1
This right here is the most minimal looking but functional desk setup I've ever had.
2
My name is Edward Lee and I'm a content creator based in Seattle
3
and if you follow this channel you know
4
that I've had quite a few desk setups over the years and even set ones up for others.
5
But it's been kind of a long time since I've worked on a desk setup and it's because I got busy, they started to all look the same, and it just wasn't as fun for me anymore.
6
But I recently came across the Grovemade desk.
7
First things first, let's tour my current desk setup itself.
8
For computer screens, I'm using two Apple Studio displays.
9
One is a VESA mounted version with a monitor arm to use in a vertical orientation, and the other is a height until adjustable model.
10
Now the studio display is a nice monitor but to be totally honest I mainly bought it for the aesthetics.
11
For audio though we have the same Audio Engine A2 Plus speakers
12
that I've been using for pretty much over five years now and they've held up super nicely and still sound great.
13
I'm no audiophile but these are perfectly fine for me.
14
So for the MacBook docking and hub we have the CalDigit TS4.
15
This allows me to get more out of my MacBook
16
so I can dock it and have more ports like I need like Thunderbolt ports, USB ports, SD card slot, headphone jack, and Ethernet.
17
Now to the right of that I have my MagSafe coaster.
18
Now this is a product that I designed myself
19
and I actually have units to sell but it doubles as a mag charger and also a coaster.
20
It's kind of a neat little thing that I made.
21
I feel like it's a V1 of what could be but honestly it's pretty functional.
22
I've been using it a lot.
23
For keyboard and mouse we have an Apple keyboard Apple trackpad on the left
24
and a Logitech MX Master 4 on the right.
25
Now all of these peripherals are sitting on top of the matte Grovemade studio pad in black and walnut.
26
Now this desk mat I must say is easily one of the nicest products Grovemade has ever made
27
and not only looks amazing but it also has a lot of functionality.
28
It allows you to have quick access to things you can kind of prop up like an iPad
29
or your phone or some notes.
30
It also has a good track system here for pens or small storage for things while you're working.
31
Now, where this desk really shines and what you probably clicked on this video for is what's underneath.
32
Now, for starters, we have this massive desk drawer that has a ton of storage and function.
33
And for my setup, this is where I dock my MacBook with a hidden cable that is fed through the back.
34
I also use this drawer to store my ipad and my headphones
35
and even though i don't pull it out all the way i have access to things
36
that i need on a regular basis like my ssds remote controllers sd cards
37
and pens the best part all of these accessories are plugged into the integrated power strip
38
so there's only one cable that leaves the desk into the wall to power everything
39
but a little more on cable management later you see Grovemade has been in the desk accessory space for many years now.
40
Why did it take them so long to make a desk?
41
And the simple answer, what they really wanted to make didn't exist on the market yet.
42
So they had to start from scratch.
43
I had the chance to talk with the designers at Grovemade in person about the design challenges they overcame
44
and how intentional they had to be to create this desk.
45
And in my opinion, for any premium product to be considered worth it, it needs to be solving problems.
46
Not only does it need to be solving problems to make things more convenient or enjoyable, it needs to do it in a way that's stylish,
47
in a way that's designed well.
48
What went on behind the scenes at Grovemade to bring this desk to life?
49
How did they merge function and design into one.
50
Now challenge number one was storage.
51
So a lot of these sit -stand desks don't have enough storage
52
and we noticed our customers struggling with that so we had ideas how to increase it.
53
There's a couple issues right if you do a big drawer it'll hit your legs
54
because they're yeah like if there's a drawer right here
55
or something and then imagine the visual right so
56
if there's a typical drawer here it's just way too heavy yeah from the visual balance standpoint
57
because you have these skinny legs and a heavy top
58
so we we had this concept of hey we can solve these storage issues
59
and make it beautiful
60
if it was super thin in the front like a wedge
61
instead of having a drawer that's just on the side
62
and tall when you spread
63
that drawer out across the whole width of the desk you're
64
able to have even more space at a thinner profile yeah
65
and most of the stuff people are storing in there is not very thick anyways
66
and a lot of things
67
that grove did the past was they tried to like force our users into not overfilling their storage
68
which is a problem that you know even i suffer from it's like
69
if i have a drawer near my desk like i'll put objects in there like old boxes old pens
70
if i'm in a hurry i'll just toss stuff in there
71
So we wanted this drawer to be very like purposeful so that it would help people organize in a very thoughtful way.
72
And Ken talked with me about the inspiration he had that led to this drawer setup.
73
I got these new cabinets at home in my kitchen and my buddy put in these very, very wide drawers and everything is there.
74
You got silverware and all that stuff.
