There's a lot that we can do.
35
There is always going to be complexity, but I've also seen like a lot of really, really positive changes in people's lives.
36
I run a webinar series where I bring physicians and surgeons in to teach the general public on various aspects of health.
37
Can I ask you to come in and share your expertise at some point?
38
Sure.
39
Awesome.
40
Thank you so much for your time.
