With a month to go before the fall referendum on October 19th,

Elections Alberta is less than halfway to its goal of hiring at least 60,000 electoral officers.

So far it has received 48,000 applications, but it's only hired 25,000 workers and still needs 35,000 more.

Not overly.

There are different programs that have been initiated through Elections Alberta.

One of them being the team group program.

That program allows sports teams and community and volunteer organizations to have their members work.

But any compensation would go towards the group collectively as fundraising.

Noble says it's one way they hope to get more people interested.

But several electoral divisions, particularly in small rural areas like the Tabor-Warner zone, are having trouble getting people to apply.

We've hired over 200 people so far, but we are still looking to want to at least double or triple that amount of people.

Some of the other tough to fill areas include Peace River, Fort McMurray and Bonneville Cold Lake, St. Paul.

You have a lot of remote areas where you've got people living

but they don't have communities that are right close to them.

I don't think it's that people are not interested in it.

They're just not sure I think that they don't really know what's involved.

One former chief electoral officer and election commissioner says the 60,000 person goal is very ambitious.

It's not a good look for them to have stated

that they need 50,000 workers and have only found 25 a month out from the referendum date.

Gibson says most Alberta elections have between 20 and 30,000 election officers

and because the province needs to double that he's concerned about the hiring in rural areas.

Most of the people that have worked in the elections in the past have been in an older age demographic.

And when you run elections four years later, some of those folks would have aged out.

As for elections, Alberta and Noble is confident they will get more workers and says if they don't hit that 60,000 mark, the referendum will still run,

but the counting might take a little longer.