75
Instead of like pulling something out, putting it back, pushing the drawer floor, pulling another drawer out or rummaging through stuff, you can just pull it out and all your tools right there yeah
76
and we thought that kind of feeling would translate
77
because kitchen you're you're cooking right you're accessing tools same thing
78
at work yeah challenge number two was cable management now there
79
are hundreds of videos online of people wire managing their desk with all kinds of miscellaneous tools
80
that you find online i even made a video a few years back
81
that blew up because there weren't any good solutions at the time
82
but all the existing wire management solutions
83
that these companies have been thinking of they they always feel
84
like a bit of an afterthought like a like a last minute shopping cart add -on or
85
or a slap on product yeah i'm pretty sure everyone who watches like they know this all too well cables
86
that are hanging down cable managers i've done it on
87
so many desks now yeah it's usually a nightmare
88
because you either have to like crawl under
89
and then you have to like stick something underneath the desk
90
then you're like your next killing you yeah like get the stuff upside down
91
or it's on the back side which then then you have to pull the desk off the wall.
92
Yeah, or like squeeze behind the wall to get to it.
93
Then you get to the back, whatever cable manager system.
94
Yeah, this was a really fun exploration that actually involved some prototypes that are pretty sweet that are still kicking around.
95
But initially we started with like a fixed solution, like most core management solutions are, where it's like a trough or a gutter that's on the bottom of the desk, and then you're cladding it with something.
96
Well, one breakthrough was Sean, our lead designer, I saw him working on some kind of cable management on his own desk.
97
He was prototyping something.
98
And I had noticed that he had actually rolled under his desk without getting out of his chair.
99
So he had raised his desk so high he could just roll under.
100
And I actually was able to slide under it in my office chair
101
and work on stuff as opposed to like laying on the floor
102
or like having to pull the desk out and go behind it.
103
So that's when we started really latching onto this idea of like, okay, the front needs to be able to open hey we can get to it from the front and what
104
if we build an access panel right that's crazy now it is a bit of an odd feature
105
that the desk can go this high but it makes so much sense because
106
we've always crawled underneath the desk to do the wire management but
107
if you need to cable manage all your wires are here
108
there is a power strip right here with usbc ports i
109
think there are one two three four five six six outlets search protected
110
which is nice cable management is probably one of the biggest things
111
when it comes to a clean desk setup
112
and growth made you know ken and sean they thought about
113
that the fact that you can fit underneath here
114
while sitting on a chair
115
and you don't have to be on your knees like messing
116
up your back in a really uncomfortable position to tuck your wires.
117
Game changer.
118
Now challenge number three was trying to not make it look like a machine.
119
All sit -stand desks on the market have this very similar look and feel.
120
They have two legs, sometimes four.
121
They have visible remote on the left or right side.
122
Now Ken didn't want to make it look like a machine.
123
He specifically told me
124
that he wanted to make it look like a piece of
125
furniture before grove made i was an independent furniture designer maker oh okay
126
and that's uh still kind of a hobby of mine i
127
just love furniture specifically with these kind of sit -stand desks the aesthetic can be really challenging
128
because you got the motor
129
you have this certain look where it kind of looks like a machine
130
so that was one of our design objectives is to kind of transcend
131
that feeling where it's a mechanical device we want it to be furniture
132
so we we had this concept of hey we can solve these storage issues
133
and make it beautiful if it was super thin in the front like a wedge
134
so from the side this is like a perfect triangle right
135
and we obsessed with getting the front of this to be this five eighths of an inch right
136
so when you look at the desk it basically can accomplish a lot functionally
137
but it's not bulky looking yeah right most of these sit
138
stand desks they have these uh handset these controllers these handsets
139
that are mounted yeah they're usually like a little controller right here
140
that you can visibly see yeah and it's got like presets
141
or buttons or whatever but in my opinion
142
that reinforces this image of the sit stand desk is like a machine
143
and that is not what we wanted we wanted to be a piece of furniture
144
so what we did is we hit it it's kind of a controversial move
145
But I really wanted to see this super slick, continuous line without breaking it up.
146
like once you see this it's kind of hard to it's kind of kind of hard to imagine
147
but just in case i i did get a little nervous
148
that not everyone's as fanatical as me so there are holes
149
so you can mount it yep here
150
but me personally i i hide it the premium woods hidden drawer track hidden remote
151
and magnetic cable cover all help this piece look more like a piece of furniture
152
that can live next to other premium home pieces i think grovemaid has managed to merge high quality design,
153
function, and material all into one with the desk, which for a small business based out of Portland, Oregon, that's not an easy task.
154
So who is this desk even for?
155
Actually, who is this desk not for?
156
After some testing, I can tell you right now
157
that this desk isn't for the person that's just trying to simply stand up and sit down while working.
158
It's not for the person that doesn't care about a minimal desk setup that's functional
159
and it's definitely not for the person who doesn't care about premium build quality
160
but if you do care about those things
161
and you are in a position to purchase this desk this might be the perfect desk for you
162
and I know for me personally this is not for everybody
163
but for me the desk that I work at
164
and sit at is very important to me
165
and I would pay good money to have a nice chair
166
or a nice desk or nice monitors because I spend so much time at my desk.
167
It's quite literally a good portion of how I make my money.
168
And so I don't want to be spending 12 hours a day
169
if I need to at a desk that's uncomfortable
170
or a chair that's uncomfortable or just
171
if I can make my money back by having a more premium experience while I'm working, I'm definitely always going to take that route.
172
Links to the desk itself from Grovemade and all the accessories in this video are in the description.
173
Peace.
