1
And now with more from our new CBS News poll,
2
President Trump's approval rating has now dropped to the lowest level of his second term at 37 percent.
3
And views of the economy have dropped to their lowest level in several years.
4
Only 29 percent now say the economy is good.
5
Joining us now with more is our Executive Director of Elections and Surveys, Anthony Salvato.
6
Anthony, good to have you here.
7
Gas is $4.51 and change per gallon.
8
Is this pressure all due to gas prices?
9
Gas prices aren't helping.
10
It's not the only thing.
11
I always start with feelings because they're so closely connected to people's finances.
12
They tell us they feel stressed.
13
They feel concerned about their personal finances.
14
And feelings of economic security are down from a year ago.
15
Now, gas prices are increasingly,
16
they tell us, weighing, being a financial hardship on them.
17
Overall, though, they continue to tell us they don't think their income is keeping pace with inflation.
18
And that's something we've been seeing now for years coming out of the pandemic.
19
So contextually, yes, it's part of something larger.
20
The other part of this,
21
though, is uncertainty, which is a top way that people describe the overall economy.
22
And the way that relates to gas prices is,
23
take for example, just the situation in Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
24
People tell us day to day,
25
they don't feel like they have a clear understanding,
26
they're getting a clear understanding of what's going on there.
27
And of course, that is impacting gas prices.
28
That's part of what I mean by uncertainty.
29
But the other part of the big picture here,
30
you pull back, you look at the job market,
31
people aren't confident that if they had to find another job, they could.
32
They even think you hear so much about AI in the news.
33
Structural changes.
34
Big structural changes.
35
They think AI is going to start taking jobs.
36
And what it leads to when you look at opportunity, even generational opportunity.
37
There's a lower number who think that their opportunities are going to be better than their parents were.
38
How big a risk is the inflation problem,
39
or at least the price of living, right?
40
Is it going to hurt Republicans?
41
So the administration, of course, urges patience, right?
42
Once the war is resolved, et cetera.
43
Well, so I tested, what do you think the president's policies are doing in the economy in the short term
44
and the long term?
45
In the short term, you get big numbers who say they're making the economy worse.
46
So that's what's right in front of folks.
47
But there also isn't that much more optimism about what happens for the long term.
48
Part of all this uncertainty is that neither of the parties,
49
not the Democrats, not the Republicans,
50
are net positive on being seen as having policies that help cost of living.
51
So you look at the public and yeah,
52
okay, Democrats have a little bit of an edge there,
53
but it's still net negative.
54
And so people are going in the midterms,
55
maybe not feeling like there's help out there.
56
Anthony Salvato, always good to talk to you.
57
Thanks.
58
We'll be right back.
